My problem is: Activity A called Activity B, and in Activity B, it start a background thread to do some client-server work. But it maybe takes too much time. So i add a cancel button to call the stop() method to stop the thread, and call finish() to finish the Activity B and go back to Activity A. Although it is back to Activity A, the thread isn't stop immediately. Can i just call the finish() to go back to Activity A, and leave the thread to exit by itself? If it is not the right way, which is?

I am basing my game off of the Lunar Lander demo.
The problem I am having is my game not restoring its last saved state when it comes back into focus.
When the game loses focus/quits it saves all the information to a Bundle correctly, then runs surfaceDestroyed() to shut down the thread.
When I restart the game, I thought onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) method was supposed to always start first, then restore the saved Bundle if it is not "Null". But because it sees that I have started/ created a thread last time, it jumps straight to surfaceCreated method.
The only thing I can think of is to find a way to get rid/destroy the thread so that it runs onCreate at the start. However the stop() and destroy() methods for threads have been depreciated. Is there anyway to do this? Or is there a better method of saving an instance of the game? code...

My application is basically a image viewer. It is opened from both camera and as a separate application.
I open the image viewer to view and edit the picture. Each edit operation is implemented using thread. If my application closes due to pressing the home button, the next time I open it with camera. It throws anr.
This doesn't always happen. Only when large edit operations or edit operations on large image files are done.
I get out of memory error, sometimes timeout.
I guess it s because the thread doesn't complete the edit operation when home is clicked. and it s still running on the background. so when i open it s unable to process it.
m I right?
If so what is the way to stop a thread before the completion?

I am fairly new to the Android scene, having just bought my HTC Desire. I am looking for an agenda widget where I can color-code my appointments (for example work related appointments are red, sports blue, family appointments green etc.) In the standard calendar that came with my Desire this is not possible, any suggestions?

Had a Treo 755p & LOVED my calendar! Just got a Droid and I HATE Google Calendar. I can't believe such great company hasn't listened to the users (look at all the posted all over the web!) and altered it to have color coded categories in ONE calendar. I'm really torn about the fun apps vs. the calendar I LOVED (tasks and notes were better too). I'm still within my 30 days, so unless I can find a 30-day color coded calendar view, I may just take it back. Has anyone found an app that works like the Palm calendar?

I'm adding Android C2DM to a Android library project. I started with the com.google.android.c2dm package that is included with JumpNote and Chrome To Phone. In order to use this package, you have to subclass the C2DMBaseReceiver service which takes the Sender Id as an argument to it's constructor. In JumpNote, this argument is initialized using a hard-coded static variable in a config class. However, in an Android library project, which may be used by multiple concurrently running apps I don't think I can use a hard-coded static variable (that is, I believe it could lead to problems when/if multiple apps are trying to access/modify the static variable). I tried to think of a way to initialize the Sender Id without using a static variable and am stumped so far.The obvious solution would be to use the Manifest or a Resource string or a combination of the 2. For example, in strings.xml I might have a "ac2dmSender" string, which is accessed in a meta-data child of the C2DMReceiver service declaration in the manifest. However, it seems that you cannot get a reference to the PackageManager or ResourceManager from a static context, so there is no way for me to then retrieve the meta data in such a way as to pass it in to the constructor of C2DMBaseReceiver.

Recently, I have tried to know what would happen to an alive thread, when the device goes to sleep. I program a simple activity that will create and start a thread printing "HERE AM I" repeatedly through Log.d. I expect the thread would be stopped after I "echo standby > /sys/android_power/request_state." The screen is off, but the thread still keeps alive and prints out "HERE AM I." I don't know why the thread can't be stopped. I test this through emulator (1.5cupcake) and G1(1.1?), but the results are the same. Could anyone give me some suggestions or hints about this question?

Dear all, I'm making a simple file decoder for Android 2.2 that needs to find the filename of the encoded file from a header. This filename should then be used as the filename for the decoded file (as you would expect).The filename is identified by the substring name=, so the actual name starts 5 places after that. The line is read by a BufferedReader and temporarily stored in currLine.For some reason I can't understand nor find on the web, Strings do not always seem to be Strings.Gives no output file, nor an IO exception. The string is parsed properly though: from the System.out debugging lines.

I am writing an application in which i need to handle messages between the main thread(the deafult UI related thread) and the user created Gamethread.
The requirement is like this.
An activity(say "Activity_X") is setting the view by "setContentView(some "View_Y")". In "Activity_X" i have implemeted "onCreateOptionsMenu()" and "onOptionsItemSelected()" fucntions for creating menus & a switch case for action to be taken on selecting those menus.Menu has items like "resume/pause/zoom/" .
All action to be take on selecting these menus are implemented in "View_Y" in a separate Gamethread by extending "Thread" class.
So whenever a menu is selected in "Activity_X" i need to send a message to "View_Y". And on receiving this ,a particular action/method should be called in View_Y(GameThread).
How can i achieve this using Handlers?Is there any other way of doing this? Please do share with me some code snippets for these.

I want to do the drawing in another thread to speed up the game(it is way to slow right now). I was told to do this but don't quite understand why that would speed things up. Is it GameView that should implement Runnable? Should I make the thread sleep when not drawing? where should I start the thread? package com.android.WWS;

Okay when user presses log out button what's supposed to happen is:
Code:
stopService(myIntent);
unbindService(mConnection);
mIsBound = false;
I need to shut down the service on background.Except the service restarts itself over and over again! Even if I kill the program from task manager the service restarts itself. Other programs aren't using the service. when I uninstalled the program the foreground program information popped up indicating it was STILL there(albeit this I solved by rebooting phone).
When user says he's finished with the program 'least he can expect is for the program to stay down rather than keep eating battery by acquiring GPS signal and sending them to server. The program is not intended to be "once you log in you need to Uninstall me and reboot phone to get rid of me!" type of program!

I have a bluetooth thread started that handles the bluetooth request. Once the connection is made the thread is killed and a Connected Thread is started. Once the Connected Thread is started I want to turn on GPS so I can start feeding the GPS data through the output of the bluetooth. The problem is, I can't get GPS to start in a seperate thread other than the main Activity. I don't want that to happen as I would like to have this run in the background and not be dependent on the main Activity. I have tried turning on the GPS from inside the Connected Thread but that always leads to a RunTimeException. how to get GPS to run in a thread?

I'm developing a game based on SurfaceView and a game thread for the whole game thing.Now I want to do some HTTP requests triggered on events inside the thread. They should of course be asynchronous, so the game doesn't stop. I found AsyncTask to be a neat way to do this but I'm having trouble implementing this at the moment. Maybe I misunderstood the concept of AsyncTask,I don't know it just drives me nuts as I read docs and blogs and still I don't get it. So sorry if that's a dumb question but I'm mad of thinking about it.
