Android : Way To "block Execution" While Dialog Is Up (.NET-style)?
Jan 8, 2010
Coming from the .NET-environment Im am now looking to understand how Dialogs work in Android. In .NET, when calling MessageBox.Show(...) that creates and shows a popup dialog. In the call to Show I can specify what buttons should be available in the popup.

I declared a WebView activity in the manifest like this. code...
When I start this activity within my main activity, only the title of the dialog, containing the apps name, is visible but not the WebView. If I add a TextView to the LinearLayout, it is shown as well, but still the WebView is missing.
If I don't apply android:theme="@android:style/Theme.Dialog" in the manifest, the WebView is displayed.
Why is that and how can I show a WebView in a dialog?

I am using an activity with the dialog theme set, and I want it to be full screen. I tried all sorts of things, even going through the WindowManager to expand the window to full width and height manually, but nothing works. Apparently, a dialog window (or an activity with the dialog theme) will only expand according to its contents, but even that doesn't always work. For instance, I show a progress bar circle which has width and height set to FILL_PARENT (so does its layout container), but still, the dialog wraps around the much smaller progress bar instead of filling the screen. There must be a way of displaying something small inside a dialog window but have it expand to full screen size without its content resizing as well?

I have an activity which uses android:theme="@android:style/Theme.Dialog". The activity contains an ImageView which can show images of different dimensions. The ImageView should scale the Image so that it entirely fits into the window, at least on axes fits entirely and maintains the original aspect ratio. The size of the dialog should only be as large as the ImageView (plus its border width).
I tried the following but the dialog window always uses the whole available space:

Any View have a constructor public View (Context context, AttributeSet attrs, int defStyle) which called when View declared with a style attribute So, if I have some class inherited from View class, I can access to declared attributes (like "android:layout_width" or "android:background") via AttributeSet attrs in a constructor. But when I move attributes to style I cannot see attributes and values exists in a style - I want to read items declared in style but I have only styleID in defStyle parameter. Is there some way to read style Items using styleID?

I've developed a fairly extensive application. The problem began when I started programming...my spinners are the solid gray rectangular style (unlike the newer style with the triangle in the lower right corner). When I started developing this app several months ago, I couldn't figure out why my spinners were different (after many hours) so I just ignored it. I'm at the point now of polishing my program and want the newer spinner style. So, I'm beating my head against the wall again. I went to my Android SDK Mananger in Eclipse and updated my Android SDK Tools, Platform-tools, and Build-tools. I have the lastest versions of all of these (22.3 and 19.0.1). When I create a new project, the newer spinner style appears. However, none of my older projects changed. They still have the same old gray, rectangular type spinners. I tried using a "android format" line command I found while Googling, but no luck with that either.I'm using ADT Bundle with build v22.2.1-833290 on a Mac OSX Mavericks.

I'm creating my own View class, and defining custom xml attributes with a attrs.xml. As long as I provide each attribute manually, there is no problem, but
code:...................
The android:text is properly set in my instance, but the borderDrawable is not. I guess this has something to do with namespaces, because inside the styles.xml, the name="mypack:borderDrawable" is not handled by the XML parser's namespace facility, because its inside an attribute value. So "mypack" is in no way connected to "http://some.weird.url.com/seems/not/to/ matter" and adding it via xmlns:mypack... to the stylefile would not help, I guess. In the same file, "android:text" is somehow recognized, even though "android" is AFAIK only a ns-defintion for [url], which is also not declared in that file.
So what is the proper way to set a custom attribute in a style?

I am having a problem about repeating Login dialog (an AlertDialog) and progress dialog, coordinating with http thread. I suppose repetitive Login dialog (if fail, continue) handling should be common and straightforward. I guess my approach must be wrong somewhere. I already spent 2 days on this and am desperate. So please help. User starts the app, the main activity starts.Show a login dialog (generated by the main thread, i.e. from on Create. The main thread then starts a wait_thread, which will wait for http to return data and check the data and decide what to do.After user input username/password and press login, a progress dialog starts.The progress dialog starts an http_thread to talk to the server and get replies. Once done, it will notify the waiting thread.If the user type in the right username password first time, the code works fine.But it always fail for 2nd time Login, i.e. When first login fail(wrong username/ password),the wait_thread will generate 2nd Login dialog to let user repeat the login process. But after user hit the login on this 2nd Login dialog, the system always crashes.

I am using Eclipse for Android development and Latest version of Android SDK (Running XP, 2Gb Ram)
1. when run clicked, previously executed emulator appears first then emulator default screen appears, only last current actual output appears
2. when clicked to close takes too much time (2 mns) for the emulator to disapper
3. in short execution time exceeds development/coding time in the testing process
is anyway to reduce such execution time

I have a really weird problem, which I am unable to debug so far. thing is. my app needs to download something to work. So in the beginning of the onCreate() method, I check if that something is already downloaded. If not, I pop a dialog up asking the user to download it.My dialog is shown and I am clicking, so aManager.install() is called. I am passing the context because that aManager.install() pops up a ProgressDialog to show downloading progress and spawns a new thread in which everything is downloaded. So obviously before creating my dialog I make a Handler to receive the response from that aManager.install(). And the response MAY vary, because for example the internet connection isn't available (Exception raised and catched and listener called with different code).Now, when that happens (Exception) I would like to call another dialog saying "something went wrong, would you like to retry?" so another call to showDialog(DIALOG_REINSTALL) (this time with another code).thing is the showDialog() gets called (I can verify this by logging) but the dialogs doesn't show up. Instead my application JUST HANGS Does someone have a clue why it's doing this? No exception raised, absolutely nothing from logcat, I can't tell WHERE it's hanging...just see that the method is called and the dialog should be displayed.

I later discovered that the MapView was showing a blank white screen with grey X's (zoom'd too far, zoom out once and everything looks as expected) for the use case when the collection of item's locations were very close to each other.
So, I modified the code from this:

I'm currently working on an app for the android os that requires to fetch data from a remote server from time to time. as this "update" should be carried out even when the actual frontend app is not running, i implemented a remote service that is started on system boot. now i need to schedule a timer to start the update. is the "Timer"-class the right one for this job? and if "yes": what is the difference between a "normal" Timer() and one started as a "daemon" by Timer(true)?

I saw on Internet some services that give you the possibility to test an Android app on the web: for example, Manymo launches an emulator on a remote server and give you the possibility to interact with it. AppSurfer let you test your Android app in an emulator-like environment. Pieceable Viewer is similar to AppSurfer but for iOS.
According to you, how these services are implemented?
Maybe there are some emulators running on a remote server on which run a vnc server, but looking at AppSurfer or PieceableViewer they looks too responsive for this implementation.

Occasionally I see thread execution hiccups on my Motorola Droid (currently running 2.1 but I saw it with 2.0.1, too). Normally my dummy thread (full tilt, foreground, not doing *anything* else) runs in about 5-6mS. However, I see a second hump around 13-14mS and stragglers anywhere out to 80mS (typically around 35mS, though). What is going on? Why is this scheduling so non-deterministically? What is the solution? I could deal with a couple mS slower if it would get rid of those stragglers that exist the whole way out to 50-80mS..................

I have an android app that repeatedly collects fingerprints from the wifi-networks that are around (for scientific reasons, not to invade anybodies privacy). Anyways, imagine I have a function that does this work and it's called scanWifi(). I initally wanted to start it like this:
ExecutorService mExecutor = Executors.newSingleThreadScheduledExecutor();
mExecutor.scheduleAtFixedRate(new Runnable() {
@Override
public void run() {
scanWifi();
}
}, 0, interval, TimeUnit.MILLISECONDS);
Sadly, this only works reliably when the phone is plugged in. If it's plugged out and lays there for a while, it doesn't run my scanWifi() function every minute. Sometimes there are gaps of several minutes between single calls to scanWifi(). I also tried doing the same thing using a Timer/TimerTask with similarly poor results. The only thing that seems to work more or less reliable until now is to post it to a handler and call it repeatedly, like this:
Handler h = new Handler();
Runnable r = new Runnable() {
@Override
public void run() {
if (!mIsStopped) {
scanWifi();
h.postDelayed(this, mInterval);
}
}
};
h.post(r);
Why is that the case? Is the CPU sleeping and thus misses the scheduled execution? I hold a partial wakelock in my app.
