I am new to android development and am currently working my way through the "Hello..." Tutorials on the developer website.
I got stuck on the Tab Layout walkthrough and the only way I could resolve it was to put each Activity Class in a separate .java file.
I was wondering if all Activities need to be in separate .java files, or am I missing something.
Is there any class generators to process web services in Android/Java? I may have to write my own to generate classes against WSDL but I'm trying not to. Also is there one for REST services as well?
If not providing me with discovery service suggestions like disco/wsdl are good enough.
What I did was create two .java files. One that can compile and run on a 1.5 phone (SDK3) and then one that works on 2.0(SDK5) So for this example i'll call the 1.5 file ExampleOld and the new one Example. I was wondering if i just made activity like this if it would work sort of like a "portal" and pick the activity to load depending on the SDK so there is no crash or compile errors. Are there any changes I should make to my code? Maybe anyone out there that's had to do this before.

Since i'm still new on Android programming, I have some problems on some issues. I have a QuadTree data structure implementation in 3 seperated Java files and i would like to use this data structure in my application. But i don't know how to use this .java files in an Android project. I tried to put them in a new Android project, just for testing, but I get lots of errors. Could anyone help me about using this java classes in my Application?

I have a .jar in my Android project which has many references and uses of the java.awt.* classes and other classes not available on Android. How can I provide my own implementations of these classes so that I can embed the unmodified .jar file (the only modification is being ran through dx) in my Android application and it will use my own class implementations?

View 3 Replies View Relatedi'm trying to include a maven java project into my android project. the maven project is the greader-unofficial project which allows developers access to google reader accounts, and handles all of the http transactions and URI/URL building, making grabbing feeds and items from google reader transparent to the developer. the project is available here:
the code is originally written for the standard jdk and uses classes from java.net that are not a part of the standard Android SDK. i actually tried to manually resolve all dependencies and ran into a problem when i got as far as including com.sun.syndication pieces required by the class be.lechtitseb.google.reader.api.util.AtomUtil.java... some of the classes in java.net that are in the standard jdk (i'm using 1.6) are not in the Android SDK. in addition, resolving all of these dependencies manually is just ridiculous when i'm compiling a maven project that should be pretty simple.
however, i can use maven to compile the sources with no issue. how can i include this maven project, which is dependent on the complete jdk, into my android project in such a way that it will compile so that i can access the GoogleReader class from my android project? and for the record, i don't have the expertise to rewrite this entire api to work with the standard Android SDK.
I updated the android framework ( java code), and I was able to compile the new java classes and test it. My issue is that i want to make some of the new java classes part of the android.jar, and i am unable to figure out the best way to add it to be build file.
For example: I want to include another class just like com.android,internal.util.Predicate.class is included in the android.jar. How and where do one indicate that the Predicate.class needs to be included in the android.jar?
Is there a way to unzip and see what files exists in classes.dex file. Are there winzip like utilities for .dex viewers.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there anything the Dalvik VM supports (in terms of bytecode) which is not used currently because the .class files don't have it?
As an example, if people would write their own Source-to-DX converter for their functional language XYZ, would they be able to implement e. g. full tail calls although the .class file does support tail calls only under certain circumstances?
I do an import of the full package name / java file, and if I do a <classname>.<method>, SOMETIMES I can get it to access - other times I get a lot of can't use a static in a non static bunch of talk. I'll admit I'm new to Java, so what do I need to do? Call a class instance first, then call my methods? I'm rather confused by this, as I want to put all of my 'functions' into a FunctionsList.java file, and all of my main Activity (UI) into a MyActivity.java file.
For example:
<MyActivity.java>
import com.example.FunctionsList;
private class MyActivity extends Activity {
FunctionsList.function();
}
9/10 times I get that static/non-static error. If I put all of my functions into MyActivity.java, I have zero problems!
Is there any way to access the value (any constants) from Android.mk file to my java file.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have written a command line interface program in the C language. This kind of programs (as you know) waits for user commands typed in the terminal and reacts on depend of them. In fact, the program implements a callback function which parses the command and invokes the appropriate function in order to respond to the user.Now, I have to make a Java GUI (Graphical user interface) for the desktop (Ubuntu) version of this program and then port the same program to the Android Platform (of course the GUI will respect Android framework), so I'm looking for the best way to do it.I have heard about JNI and JNA and I don't known which one will be the best for me. By the way what are the main differences between JNI and JNA.

How do I make the Java assert statement work? By "work" I mean that a failed assertion should either stop program execution or at least log the failure. Currently, neither happens. I understand there is a run- time option to enable this (-ea), but I don't know where to specify it. Changing "PreferencesJavaInstalled JREsEdit JREDefault VM Arguments" has no effect, probably because those settings are not used for the Android execution.

When i started learning android i learned that R.java files goes to /gen folder recently i saw it on /src file (in WROX-Professional Android App Dev- sample code downloads). How does this work and also in some code i saw (xml layout) android:id="@+id/R.id.someName"(i don't remember in which web page i saw this code) I don't understand this, can somebody help me with this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been having quite some problems with R.java file. Now I have decided to do a backup and delete the file to see what happens. Nothing happened, so I created an empty R.java file and hopped for the best. Now Eclipse seems to figure out that the file was tempered with and even issues a warning: R.java was modified manually! Reverting to generated version. And that's all there is. I tried building it manually but got no results. So, I have two questions: 1. what should I do to force Eclipse to generate the file. 2. what is happening here? How is the file created, where is the code that is generating the file? I would appreciate any help.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to write a java program that will install an apk file on android. I saw that there is an Intent action: ACTION_PACKAGE _ INSTALL, available and the developer reference says: "Broadcast Action: Trigger the download and eventual installation of a package" So I wrote a program like so:
Intent newintent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PACKAGE_INSTALL); File apkFile = new File("/data/data/HelloAndroid.apk"); newintent.setData(Uri.fromFile(apkFile)); sendBroadcast(newintent);
But this fails to do the intended task (which is download and install the application). I'm not able to figure what is happening to this broadcast intent, no logs get printed in LogCat. Any pointers on where to look or how to proceed?
I plan to do our builds via Hudson and have android apk files available for download there. Is R.java in the /gen directory something that you check-in with you VCS? Or is it something that needs to be ignored and android sdk will generate every time if it doesn't exist?
