May 19, 2009I don't know how to get random access to a raw ressource. It is easy to get a FileInputStream from a raw ressource, what about RandomAccessFile?

Android :: How To Access String Resource From Another Application?
Oct 8, 2010I have a application 'A' and application 'B'. Say, I have a string resource in the application 'A'.
<string name="abc">ABCDEF</string>
How do I access the value of abc from the Activity in 'B'.
I tried the following method.
try { PackageManager pm = getPackageManager();
ComponentName component = new ComponentName( "com.android.myhome", "com.android.myhome.WebPortalActivity");
ActivityInfo activityInfo = pm.getActivityInfo(component, 0);
Resources res = pm.getResourcesForApplication(activityInfo.applicationInfo);
int resId = res.getIdentifier("abc", "string", null);
} catch(NameNotFoundException e){ }
Always resId is returned 0 always. Can anyone please let me know if I could access string abc from the application 'B'.
Android :: Want To Access Random Files Moved To N1
Feb 11, 2010So I just got my Nexus One (like literally a few hours ago) and yay everything is nice (well not everything - for some reason I can't download apps from the market). Anyways, I figure, let's see how this thing is for reading pdfs.
I mounted it as a drive via usb. Created a docs directory, and place a pdf book in it.
Ok...Now how do I open that file?

Access Windows Foreign Network Resource In Script?
Apr 19, 2012I should like to manipulate (copy, delete, rename..) files and folders on PC under Windows, with a script being executed on my smartphone under Android.However, i don't know the correct syntax to use to do this.I use Script Manager with the Samba addon.
If i was on a PC under Windows, i will do, by example, that in a batch :
net use \192.168.2.x my_password /USER:my_user
copy local_filename \192.168.2.xc$foreign_folder
This DOS script copy a local file on a remote hard disk.
I should like do know how to do this on my Smartphone in a script executed by Script Manager.
Android :: How To Use Resource Within A Custom Xml Resource File?

<category value="3" resourceId="@xml/categoryData3" />

Using XmlPullParser, on the START_TAG, I can use:
int value = parser.getAttributeIntValue(null, "value", 0);
to get values 1, 2, 3...however:
int resourceId = parser.getAttributeIntValue(null, "resourceId", 0);
doesn't work...it just yields the default value 0, or whatever I change the default value (3rd parameter) to be. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong or if this is possible?
HTC Incredible :: Random Restarts - Lost Contacts - Messages - Random App Data
Jun 16, 2010I've had my Incredible since 4/28, and everything has been working smoothly up until about last Thursday night when it just restarted out of the blue while I was listening to music. Then right after it booted up, it restarted again, then again about seven more times. I got fed up and took out the SD card and it seemed to stop after that, so I haven't put the SD card back in since then.
Just now, Wednesday, about a week later, I was browsing around on the internet and all of a sudden, it restarted, and then again, and again, and again. I've read that it is because of poor signal strength or something like that so I had just enough time to put it in airplane mode before it restarted again.
Side note, that theory about it being caused by poor signal seems to make sense because the first time it happened to me I was out of town in a city that gets very bad coverage with Verizon, and now today when it started happening again was at my house where for some reason I get very bad service with the incredible, my old phone worked perfectly fine in my house but the incredible gets terrible service, and so does my brother's Droid. In fact, about two weeks ago I got my first dropped call on Verizon in about three years, and it was in my house.
So anyways, I decided to put it in airplane mode, and just after I put it in airplane mode it restarted again. Then when it booted back up my Helix Launcher 2 home screen went back to the standard Helix Launcher 2 icons, I go into my messages and everything is gone, my contacts are all gone, everything is gone. I go to the app menu and all my apps are still there, but when I start up an app, all the custom settings are default now. I went into the settings and my accounts are all still there. I click on internet and I get a terms of service agreement, it's as if I am booting it up for the first time, but for some reason my apps and accounts are all still there.
I turn airplane mode off thinking it might have something to do with it not being connected to my google account, and I restart it again and everything is still gone. I don't know what to do, has this happened to anyone before? I feel like there should be a way for me to get this stuff back since my apps are still there and my accounts are still synced, but random things are missing like my contacts and messages etc. This is really starting to get annoying, I have insurance and everything, but I really don't want to exchange it for another one because I've read that other people who have had there phones replaced have still had the same rebooting problem, even after going through multiple replacements.
HTC EVO 4G :: Random Music Not Random
Jun 15, 2010I noticed this same issue with my HTC Hero, and then it seemed to go away. Now I've noticed it again.
The issue is this: I have around 2700 songs on my SD card, all in a folder called Music, and they are arranged, quite logically, by artist and album under that. Unfortunately, when I put the music application on random, it seems to get stuck on 4 or 5 artists (and sometimes within those artists, one particular album) and play those almost exclusively, with only an occasional diversion to some other artist. At one point it was so bad that a. it played one particular song 6 times in a 4 hour period, and b. I got so tired of one of my artists, I deleted it entirely!
So, is this a bug with the built in music player? Is it because of the amount of music I have? Is it because of where my music is stored? Has anyone else had this problem? (Or does Android OS just have an affinity for The Byrds? )
Are there any other music apps I can try? I tried Simply Music, and it did work much better on the randomization, but it hung for a few seconds several times (for no discernable reason) and it is very slow to load.

My question is instead of using R.drawable.image which is an image in resdrawable folder, I want to use a image from sdcard.Is it possible? How to get the resource id of an image in the sdcard?

Oct 11, 2010I do have a lot of language specific resources. There's one point in my Android apps where I do get a resource value and need to translate this value into the matching id. The value is not neccessarily in the language specific file for the current language (en/de/...). It's somewhere in there ... and it's unique.
After reading the docs and this thread "http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3476430/get-resource-id-by-passing-name-as-a-parameter-in-android" I thought that "getIdentifier(String name, String defType, String defPackage)" is the correct way to go but I can't get it to work. The result is always "0".
This code is part of an activity and I'm on Android 2.2.
Is it possible that Android doesn't take all resource files into account and searches just in the current language specific one?
For an example

To make things clear. I don't want to mis-use string resources as a database. It's only one part that occurs on very rare situations.

I was going to get one last year, but waited b/c I heard 2010 was 'the year of the smart phone' - and I'm glad I waited.Though I'd have to see it in person to know for sure, but I'm almost positive that DroidX will be my first smartphone. I'm VERY excited, but I want to make sure that I'm educated enough to use it for all it's worth (ie: my mom has had every iphone, but just leared to text message last month).Is there some place/book/thread/site that I can study which would tell me about smartphones from the very most basic all the way to the more advanced? Jul 20, 2010If I am not wrong with the way android:sharedUserId is intended to work, then my question is how to avoid overlapping resource IDs? appt seems to aways start IDs at the same initial value (i.e. drawables at 0x7f020000), so there will be sort of conflict or ambiguation. As for now I failed to get that cleared w/o digging in OS sources. Or I miss anything, like magic "undocumented" appt option (not that aapt is documented at all)?

Sep 4, 2010My application has resource conflict problem. Did some investigation, seems like all the resources within the apk file are cached after they are loaded on demand. The cache is stored in Resources.java mDrawableCache. The key to retrieve the drawable from this cache is combining the data and assertCookie fields of TypedValue class. In my application, there are 2 resources, ex. a color background and image drawable, evaluated to the SAME key value.. So just wondering, how can it happen?BTW, I am using eclair SDK.

Nov 17, 2010I have an apk (App1) that has a raw resource (res/raw/mytextfile.txt) and I would like to read that text file from another apk (App2). I define a content provider in App1 and I override the openFile(Uri, String) method as follows:

App2 does the following to try to get access to mytextfile.txt:

However, when I read and write out the contents of the BufferedReader, I get way more than just the contents of mytextfile.txt.
I played with this some more and found that the file desriptor returned to App2 is pointing to the App1 apk file. I wrote out the contents of the BufferedReader to a file and did a binary comparison to App1.apk. The two files were identical.
