Android :: How To Display A List
Sep 23, 2010
I have a String countries[].now when i click a button then on the onClick event this abc array is filled.suppose it is filled with the name of 10 countries.These 10 countries should be visible as a list so that i can choose any 1 country among the list. but i am not able to show them as a list.
My programme crashes if i use the following code :
CODE:...
As countries is filled later on the click of a button.So initially the countries array is empty and as the onCreate() is executed first it crashes.
I found the examples on net where there is pre-defined array.so it works.My array is filled in a onClick event.how can i display List at that moment?

When I have a ListActivity and an Adapter how does Android handle a list with 200 elements.
Does it try to load all of them directly how does it wait till the user scrolls and then renders those elements?
Do I have to worry with performance when a list is too long?

I would be retrieving values from SQLite database and have to display it in a list view. So how should I pass the images out from the database into the list view (in fact, I only save the image uri in db). I am able to save and retrieve images individually and display it on the screen. But how do I pass a bitmap and display it in a list view.

I never do graphics type programming. I'm designing a screen that will need to look good on all phones, and all resolutions. It's for displaying in a list view, and there will be a small graphic for the summary view, and a larger graphic for the detail view. Normally I use a 32x32 (res 72x72ppi).png for the summary view which looks good on my G1. The second image is for the detail view and it basically should fill the entire width of the screen (roughly, it's ok if it doesn't use the entire width as long as none of it is chopped off). The size I use for my G1 is 468x60.
So, the question for the guys that really know this stuff is: What sizes do I need to make these images to support all screens and densities with the fewest number of images? I know that the answer is a little subjective, but I remember seeing a post with a link to a page that recommended 3 different images for the different screens (and it seemed to make sense when I read it), and I think but don't remember for sure that then you would need 6 layouts to support those with both landscape and portrait orientations.

The same code that displays the lists running on the emulator doesn't run on the mobile (Motorola Milestone). I'm using the same android platform (2.1-update).
Inbox Code...
TextView subject_textview = (TextView)rowLayout.findViewById(R.id.subject_textview);
subject_textview.setText(email.getSubject());
String body_hint = " - " + email.getBodyHint();
TextView bodyhint_textview = (TextView)rowLayout.findViewById(R.id.body_hint_textview);
bodyhint_textview.setText(body_hint);
String sender_name = get_sender_name(email.getSender());
TextView sender_name_textview = (TextView)rowLayout.findViewById(R.id.sender_textview);
sender_name_textview.setText(sender_name);
TextView date_time_textview = (TextView)rowLayout.findViewById(R.id.date_time_textview);
date_time_textview.setText(email.getTime());

I also want to make it so I can click each entry in the list and open a new activity to display some information (similar to the contact list).

I am building a android aplication which will be consuming a json file from the internet. This json file contains a list of news from a particular website. Each json object contains information such like title, summary, descripition and web links for the news thumbnail and the original image.
I will be displaying in a listview three information: the news thumbnail, the title and the summary. Here resides my problem. I dont want to load all thumbnails from the internet if they wont be displayed. What I am trying to say is that why download a thumbnail from the 30th news if the user wont scroll down the image. So, i will, initially only download the thumnails from those news that are being displayed in the screen and when the user scrolls down to see more news, as soon as the list item appers to the screen i want to download the image and then display.
Is there a way to achieve this? Is it possible to find out if the list item is on the screen? I have been searching all over the internet for a solution for this but i am running out of ideas.

I want to show the user a flattened pick list of all their contacts phone numbers and it must work from versions 1.6 up. I have read the related questions on SO and the Android documentation for Eclair (http://developer.android.com/resources/articles/contacts.html#legacy).
The problem is, even splitting my code into a factory class and specific implementations does not work for me because using Contacts.CONTENT_URI only shows contacts not individual numbers. What I need is this for version 1.6
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK, Phones.CONTENT_URI); startActivityForResult(intent, REQUEST_PICK_CONTACT);
And the equivalent for 2.0 and above.
Even if I get their example to work, by building against the 2.1 API am I not stopping my app being visible on the Market to users with earlier versions of the OS? I can't launch it against a 1.6 emulator, for example.
