Android :: Way To Make EditText Hint Not To Wrap?
Oct 18, 2010I have a one line EditText, when I set a long hint, the hint wraps to two lines. Can I force the EditText to be always one line tall? android:lines="1" didn't work.

View 1 RepliesMy EditText hint is not wrapping. A hint isn't very useful if the last part is cut off. I am very cautious about restricting/forcing the dimensions my EditText box to ensure it looks decent regardless of screen dimensions. Here's what the relevant xml looks like:
<EditText android:id="@+id/ET1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:gravity="left"
android:hint="@string/Hint1"
android:lines="3">
</EditText>
I've already set android:lines="3" to mitigate the issue, but it isn't enough. In order to maximize compatibility with various screen dimensions I would prefer OS wrapping over me putting in line breaks and hard returns in the string. There are other things happening in the view which also compel me to not manually set the width of the box to promote good breaks.
How to reduce EditText Hint size?

It works if I set android:gravity="left" or if I remove android:scrollHorizontally and android:singleLine attributes, which is not desirable.
I have been trying to get my EditText box to word wrap, but can't seem to do it.I have deal with much more complicated issues while developing Android applications, and this seems like it should be a straight-forward process. However, the issue remains, and I have a large text box that is only allowing me to enter text on one line, continuing straight across, scrolling horizontally as I enter text.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI want an EditText to look like TextView but still behave like EditText. I've tried applying TextView style to my EditText in my layout.xml file, like this:
CODE:............
But I get an error within xml editor: "Error: No resource found that matches the given name (at 'style' with value '@android:style/ Widget_TextView')." It is strange because @android:style/ Widget_TextView definitively exists - I double checked it in code via android.R.style.Widget_TextView. Another strange thing is that I don't get android:style offered in the xml editor while typing? There is android:id, android:text and everything else.. but not android:style?
I consider the hard way (making EditText look like TextView) to be: extending EditText and overriding it's onDraw method.
How do I make multiline EditText within a Relative Layout wrap the lines of text that were entered? I want the user to enter one line of text without allowing line breaks, but show it broken up by words into multiple lines inside a rather smallish, square EditText window.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn the Google Maps app, there's a unique EditText that I'd like to reproduce. If you click "menu" then go to "directions", the "start point" field should begin with "My Location" as the text. The interesting part of this field is its behavior - you cannot edit "My Location" without completely deleting it first. I have a few places where such behavior would be useful, but I can never quite fully reproduce this. There are three challenges involved with this behavior: No matter what the user does, they cannot partially edit the field; it is always fully selected. The keyboard directional keys, rather than moving around the EditText field, change focus. When the user does choose to change the text, the behavior of #1 and #2 disappear and the field acts like a normal EditText.

The default EditText size is too wide for me to show enough EditText controls on a screen, but I have been unable to figure out how to make them narrower. I have tried the following attributes in XML: android:maxLength="2" android:layout_width="20dip" android:maxWidth="20px" android:ems="2" android:maxEms="2". So the question is: how can EditText be made smaller than default?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am supporting search in my app, I'd like to display a unique hint in the search box depending on what activity is being viewed.
To that end, I have a two different searchable.xml files in my xml folder:

When I reference searchable.xml, everything works as expected. The second searchable xml file has the same contents as the first, but this does not work:

Pressing the search key does not display the search box. If I just reference the first searchable instead, it works fine:

Again, both have the same content. It looks like there is a dependency on the name "searchable.xml" within android?
If we're not allowed to have searchables named anything but searchable.xml, how do we specify different hint strings for different activities?
For example:

please help as to how i can align text as well as show hint..
If there was any way that I could get a hint at the bottom of an Edit Text view -- and then the user to start entering text at the top of the box.
As a bonus question, is there any way I can make the hint NOT disappear once the user starts entering text.
Adding an image on EditText works fine. However, copying an image is another problem. When I insert an image on EditText by using ImageSpan it shows correctly, but I copy inserted image, EditText shows me only 'obj'.

Every time I put a TextView before an EditText element in a LinearLayout, the EditText does not show. When I don't, it does.
I've narrowed the problem down to the TextView's layout_width attribute. If I give it "wrap_content", it works, but doesn't "block" down, and it appears on the same line as the EditText.
