Android :: Installing Android 1.6 - On Headless Linux Server

Nov 14, 2009

How to install Android 1.6+ on a headless Linux server. Our continuous integration build machine is a headless server in the cloud.

Following the instructions, I downloaded android-sdk_r3-linux.tgz, untarred it, added its location to my path, and tried to update. This what I got:

" root@savendipity:/usr/local/share/android-sdk-linux/tools# android update sdk

No command line parameters provided, launching UI. See 'android --help' for operations from the command line.

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no swt-pi- gtk-3550 or swt-pi-gtk in swt.library.path, java.library.path or the jar file

+ stack trace "

I don't know whether this message means that it is not possible to update the SDK without a GUI, that my command line is wrong, or that my environment is missing something that would allow me to install from the command line.

Android :: Setup Sdk From Command Line On Headless Server?

Apr 21, 2010

So far Ive managed to download and install the SDK and its in my PATH. Problem now is that I can't run "android update sdk" since it expects to be connected to a display and Im connected to a remote headless server through ssh (its a build server so there's no desktop env). Is there a command-line option for the android tool that tells it to run without X ?

Media :: Sync Music Via FTP From A Linux Server

Sep 22, 2010

Part of why I bought a HTC Desire to replace my 2G iPhone was getting away from iTunes - piece of bloat required me to keep a Windows computer around, updating music was pesky, etc.

The plan with the HTC is to sync it over Wifi when it connects to my home network. The system it syncs with is a media server running Linux and storing my music collection.

I've gotten so far to have Tasker start FTPServer on connecting to Wifi, and have built a little script called every 10 minutes by cron that checks for presence of the phone. If it finds the phone, it connects and syncs a folder, then makes the ftp server on the phone shutdown, so it won't reconnect every 10 minutes.

So far, so good (I'll gladly share the bash script, if anybody wants to use. Needs some more polishing, though)

The bit that bugs me is playlists. I can create m3u playlists and copy them over fine, however once they are on the phone, they disappear from the Music folder and cannot be changed/deleted anymore - except by the built in music app. This is quite inconvenient, since I have a number of podcasts that get updated daily and that I'd like to take on the phone, with a playlist showing the newest episodes first. I can make the playlist easily on the computer, however the phone will end up with multiple copies of these playlists, which I can't get rid off.

If there's no way, I'll work around by editing track/album MP3 tags and grouping my stuff together this way, but I'd prefer using simple playlists...

General :: Installing ADB And Fastboot Tools On Linux Mint 15

Aug 15, 2013

I recently switched over from Win 7 to Mint 15 and cannot get ADB and fastboot to work for the life of me! On Windows, I just downloaded and installed the Android SDK and had no trouble using ADB and fastboot to mod my phone. It is proving to be much more difficult on Linux.

I've searched Google, Linux Mint forums, and these forums; tried following numerous guides, and still my comp can't recognize my phone. Every time I type in "adb devices" I get "List of connected devices" followed by a blank line. No question marks and certainly no connected devices. "lsusb" shows my HTC One S as connected so I know it's not my USB port.

When I plug in my phone, I get an error message, "Unable to mount Android Phone Unable to open MTP device '[usb:002,005]'" and then a file explorer window opens displaying my phone contents anyways. Not sure if this could have anything to do with it but I thought I'd mention it.

General :: Set Up VPN Connection Between Linux Mint 10 PC (server) And Nexus 7 (client)

Dec 1, 2012

I'm trying to set up a VPN connection between a Linux Mint 10 PC (server) and a Nexus 7 (client).

All I'm getting so far is a "Connecting" status from the Nexus 7, followed after a few seconds by a "Disconnected" one.

As it is my first attempt at setting up a VPN (both on the server and client sides) I was wondering if there was a log file generated by Android on the Nexus that would give me a clue as to where I'm going wrong.

A similar file on the server side

Android :: How To Send Key Events To Headless Emulator In Instrumentation Test?

Jul 9, 2010

We are currently working on an instrumentation test suite which runs on our build server, but while the tests pass on a dev machine using a normal Android emulator, the builds fail on the build server since there we only run a headless emulator with the -no-window flag. The failure occurs when trying to invoke the InstrumentationTestCase.sendKeys() method to programatically open the options menu.We also tried to let the instrumentation test app and the app under test share the same Linux user ID using android:sharedUserId and run in the same process (android:process -- we weren't sure if that was already the case), but still no luck. Does this mean it's currently impossible to run instrumentations which contain key events on a headless emulator, or are we missing something?

HTC Incredible :: Rooting Tip For Linux And Linux Live Booting

Jun 19, 2010

i successfully got into adb in recovery mode fairly easily on my ubuntu 10.4 laptop using the following method- this should also work for a linux live boot from a usb flash drive

in one terminal tail and follow log messages
~$ tail -f /var/log/messages

In another terminal run the loop

Then

1. plugin usb and keep it plugged in
2. remove battery, eject sd card.
3. put battery in
4. press vol- and power
5. after around 6 seconds, your terminal with the log will show something like "new high speed USB..."
6. press vol- to select recovery
7. press the power button
8. IMPORTANT- as soon as you see a new log entry (something like "USB disconnect"), pop in the sd card

check your loop terminal for adb. if it doesn't work, repeat at step 2

Android :: SDK Run File On Linux 64 Bits?

Dec 21, 2009

I wonder if someday the SDK will run fine on Linux 64 bits. I understand it's not a priority for Google team, but 64bits desktop OS are becoming common. My case : Mandriva 2010 64 bits, Eclipse 64 bits, SDK 1.6 : OK to create code & launch emulator. But : - adb never find my phone linked to USB cable (it was OK before on Mandriva 32 bits) - TTS also doesn't work well on the emulator (it was OK in Mandriva 32 bits). Do you think the problem is with Mandriva ? or in Android SDK ?

General :: Android Apps On Linux?

Sep 1, 2012

Android and Linux kernels started re-merging at version 3.3. People said that a short way down the road, android apps would be able to run natively in linux. the kernel is now version 3.6 and I've heard nothing more about running android apps in linux. people on these and other forums put a lot of great work into getting linux running on android devices. now with windows 8 coming out, the market will be full of both ARM and x86 based touch devices of all sizes and shapes. I for one would love to be able to boot up ubuntu on one of these devices, and use either traditional linux apps or android touch apps as my mood and situation dictate. so- any new word on when we will be able to run android apps in linux?

If one downloads the Linux SDK (1.6) the extension of it is .zip but in fact it uses the .tgz format. So if anyone cannot unpack just rename the file to .tgz and it will work. I am surprised that no one from Goolge tested that and that no one complained so far.

HTC Hero :: Rooting Any Android Phone From A Linux OS?

Feb 22, 2010

I'm a Linux user, so the idea of rooting the phone is one of the many reasons I picked up this phone. However, I've been reading the forums and searching around, and have yet to find anything about rooting *from* Linux. Ubuntu and Fedora find the Hero beautifully; I've had better response mounting this than some portable hds I own. But has anyone successfully tried rooting any Android phone from a Linux OS? I'd really rather not install Windows just to do this. I imagine Wine might help, but there's got to be a better way to access Linux-to-Linux than using Windows.
