Android :: Launcher Home Screen
Sep 21, 2010I don't have the accurate terminology and maybe that's a part of my question. In the android home screen, we have the ability to slide the screen left and right and display multiple pages. Each of these pages has a different set of icons. in the mac world these would be called "spaces". What is it called in the android world. More importantly is there a standard control that can be used to achieve this effect ?

May 26, 2009Is there an easy way to imitate the Launcher look and feel? I mean having three full screen views which can be switched between by sliding/dragging right or left. I had a look at the source code to see how it was done and found that the magic is done in the "com.android.launcher" package. I take it that it is inadvisable to use the same classes as those in that package due to them not being part of the official SDK and therefore up for change at any point? If so, is there a good way to get a similar effect from the official SDK? The Sliding Drawer would have given me what I needed if it was possible to have more than one defined, but that seems to not be supported. (the handles stack on top of each other) So you know what problem I'm trying to solve, here is some background: I've got the an application which shows a photo. I want to maximize the viewing area of the photo so it takes up most of the screen. At the same time I'd like the user to easily be able to bring into view the metadata of the photo. That is where I wanted the 'slide android view into view' functionality similar to that found in the Launcher and/or the Sliding Drawer.

Aug 20, 2010Sorry if this sounds silly, but what are the benefits of using a launcher or home screen replacement (launcherpro, ADW, etc?) I mean, they look like they are copies of Sense UI, so I really do not see the benefit if you are on an HTC phone. I could definitely see if for other Android devices, but I am just confused as to what the benefit is.

Jul 22, 2010For all of us using SenseUI, hitting the home screen button will bring us... home, for lack of a better word.
However, recently, hitting the home screen button brings up a dialog asking whether I want to use SenseUI or the stock Android launcher. I'm aware this normally happens if you go into applications and clear the defaults for SenseUI.
However, I haven't done this. Moreover, even when I tell it to "save" the default for SenseUI when the dialog comes up, it seems to "forget" it after some time and asks for it again.

General :: GO Launcher EX - How To Add New Home Screen Page

I cannot figure out how to add a new home page. I'm at ten right now. If I use Settings/Edit to get the multiple page view of home screens, there is no plus sign to add a home page. I must be missing something.

My question is, what does Launcher Pro offer over the stock home screen app that comes on the X? The stock one now offers a dock at the bottom and has 7 different screens. So, I am trying to figure out the real advantage now.

Oct 14, 2010I'm running Launcher Pro and only have one home screen.Earlier my phone was locked and I hit the unlock button and there is no unlock puzzle piece. The capacitive buttons don't work, I can't pull down the menu, but the screen is there.So I reboot.It works fine for a few mins but next time when I unlock all the icons are missing from my home screen except the 5 dock buttons.Capacitive buttons are fine, menus work fine, even the app drawer.I went to task manager and killed Launcher Pro and restarted it and everything was back, but I've never had a lick of trouble with it before and suddenly it starts.The only thing I can think of is that a little while ago I went under preferences and hid several of the apps from my app drawer (many of which are on my home screen) but I wouldn't think that would adversely effect function/stability.I've been running LP for over a week and it's not given me a luck of trouble before this, and then two issues in under an hour? Any ideas?

Jul 19, 2010Would this be a ROM issue? Maybe an issue with Launcher Pro Beta? When I hit my home screen button, it takes a few seconds for my shortcuts and widgets to load. I really like LPB but am not liking how long it's taking to load. I set it as my only launcher in my ROM that I made so I can't go into another launcher and see if it's slow, does anyone think that could be the culprit?

Nov 4, 2010I am developing droid apps with eclipse (new to both) and have a basic Layout question. When using the layout tab (rather than the coding tab) in my main.xml, I am trying to create a home screen for when my app opens.
There is going to be the logo at the top center, then 3 simple buttons below, all centered. How do I go about formatting the Logo so it maintains a size relative to the person's screen size, and stays in the center?
I don't want to write sloppy code to where my program looks fine (UI wise) on my screen and is poorly formatted on other's screens. Also, is there good documentation explaining all of the Property values in the layout view?

Android :: Create Call Fails In Windows 7 - Missing JDK
Jun 16, 2010I'm having a problem getting my android dev environment setup in Windows 7. I follow the instructions here, as well as several environment sublinks. I am using Eclipse with the Android plugin. I have installed the Java JDK several times, in various locations (jdk-6u20-windows-i586.exe) - but I am obviously missing something.
Every time I run "android create avd --target 2 --name my_avd" I get an error:
C:Usersandrew>android create avd --target 2 --name my_avd
WARNING: Java not found in your path.
Checking it it's installed in C:Program FilesJava instead.
ERROR: No suitable Java found. In order to properly use the Android Developer
Tools, you need a suitable version of Java installed on your system. We
recommend that you install the JDK version of JavaSE, available here:

This error message is the reason for me installing the JDK several times over. First I tried installing to a location on my e: drive. I then moved it to the default loc (program files (x86)javajdk.6.something. I also tried forcing it to go into the program files path, but it still automatically installs into the (x86) path. I have added the install path to my path environment variable every single time, yet I still continue to get this error. My suspicion is that windows 7 and the android tools are not playing together well in terms of finding the JDK, but who knows, it may be something entirely different. If you have seen this error before.

But it won't work on from Android SDK Manager. There seems to be bug that throws the following error "SD Card size must be at least 9MB". So I have decided to try from command prompt as I read on other blog that it will allow me to create AVDs without getting SDs less than 9MB errors. When I connect to the server with the default Android browser it shows the site fine, but when I go to download a file (say a .doc file), the file is larger than normal and can't be opened in quickoffice.Yesterday I was trying to download a 28k word document that kept downloading at 158k in size. But Live Home allows icon packs ... which is big. Anyone have an opinion about this? ADW seems very stable. And I don't want to use Live Home if he is ripping off ADW (he did say it is based on ADW thought)
