Android :: Adb Command Not Found In Linux Environment
Mar 25, 2010
While implementing the BluetoothChat application .apk inside G1 device, it always pops up a message:
$adb install -r /home/parveen/workspace/BluetoothChat/bin/BluetoothChat.apk
-bash: adb: command not found
I am not getting clearly why this error is popping up every time.

i read kubuntu 11.10 finally has integrated phone capabilities and is going to be heavily geared towards mobile devices URL....and development of Android execution environment for the android os that allows you tu run .apk in linux if so i think this would be full of win for kubuntu with it being the first linux distro with integrated phone capabilities and if the AEE was available that would just be the coolest phone ever

I am using Ubuntu (newbie) and I installed JRE, JDK and Android-SDK knowing that this is what I need to start developing android apps. However, I noticed that platform-tools directory is missing. According to some articles that I read, I need to run the android tool inside the "Tools" folder to get a copy of the missing folder. But when I try to run "android" tool, it gives me this error "android: Command not found". I did not do anything aside from installing JRE, JDK and Android-SDK.

Running Android 4.0.4 on Emerson EM543 Tablet. Could not install Google Play so had to install Android Market. Market apparently somehow disables the Android system LockScreen. So, now trying to get lockscreen back on boot (downloadable apps, as far as I can see, don't lock screen at system boot, which is what I want). I got a terminal emulator and was wondering if there was a Linux command line argument I could use to start Droid lockscreen at system startup.
I thought I was getting close with this solution, [URL] ....., but it is for an HTC Amaze 4G, and I can locate the AdroidManifest.xml files in the apk files on my system (using ROM Toolbox Pro Root Browser). But, even if I could figure out how to do it there, that file would be changed in the very next update. I am looking for a something similar, just need to know the xml filename or a command line argument that could be used in a startup script.

I'm trying to set up the android SDK to develop a simple program on the command line in linux (Ubuntun 9.10). I tried eclipse, but it has know problems running on Ubuntu, so I gave up on it. Here's what I've done so far:
downloaded android-sdk_r05-linux_86.tgz from [url]
tar xvzf android-sdk_r05-linux_86.tgz
ln -s android-sdk-linux_86 android
in .tcshrc added setenv PATH .....:/home/user/android/tools
source .tcshrc
ran 'android'. This opened a gui. Under available packages: I installed everything, and quit the gui.
ran 'android list targets' and It listed these:
Available Android targets:
CODE:...........
I want to create a simple hello world program for my motorola droid. Which of these targets should I use?
How do I see the Skins?
If I run 'android' from the command line it says that that there are no virtual devices. Is a virtual device the same as a target?
How do I get a droid skin and/or a droid target and/or a droid virtual device?
I THINK that I need to run something like 'android create avd --target 2 --name my_avd', but not sure. Is there a step-by-step list of how to do this somewhere?
Later: I figured out that I had to create targets (=virtual devices) like this:
android create avd -t 1 -n myavd1
....
android create avd -t 8 -n myavd8
This gave me 8 virtual devices in the gui when I ran 'android' from the command line.
Does anyone know what api level / platform to use for the Droid? And where to get the right skin? Is there anything hardware-specific that I need to know for Droid development?
Finally, are there any lists of steps to create a hello world app from the command line (linux) and run it on the emulator and then run it on a real phone?

i successfully got into adb in recovery mode fairly easily on my ubuntu 10.4 laptop using the following method- this should also work for a linux live boot from a usb flash drive
in one terminal tail and follow log messages
~$ tail -f /var/log/messages
In another terminal run the loop
Then
1. plugin usb and keep it plugged in
2. remove battery, eject sd card.
3. put battery in
4. press vol- and power
5. after around 6 seconds, your terminal with the log will show something like "new high speed USB..."
6. press vol- to select recovery
7. press the power button
8. IMPORTANT- as soon as you see a new log entry (something like "USB disconnect"), pop in the sd card
check your loop terminal for adb. if it doesn't work, repeat at step 2

I have a rooted samsung captivate with sideloading enabled. After experimenting with different wifi tethering apps from the unofficial market, I began experiencing difficulties with my wifi connection. Even after uninstalling every app that I thought was changing the wifi state, the problem still persists. I can turn on the wifi and it will act normally for about 30 seconds before turning off without user intervention. In dmesg, the error is as follows: 'mmc1: Got command interrupt 0x00060001 even though no command operation was in progress.' Is this caused by an app or is this a more complicated problem?

I was just wondering if there was an Android environment that would let you run Android OS inside/alongside Windows, like Virtual PC basically, and let you have full connectivity just like if you were using your phone. I'm not sure what the utility could be right now but it sounds interesting to me.

I know android is based on linux, does this mean it can run any and all linux applications? If so has anyone tried to run anything like wine? I also noticed that by default you cant run apps directly from sd card, but i saw a modification on a site that lets you change it so you can, so technically speaking is there any limit on the size of sd the G1 can handle?

I've just started debugging my first three line long android app and I can't seem to use the debug tool like I want to. Here's my code:
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
int a = 1 / 0;
}
Now I expect the debugger to halt the thread and show me the line number of statement where the division by zero occurs. No, instead it shows some other method internal to the system for which I have no source. To make the matters worse, there is no exception message either. Prior to this app, I created one which would do something when a button was pressed. If any exception was raised, again no useful line number or exception message would be shown. As of right now, there is no way to debug my app. I'm using the latest SDK along with Eclipse ADT plugin and debugging on a real device (Nexus One).

I'm trying to make my app scriptable. Specifically, I need to expose a few Java APIs and make callbacks settable via user-written scripts. Ideally I'd like to hide some of the complexity away in a DSL, but there's no way of accomplishing what I want neatly without some form of user scripting, so I may accept another alternative if it meets my requirements. Initially I looked into Scala as that is my main language of choice, but the Scala interpreter is just a wrapper around its compiler, which I'm told won't run well if at all on the phone.
I've also tried JRuby, which worked under Cupcake. There appears to be a regression in the form of a Dalvik bug that prevents it from working under Donut, however:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4242
I've also seen the Android Scripting Environment. Am I correct in assuming that this only supports running full interpreters and not embedding scripting languages into apps?

Reading the sensor API (http://developer.android.com/reference/android/ hardware/SensorManager.html) The section about ACCURACY speak about calibration:
"calibration with the environment is needed"
How do it calibrate?! Is this software calibration? Phone specific calibration??
I don't see any methods to calibrate.
Using the HTC Magic the compass often give me crazy values like if I was on the magnetic pole. I feel pretty scared and hide under a tinfoil hat just in case...
So any url, doc or explanation!

I would like to use self defined Environment variables in my source code.
I use System.getenv() to do this and the code line looks like this. Log.d("MyTest","== MyEnv " + System.getenv("AP") + " ANDROID_ASSETS:" + System.getenv("ANDROID_ASSETS"));
Before I execute my code I define my AP variable with export: export AP="12345" and the this is my output of set command
ANDROID_ASSETS=/system/app
ANDROID_BOOTLOGO=1
ANDROID_DATA=/data
ANDROID_PROPERTY_WORKSPACE=9,32768
ANDROID_ROOT=/system
AP=12345
Then I execute my code and I get this line from logcat
D/MyTest( 5363): == MyEnv null ANDROID_ASSETS:/system/app
The value for my defined Environment variable is null. Any suggestions on why it didn't work?

I'm building an Android application and would like to maintain a few environment variables that I can tweak depending on whether I'm in development mode or release mode. For example, I need to invoke a web service and the URL will be slightly different in either mode. I'd like to externalize this and other settings so I can change them easily based on my target deployment. Distinguishing development mode and release mode environment settings on Android. Are there any best practices or anything in the SDK to assist with this need?

Looking at the example code in the docs
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/content/Context.html#getExternalFilesDir%28java.lang.String%29
File path = getExternalFilesDir(Environment.DIRECTORY_PICTURES);
It does not compile on 2.1. The static fields DIRECTORY_PICTURES, DIRECTORY_MUSIC etc. Don't seem to be found. Using the filter api checkbox, I see that it was removed in Android 2.2 (or api version 8). So the manifest file needs to contain minSdk defined as 7.
