Android :: Clock - Which Is In The Destop - Widget Or Application - Activity?
Apr 22, 2009
I have a question for widget support on Android. I found clock in the android destop, and want to know if it is a widget or application (Activity)? If it is a widget, what about the widget engine (runing enviroment) of android?

About the Eris. On version 2.1 does Beautiful Widgets (the app) show under "data" on your SD card? Should it? If it doesn't belong there should and I delete BW - will the clock/weather on the home screen still work? I expect the HTC / Android clock weather deal is a widget vs an app? Or is it an app and what is it called?'

I am trying to create app widget.In this widget I have added one image button.If i click on this button i should pass list of object to next activity.Before passing this list to activity I am converting it to parceable list and adding it to bunddle and puting that bundle to intent.This logic is working fine in android 1.6, but this is not working in Android 2.1.In android 2.1.I am getting Null pointer excepion when I try to access this list in next activity.To solve this problem I tried to pass only String data through bundle,in next activity String is displaying properly,but when I try to pass list,then only i am not getting list in next activity.

I can create a static widget without thinking, I can even create a widget like the analogue clock widget that will update itself, however, I can not for the life of me figure out how to create a widget that reacts to when a user clicks on it. Here is the best code sample that the developer documentation gives to what a widget activity should contain (the only other hint being the API demos, which only creates a static widget):
public class ExampleAppWidgetProvider extends AppWidgetProvider {
public void onUpdate(Context context, AppWidgetManager appWidgetManager, int[] appWidgetIds) {
final int N = appWidgetIds.length;
// Perform this loop procedure for each App Widget that belongs to this provider
for (int i=0; i<N; i++) {
int appWidgetId = appWidgetIds[i];
// Create an Intent to launch ExampleActivity
Intent intent = new Intent(context, ExampleActivity.class);
PendingIntent pendingIntent = PendingIntent.getActivity(context, 0, intent, 0);
// Get the layout for the App Widget and attach an on-click listener to the button
RemoteViews views = new RemoteViews(context.getPackageName(), R.layout.appwidget_provider_layout);
views.setOnClickPendingIntent(R.id.button, pendingIntent);................

I hav an app that is like a relational database. There is a main app activity that users manage things with. There is also a widget that will display important info and add data to the database. When the widget is clicked, a configure class displays a way for the user to edit data. When the configure activity is done, the widget is updated and instead of going back to the home screen, the apps main activity is started. I can't find where the main activity is being called from. Wouldn't I have to create an intent and start Activity() to get this behavior? When done updating, I want the home screen and not my app.

All I'm looking for is a widget that looks like the clock that comes standard on the sense UI, but without the weather info. Anything like that out there? Date and Location i'd still like to have, the large time still there, but no weather information.

I'm desperately looking for Digital Clock Widget v1.8.5 by Maize, link to AppBrain page: Digital Clock Widget - Android app on AppBrain
I can't get it off the Market (it's not there) and I can't find the .apk anywhere on the web...
Since it is a free app, I hope it's okay to post here to ask if anyone has the .apk file and would be willing to share it? It's a great widget and I deleted it by mistake!

As I'm reorganizing my main home screen (HTC Desire), I find that the original HTC 4x2 takes up too much space especially because I don't care about the weather part of it. I do like the "flip clock" design though. I have looked around for an alternative and have found the following solutions:
BeautifulWidget small home widgetThis looks nice, especially with the right skin, but it's still a 4x1 widget and the clock itself is not centered even when hiding the weather part of it. Is it possible at all to have the clock centered? Digital World Clock widgetThis one is a 2x1 widget without weather, which means I can center it at the top of the screen. Unfortunately the date display is bogus on a French locale phone, it does not respect the date format (day month year) and the name of the day of the week (Thursday) gets displayed as a number (5) I have contacted the author about that, I'll see if he replies.

I need a widget or app similar to a palm app called "Big clock".It has the following functionality:
1. Time: The time tab has a full calendar, time and date
2. World Clock: With at least 2 cities
3. Alarms: 4 configurable alarms that can be set to repeat on a day or days selected. (Great to remind me to watch certain shows).
4. Count-down timer.
I hope someone can point me to an app that has all these features or hopefully a developer can develop a similar app for Android.Click the link to view the big clock app from palm (Warning) it's a very old app and shows it's age: bigclock

Considering buying Beautiful Widgets, just for the clock (the small clock here on the right But I don't want to buy it, if you can't use the clock without the weather-part. Beautiful Widgets has been downloaded so many times, one of you must have it and be able to answer my question Alternatively, is there another clock only widget, that uses the same font?

I want the HTC Desk Clock Widget (the one with great weather animations, etc) on my Droid X. I was thinking it would be easy, but I'm guessing I'll have to "root" both devices. In lieu of that, does anyone know of a Desktop Clock app WITH weather that actually works properly on the Droid X. The one I purchased the other day (and since returned for refund) (from "Apps4Cause") was virtually non-functional.

Im looking for a digital clock widget that is just the clock. No weather or anything like that. Sounds simple enough? Well, the problem is, I find all these nice clocks but theyre all 1x2 or even 1x1. Im looking for something atleast 1x4. 2x4 is fine also. I like beautiful widgets but I dont want the weather.

I'm using LauncherPro and i wanted a clock and weather widget. so naturally i purchased Beautiful Widgets. When i put "Beautiful Smaller Home" on my home screen the weather only updates when I turn my phone off and then back on. I've gone into the settings and ensured that both Geolocation and Use GPS over Network were enabled. Any ideas why it isn't updating and/or is anyone else experiencing this same issue?

I use a third party alarm app, "Alarmed," because the default android app can't have the alarm volume ramp up with time. I would like to have a widget that launches Alarmed, but it doesn't come with a widget of its own.
Does anyone know of a 2x2 clock widget that you can set to launch any app you choose when you tap it? Or does anyone know of an alarm app/widget combo that lets you have the alarm slowly ramp up in volume over time?

I am currently trying to create a cuckoo clock widget in which I am facing problem with updating the pendulum sound each second. My pendulum has to keep on ticking each second with sound effects integrated. I am doing update every second and I am able to play the sound using
mPlay = MediaPlayer.create(context, R.raw.chime); mPlay.start();
But after about 30 seconds, the sound stops playing giving the log error as follows:
E/AudioTrack( 2106): AudioFlinger could not create track, status: -12 E/AudioSink( 2106): Unable to create audio track E/VorbisPlayer( 2106): mAudioSink open failed
Then again the same sound starts playing after a pause of about 20 seconds instead of getting played each second. It continues in this fashion of playing the sound file for some seconds, then to the pause state and then again playing from start. This problem doesn't come into picture when I'm trying to update the sound on hourly basis for my hourly chime because in that case only once every hour this sound is played, same is the case for updation every minute. This problem arises only for updating the sound each second. What is the reason behind this delay?
