I need to find where the bottlenecks are in my Android app.
What profiling tools or techniques can I use?
I've been running Eclipse on Mac OS X for android development. Since I'm new to eclipse I'm not sure how to profile my apps. Especially Memory usage. Could some one guide me to a direction please?
View 16 Replies View RelatedI'm getting started with OpenGL ES on Android and I'd looking to learn some techniques to have a game map larger than the visible area.I'm assuming I've somehow got to ensure that the system isn't rendering the entire scene, including what's outside of the visible area.I'm just not sure how I'd go about designing this. This is for simple 2D top-down tile based rendering. No real 3D except what's inherent in OpenGL ES itself.Would anyone be able to get me started on the right path? Are there options that might scale nicely when I decide to start tilting my perspective and doing 3D?

i am using for my mobile project in android platform
i use sqlite,i takes lot of time to retreive the data.
I need to explore the world "You wrote a killer application, but do you have an Android/iPhone/iPad client?".
My questions are:
1) which is the best way to send data to those devices? Soap and Rest as suggested here? Or are there some specific techniques? (My app is written in Delphi and I can expose data with webservices if needed)
2) For x-platform (where by x I mean basically apple products and android) development is there a tool? Or the only solution is write one client per platform that "embeds" a web application optimized for mobile devices?
3) which are the techniques for caching locally some data / working offline? Is it different in the 2 worlds or is it common?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm the developer of PowerTutor, a power profiling tool for the system. This tool profiles the system power consumption and decomposes power consumption on hardware components (e.g. LCD, Wi-Fi, CPU and etc.). It also assigns power consumption to individual application as the application is running alone in the system. In this way, it could potentially help developers to profile the app and detect energy inefficiency usage behavior in the application.
More details could be found at http://powertutor.org.
Note that PowerTutor is free to download and no advertisement is embedded. I'm posting this here to so that the Android community can be aware of it. Any one who cares about power consumption of their applications will find it useful.

View 4 Replies View RelatedHow do I find out how much memory my openGL application is using at any given moment, including sounds, textures, and everything else? I've been wrestling with DDMS for hours and all it seems to show me is basic object allocation counts. I must be missing something, but I haven't had any luck searching. LONG VERSION: I've got an otherwise operational beta Android game which crashes out after a while on my device (Droid X). I'm fairly sure my problem is that my textures are not being properly cleared from memory. I'd like to confirm this fact before I start blindly making changes. My game does fairly frequent level transitions. During these transitions I typically dump a texture file, wait a bit, then load a new one.
Over time the application performance degrades. After 10 or so transitions frame rate starts to take a nose dive. 10 or so more and it usually dies. Prior to dying I see log messages like this: 08-23 12:26:58.038: DEBUG/Cursor(1265): fillWindow is not executed because Cursor object is closed. 08-23 12:27:27.186: INFO/ActivityManager(1239): Low Memory: No more background processes. And then eventually: 08-23 12:27:46.952: INFO/ActivityManager(1239): Process com.thup.lunchbox (pid 4927) has died. There are no specific error messages of any sort. I've got lots of ideas for things to try to fix this (e,g, glDeleteTextures), but I really want a way to measure before I start trying to fix.
I started my emulator with ./emulator -trace profile -avd emulator_15. I then tracked down the trace files to ~/.android/avd/rodgers_emulator_15.avd/traces/profile, where there are six files: qtrace.bb, qtrace.exc, qtrace.insn, qtrace.method, qtrace.pid, qtrace.static. I can't figure out what to do with these files. I've tried both dmtracedump and traceview on all of the files, but none seem to generate any output I can do anything with.
How can I view the proportion of time taken by native method calls on Android?
My game - Tower Raiders - is continually floating fairly close to running out of bitmap memory. Unfortunately, I haven't found good information on profiling bitmap memory usage so that I can optimize / make informed decisions / add new content if it allows / etc.
I'm aware that bitmap memory is not heap memory, as it's allocated natively. But that it is accounted for somehow in the VM and influences garbage collection. Maybe it's an oversimplification of how bitmap memory works - but I'd like to find a tool etc or some way of determining I as the game is running right now, there are no more than X bytes of usable bitmap memory remaining.
So, if anyone has any advice etc that would help me in these respects I would greatly like to hear about a workflow for this.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am just going through a translation of resource files and I am wondering if there is additional support. At the moment I have both the base strings.xml and the localised version opened parallel in Eclipse. This quite works, but I am thinking of the following tools: - Showing both (or more) versions of a key together - Showing missing keys in a version - Integrating a lookup service (Google Translate, Wikipedia). I didn't find anything like this, is such a tool available?

What cannot be done using Titanium, for iPhone and for Android?
What things can only be done using only the the native tools?
I'm still pretty new to Android and programming in general, and I can't seem to get the command line tools packaged with the Android SDK to work. I'm running Mac OSX and each time I try to run layoutopt, for example, the terminal returns, *-bash: cmd: command not found. Also, is it okay to have my SDK located in the Developer directory and my android project in some unrelated directory when using these tools?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have much experience with Java, and am quickly getting to grips with Android. But I have very little experience with graphics... most of my work has been logical, back end web development. The last time I did any proper screen drawing was in the good old days of Applets (years ago).
I can see that Android has a very complex graphical interface, but I don't know where to start. I've looked at some of the sample apps that come with the SDK, but it's slow progress.
For example, I'm trying to learn by developing a simple rolling ball. Currently I'm using onDraw(Canvas canvas), a paint object, and path.addCircle() to draw a circle, which I then update frequently. However the result is jerky, and slow - I want to see it flying around the screen! Clearly this isn't the right way to go about it.
So two questions I suppose: 1) What graphics tools would you recommend to implement my example? 2) Where can I learn more about the graphics capabilities of android?
How can I integrate into the Android SDK tools to do for example: 1) See a list of installed devices 2) Start a new device to run 3) See a list of devices started 4) Install my application (uninstall before install). I got this from the command line but want to use it from an application.
