I'm trying to run this piece of code inside my onCreate method as an initial test into writing private data for my app to use. This code is straight out of the Android SDK development guide located here (http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/data/data-storage.html#filesInternal)
CODE:................
However, this code give me errors for the 3 lines of code at the bottom. The error is an unhanded exception. The suggested quick fix is do to the following:
CODE:..........
But after doing that I get an error for the bottom two lines which states that fos may not be uninitialized. How can I fix this code? It's kind of annoying that the Android SDK gives you an example that doesn't even work.
I can't say I'm an expert at exception handling either.

My app consists of an Activity and a service that runs in the background. The service periodically checks a website for an alarm condition. When the service detects the alarm, it should put a user notification into the status bar. If the user clicks the notification, it should display the app's activity. If the activity is already running, that activity should become visible. If the activity is not currently running, it should be created.
However the notification created by my service *always* creates a new instance of the activity, whether the activity is currently running or not. How do I get the desirable behavior?
Here is my service pseudo-code:
CODE:...............

I want to let you know about a glitch with HTC's calendar that I have noticed and that HTC confirmed to me today on the telephone.Occasionally, when creating a calendar event, the calendar app will record the event as being one day later than the date selected by the user. Apparently, according to the HTC rep with whom I spoke, this issue is known and they are working on it.Clearly, it is a software glitch, but it is a particularly unhelpful one for those of use relying on accurate calendars

I have a message thread between my fiance and I. But, for some reason, when i send her an MMS, it will create a new thread. So, then i will have 2 message threads between the same contact. Even when I am in the actual thread itself and try to add a photo that way, as soon as i click send, it appears as if the mms will go inside the same thread i'm already in, but then it disappears and when i go back to my conversations page, it shows as a new thread. Then all further sms' received will go inside the new thread the MMS created.
I already tried [URL] .... but all that did was merge the threads together, but, then again, i send an MMS and it creates a new thread.
i did notice, however, when i use SMS Backup and Restore and i use the "Backup selected threads" feature, it will show the phone number in different formats. EX: +1xxxxxxxxxx and +1 xxx-xxx-xxxx
I know that has something to do with it because every time i tried the method in the link above, The new MMS that created a new thread, will show up in the .xml file under a different number format than the other SMS'.
I don't understand why my phone doesn't recognize the number formats as the same contact .
Here is a screenshot of what i mean by 'Multiple Threads for the Same Contact'

My text thread with my girlfriend is over 4000 messages long, causing significantly noticeable lag-time. I've tried to delete the entire thread with her, but it just freezes up the program and I have to force quit it, and it won't delete the thread. Is there any way to erase all text messages at once, preferably from outside the program?

Whenever I tether my laptop via the USB cable it takes a long time for the laptop to connect and when it does, it says "Connected to Network X", where X is a number. Everytime I reconnect via USB X increases by 1 so the last time I did it I was on Network 43!!!!! I accept that this could be in part a windows thing and not a GS3 thing BUT when I connect via a Wifi Hotspot it connects really really quickly and always says I am connected to AndroidAP. Its as if the USB tethering firmware is
Therefore connecting via hotspot seems much more stable and smooth however I was under the impression that the laptop internet speed will be quicker using USB tether rather than wifi and as I primarilly use my SGS3 as my home broadband connection I want to try and configure it to get the fastest speed on my laptop as possible. If I do an internet speed check on my SGS3 while my laptop is tethered the phone connection is always faster than the doing the same on the laptop. I guess this should be perhaps expected but as much as 4Mbits/s. I.e My phone was getting speeds of 6Mbits/sec but without having any apps open on the phone, my laptop would only get 2Mbits/s?

I have looked around a bit and I found TimingLogger on the Android SDK, and instructions here. It looks very convenient. But I can't get it work. This is my code:

I am using Eclipse for Android development and Latest version of Android SDK (Running XP, 2Gb Ram)
1. when run clicked, previously executed emulator appears first then emulator default screen appears, only last current actual output appears
2. when clicked to close takes too much time (2 mns) for the emulator to disapper
3. in short execution time exceeds development/coding time in the testing process
is anyway to reduce such execution time

My application has a MapView which shows a collection of items in a satellite view. I use the MapController's zoomToSpan() method to initialize the zoom level of MapView. I later discovered that the MapView was showing a blank white screen with grey X's (zoom'd too far, zoom out once and everything looks as expected) for the use case when the collection of item's locations were very close to each other.
So, I modified the code from this:

I'm currently working on an app for the android os that requires to fetch data from a remote server from time to time. as this "update" should be carried out even when the actual frontend app is not running, i implemented a remote service that is started on system boot. now i need to schedule a timer to start the update. is the "Timer"-class the right one for this job? and if "yes": what is the difference between a "normal" Timer() and one started as a "daemon" by Timer(true)?

I saw on Internet some services that give you the possibility to test an Android app on the web: for example, Manymo launches an emulator on a remote server and give you the possibility to interact with it. AppSurfer let you test your Android app in an emulator-like environment. Pieceable Viewer is similar to AppSurfer but for iOS.
According to you, how these services are implemented?
Maybe there are some emulators running on a remote server on which run a vnc server, but looking at AppSurfer or PieceableViewer they looks too responsive for this implementation.

Occasionally I see thread execution hiccups on my Motorola Droid (currently running 2.1 but I saw it with 2.0.1, too). Normally my dummy thread (full tilt, foreground, not doing *anything* else) runs in about 5-6mS. However, I see a second hump around 13-14mS and stragglers anywhere out to 80mS (typically around 35mS, though). What is going on? Why is this scheduling so non-deterministically? What is the solution? I could deal with a couple mS slower if it would get rid of those stragglers that exist the whole way out to 50-80mS..................

I have an android app that repeatedly collects fingerprints from the wifi-networks that are around (for scientific reasons, not to invade anybodies privacy). Anyways, imagine I have a function that does this work and it's called scanWifi(). I initally wanted to start it like this:
ExecutorService mExecutor = Executors.newSingleThreadScheduledExecutor();
mExecutor.scheduleAtFixedRate(new Runnable() {
@Override
public void run() {
scanWifi();
}
}, 0, interval, TimeUnit.MILLISECONDS);
Sadly, this only works reliably when the phone is plugged in. If it's plugged out and lays there for a while, it doesn't run my scanWifi() function every minute. Sometimes there are gaps of several minutes between single calls to scanWifi(). I also tried doing the same thing using a Timer/TimerTask with similarly poor results. The only thing that seems to work more or less reliable until now is to post it to a handler and call it repeatedly, like this:
Handler h = new Handler();
Runnable r = new Runnable() {
@Override
public void run() {
if (!mIsStopped) {
scanWifi();
h.postDelayed(this, mInterval);
}
}
};
h.post(r);
Why is that the case? Is the CPU sleeping and thus misses the scheduled execution? I hold a partial wakelock in my app.

I have an activity that starts a long-running service which in turn adds an icon to the status bar. When the activity gets invisible, e.g. by pressing the Home button, and the pressing the icon in the status bar a new activity is created instead of showing the already created activity. If you now press the back button the new activity is destroyed and the activity created in the first place gets visible. How do I make the invisible activity brought to front when pressing the icon in the status bar instead of creating a new activity?

I am about to develop a web application for smart phones. This app uses some JavaScript code. While testing it on Android devices (Hero, Desire) I noticed that all JavaScript timers immediately stop when the page is moved or zoomed. They never continue. Let's say you have a site which displays web camera images with 5 fps. As soon as you move this page (I mean scroll with finger) the web camera image will never be loaded again. So you can't center or zoom the image at all without stopping the stream. This behaviour is 100% reproducible on all Android devices I tested (1.5, 2.1). It does not appear on an iPhone which continues execution after moving stopped fine.
