Android :: VerifyError Or Using OverridePendingTransition While Maintaining Compatibility?

Aug 26, 2010

I've got an application that uses overridePendingTransition to do some custom animations upon transitioning from one activity to the other. This was made available in Android 2.0, but I want to make the application work on Android 1.6. I figured if I just checked that android.os.Build.VERSION.SDK_INT > android.os.Build.VERSION_CODES.DONUT, and if not, don't do the overridePendingTransition.

However, I get a VerifyError, which I assume is caused by this: VFY: Unable to resolve virtual method 346: ../../Login: overridePendingTransition (II)V

Is it not possible to use newer functionality conditionally based on the SDK version?

Android : Use SDK 1.5 Features While Maintaining SDK 1.0,1.1 Backward Compatibility

Apr 14, 2009

I want to avoid the SDK 1.0 and 1.1 workaround for playing synthesized audio as of SDK1.5, but for older phones or firmware (SDK 1.0 and 1.1 based) I want to maintain backward compatibility and first write audio to flash memory in order to play the resulting audio file from there.

Android :: Always Getting Java.lang.VerifyError On 1.6

Android :: VerifyError Issue With 1.5 Devices

Jan 14, 2010

I got an error message from a user that runs Android 1.5. The error reported os a java.lang.VerifyError and it seems to be based on the method setBuildInZoomControls missing. The thing is that this method should be there on an Android 1.5 device and my app's manifest specifies the minimum sdk level as "3".

<uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="3" android:targetSdkVersion="4"></uses-sdk>

The documentation for that method says that it is available on level 3: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/webkit/WebSettings.htm...)

So why do I get this error message?

Android :: Maintaining Both Free And Pro Versions Of Application

Mar 27, 2010

I want to create a PRO version of my application for Android and was wondering how to structure my repository. For know I have a trunk and feature branches. I'd like to put a pro version in another branch but maybe there is a better way? For example, maybe I should create two branches - one for free version, the other for pro?

Pro version will have additional features and will be ads-free, so e.g. I don't want to include AdMob libraries in the pro version. Do you have any experience or suggestions as to what would be the best way to structure the repository in this case? I think I've found the best solution (for my app) in this thread:
http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/4ad3d67f735f16d7/948b4f9eee2490a3

The trick discussed there is about having another application that only serves the purpose of unlocking PRO functionality in the actual application. The unlocking app is paid in the market and the actual app merely checks for the existence of it on the device.

Android :: Can't Catch Java.lang.VerifyError

Jan 6, 2010

I'm getting this error: "Uncaught handler: thread main exiting due to uncaught exception java.lang.VerifyError" It's only happening on 1.6. Android 2.0 and up doesn't have any problems, but that's the main point of all. Can't catch the Error/Exception (VerifyError), and I know it's being caused by calling isInitialStickyBroadcast() which is not available in SDK 4, that's why it's wrapped in the SDK check. I just need this BroadcastReceiver to work on 2.0+ and not break in 1.6, it's an app in the market, the UNDOCK feature is needed for users on 2.0+ but obviously not in 1.6 but there is a fairly amount of users still on 1.6.

private BroadcastReceiver mUndockedReceiver = new BroadcastReceiver()
{
@Override
public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent)
{
//FROM ECLAIR FORWARD, BEFORE DONUT THIS INTENT WAS NOT IMPLEMENTED
if (Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= 5)
{
if (!isInitialStickyBroadcast()) {
int dockState = intent.getExtras().getInt("android.intent.extra.DOCK_STATE", 1);
if (dockState == 0)
{
finish();
}
}
}
}
};

Android :: Maintaining Scroll Position Of ListView

Apr 7, 2009

In my app, my main class extends ListActivity and calls a fillData() function to reload the list whenever changes are made. I'm still getting the hang of this, so I borrowed that concept from the Android Notepadv1-Notepadv3 tutorials. Everything works great, however whenever I need to change the list (remove an item, re-sort it, edit an item), the ListView refreshes and loses its scroll position. The scroll position is reset to the top after each fillData() call.

It appears to be resetting the scroll position to the top because I'm using setListAdapter() each time in fillData(), setting it to a new SimpleCursorAdapter. How can I get the list to "update in place", where the scroll position is seamlessly maintained to the user? I tried heading down the "items.changeCursor(cursor)" path, but that didn't seam to do much for me.......................

I'm trying to add a drawable to a layout, using an ImageView, but the drawable doesn't maintain its size and is rendered at 1dp x 1dp. I've called ImageView.setAdjustViewBounds as per the android documentation but this doesn't seem to help. The Drawable is only visible when the ImageView's height and width are set and the drawable is then rendered at those dimensions.

Android :: VerifyError Attempting To Use Commons-digester

Mar 16, 2009

I'm trying to write a simple web service client app for Android, and I'd like to use commons-digester to convert the service's XML responses into objects I can work with. However, I'm getting a VerifyError as soon as I try to invoke any Digester method.

I've set up my dependencies (external jars) using Maven (the Masa Android plugin for Maven, and the Maven Plugin for Eclipse). The Masa plugin seems a little bit bleeding edge, so that may somehow be the source of the problem, but I can't be sure.

How can I debug this issue further, and what, if anything, can I do to resolve it? Is it not possible to use a library as simple as Digester on the Android platform?

Here is my complete error output:

Android :: VerifyError - Arbitrarily Rejecting Large Method

Oct 13, 2010

I'm working on an android application for the analysis of measurements (e.g, blood pressure) using a Bayesian network model (PEModelOR is the class in my android application), which is embedded in a smart phone. Since the measurements are to be taken at sequential times, the model contains a number of variables referring to different time controls. With the initial version with 2 controls the model run without a problem but when I extended the model to 4 controls it crashed producing the following error:

CODE:.......

I saw that in a recent discussion http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa... Dirk has encountered the same problem but unfortunately I could not see any solution to that. The extended PEModelOR method runs without problems in Java but it fails in the android application due to the dalvikvm verifier as far as I understood. The PEModelOR method is a description of a Bayesian Network in java and it simply contains definition of 62 variables and 62 probability distribution tables (in total 700 lines and the java file is 41 KB); below is a sample of the code (note that BayesNet is a class loaded via external jar):

CODE:......

Does the size/definition of PEModelOR cause the problem? I'm not sure how I can split it as it needs to be loaded at once for creating the network and running the model with available measurements. The thing is that this is even not the final version of the model, where the goal is to have 11 time controls, ending up with 112 variables and probability tables, and 1245 lines.

Is there a way out or alternative of implementing PEModelOR so that it does not fail at verification?

General :: SGSII - Maintaining WhatsApp Conversations

May 15, 2012

I have a SGSII and recently i switched from the official ICS rom to CM9 (build date 20 april). I expected to get a better battery life since CM9 is so populair. Unfortunately this isn't the case and so i want to switch back. Only thing is, last time i switched, all my whatsapp conversations were blanc. I couldn't retrieve any old conversations. I know you can email the conversations to yourself but that's not what i want (or is it possible to use these emails in some kind of way to get the conversations back into whatsapp???). Is it possible to backup all my conversations so i can put them back into whatsapp after i flashed the phone to another rom (probably the official rom).

Also, as you can see, I'm not fond of CM9 although this is the most populair rom. Did i do something wrong? I'm a heavy whatsapp user and even when i'm charging the battery drains when using whatsapp (brightness auto and stable WiFi connection). I never game on my device or use bluetooth or gps. I mostly use my phone for facebook, whatsapp, twitter and browsing. Also my phonesignal drops sometimes and my 3G is also worse than before.

Is there a ROM which will give me with my requirements the best Battery life + phonesignal (3G)??

Android :: Screen Compatibility Not Quite Right

Nov 21, 2009

<supports-screens android:anyDensity="false" android:largeScreens="false" android:normalScreens="true" android:smallScreens="false" android:resizeable="false"></supports- screens>

first of all what is the resizeable attribute? It does not seem to be documented. This is working almost 90% for my game except when testing in WVGA screen resolution, all my images are scaled incorrectly, it is longer vertically than horizontally. I was expecting the screen compatibility to maintain aspect ratios as that of HVGA.

Also in my layout I have a scrollview and it is designed in such a way that in HVGA when it is not scrolled down, the items are hidden away, however now in WVGA those things are shown. If the aspect ratio of HVGA is maintained I won't have this issue. How can I make sure the aspect ratio is maintained? Also in my layout I am positioning some items using pixel positions. Should I convert these to dpi? How do I calculate what dpi they should be?

Android :: Application Compatibility Between SDK 1.5 And 1.6

Oct 12, 2009

What is the recommended approach to have currently shipping 1.5-SDK compliant apps to start offering 1.6 features (such as TTL) in the Market? Can we just publish 2 versions of the same package name each compiled with a different SDK level (will the Market automatically push out only the right version of the app) or do we have to use different package name and assume that the user will find a way to understand the version of the OS he has. A public statement to the developper community would be more than welcomed here!

Android :: DevPhone1 SDK Compatibility

Apr 21, 2010

I've found again my DevPhone1 (aka G1) on a shelf and though that this time I should really give it a try and create an app for it. But I've really lost touch with the Android world and now I don't know where to start really. There have been many SDK releases lately for many new and better devices. Which one of these can I use with G1? What is the most recent one which can be used on that hardware (although with reduced performance) but which will enable development for rather modern Android releases as well. The firmware update received today, while recharging the phone, is 1.6. Can I go higher with some R&D build?
