Android :: Using VideoView For Streaming Or Progressive Download

I'm confused about how VideoView can be used to play video: from a local file, as progressive download and streaming. This example work for me (on 1.5 and 2.0 at least) by downloading the file and playing it locally. But is it necessary to download the video before playing: is it possible to play video as progressive download, or by streaming, simply by using setVideoPath or setVideoURI, as in VideoViewDemo in the API samples?
The VideoViewDemo code suggests using setVideoURI for streaming, but I'm not clear what kind of URL I should be using. Does someone have an example URL for a video that can be streamed to the Android emulator using the VideoViewDemo code? Can progressive download be used with VideoViewDemo? I get a 'sorry, this video cannot be played' message using setVideoPath with URLs that work fine with the blog example linked to above.(Is this a problem in the emulator? I've tried 1.5 and 2.0.)

I am trying to stream video (or use progressive download) to a Motorola Droid Browser and am not having a lot of luck. With my iPhone, I can direct Safari to http://xxx.xxx.xxx/FileName.mp4 (which is an MPEG-4 video file) and Safari opens quicktime and the video plays. However, with the Droid, I go to the same web address and am faced with a error stating "Cannot play video. Sorry, this video is not valid for streaming to this device".
When I direct the Droid's browser to a WMV file, it will fully download the video file and then play it in what appears to be the Droid video player if I click on it. Ideally, I'd like to replicate the behavior of the iPhone on the Droid, where the video player pops up and the video starts before the complete download. Video format isn't an issue, as I can encode the video to pretty much any standard. I was trying the .mp4 file because the Droid documentation says that it supports MPEG-4 video, although I can't get it to work from the browser.

When I use the VideoView to play the RTSP streaming, the VideoView will buffering some cache buffer. Is there any method to tell the VideoView DON'T buffer? My code:

when a video is played over http (progressive download), in some cases, the application stops the current http connection and continues the download using a new http request with a range header. closing the connection is the phone choice, not server. somebody knows in which cases the phone behaves this way?

I have a couple questions regarding audio streaming/progressive download over HTTP. Could you please help me?
1. MediaPlayer supports progressive download according to the developer guide from this link http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/media/index.html ("If you're passing a URL to an online media file, the file must be capable of progressive download."). As far as I understand progressive download means media playback during download process with saving the media file to file system(SD card or internal FS) after the downloading is finished (if it's a file, not a stream in the passed URL). So, I tried to set the following URL: setDataSource (http://84.204.154.49/mmapi/music.mp3). Playback is fine, but the file isn't saved to SD card or internal phone file system. Can MediaPlayer save media content to the file system after downloading is completed? Is there a way to turn on such capability?
2. Does MediaPlayer support HTTP streaming? I tried to use http://217.10.32.134:8129/ultrafan128.mp3, http://62.32.66.180:8800, also AMR-, AAC- audio stream over HTTP on the local server, but playback does not work. For example, RTSP streaming works fine with AMR and AAC.

I have a problem in playing video file in android using VideoView. When I keep the .3gp video file locally in res/raw folder, the video file plays successfully. But when I keep this same file on live web server and stream it, it runs on Android G1, Nexus one and Tatoo which I have for testing. But It fails to stream and play on Motorola milestone. I got the error on device as: 'This video is not valid for streaming'. What problem it should be, I am really seek of finding it. Is it the issue of programming or file format?

I am creating video playing app from Youtube. I have extracted Video Data using gdata API and got 3gp url for format 1,6. This i got extracted from Media:Group --> Media:content element. My Device Info Android Version 4.0.3.
These video is working in VLC Player but not in VideoView in my app. Here is my code:

My app uses streaming (i think the correct term is progressive download) for videos. To be able to do that, the mp4 file must be hinted and I manage to do that. Now, is there a suggested or advisable settings for the mp4 like the bit rates, resolution, frame rate etc so that the playback is smooth?

I have several videos (TV episodes of stuff) hosted through a web server on my local intranet. When trying to play with my Evo, I get this message. After downloading, the videos play fine...but I'd rather not have to wait for the download to finish every time (and I'm not entirely sure where they're kept at, or if they'll fill up my storage).
Additionally, I have a subfolder setup that's .htaccess protected. I'm unable to download or play any files from this folder from my phone. All of this worked from my iPhone, so I'm scratching my head a bit.
Another issue I'm having that someone may be able to shed some light on: Using Windows 7, I can't see to get my Evo to show up as a disk drive. Selecting "mount as disk drive" in my Evo seems to have no effect. I got it to work once by unplugging and plugging it back in several times (once), but it refuses to work now.

I am trying to stream video over https from Android browser. If the video URL is http, everything works fine. But when I switch the url to https, no video can be played. I tried 2 methods to stream over http/ https through Android browser.
1. Use html5 Video tag on browser (Android 2.0+ device) and call video.play( ) from javascript. - With Https url. Browser launches media player and the player displays alert dialog saying "Can't play video". I captured the client TCP traffic and found no SSL handshake between client and server. It looks like the player pops up the alert on any https link. - With Http url. Browser launches media player and the player can stream the video successfully.
2. Use direct link of html <a> tag on browser and click the link - With Https url. Browser downloads the video file without launching the player. The browser seems not try to load any https link in media player. - With Http url. Browser launches media player and the player can stream the video successfully.
So the above tests make me think Android media player cannot play media from any https url.

I have a VideoView and I set a VideoURI that is basically http://foo.com/videoName?authentication=xyz When the url is hit, some authentication is processed, then the url gets redirected to rtsp://foo2.com/videoName.3gp for example.
The VideoView seems to not be able to follow the redirect to play the video. If I use the rtsp directly I can play the video though.

I think that I found a problem with Android SDK in a relative form, try to add An ImageView and A VideoView In an activity, retrieve your VideoView and try to retrieve his SurfaceHolder....Your application have to crash with a real big tracelog in LogCat.

I am using VideoView to display a video in my app. The problem is that, once the layout gets created there is lag of almost 10-30 seconds before which the video starts to play. I can see in LogCat that the video is buffering during the lag. Is there a way I can minimize this lag, or tell MediaPlayer to play the video sooner?

Seems simple, but even with video files that I've seen work in other video players on the phone, I keep getting the "Sorry, this video cannot be played" message. And this associated debug info: INFO/MediaPlayer-JNI(234): prepareAsync: surface=0x1a3ff0 (id=1) ERROR/MediaPlayer(234): Error (-4,0) DEBUG/VideoView(234): Error: -4,0
what those errors mean or how I can fix this? If this is not how I should be using VideoView please let me know. I'd appreciate being sent in the right direction for how to get a local video file playing within a view.

Our video server protect video data with cookie authentication. Video player app must authenticate and store session key to cookie strage before access to video server. First, My android video player app access to authentication server using HttpClient class in android library. Next, app access to video server with HttpClient's cookie data. But I think HttpClient can't pass cookie data to VideoView.

I have a bit of a problem with a SlidingDrawer that I created and that should go over my VideoView. When the activity is opened for the first time you can see the slider above the video and when you tap it, it slides open. However, as soon as you close the slider it seems to disappear underneath the VideoView and is not visible anymore. It is still there and when you tap the location where the handle is located the slidingDrawer reappears, but I would rather prefer if it wasn't hiding all the time ;) If anyone knows what I can do about that and help me out, that would be really fantastic because I have been trying for hours now and I have no idea what I should do. I also haven't found a similar issue or a solution for that.

VideoView cannot play long path video issue: Bug#8699
enviroment: Platform 2.0 simulator and G2 H/W.
If setVideoPath("/data/data/com.abc.android.abcd/Transformers.mp4");
It can play well.
While, If setVideoPath("/data/data/com.abc.android.abcd/content/ Transformers.mp4");
It cannot play.
Btw: familiar things occured when I display the jpeg file
bit = BitmapFactory.decodeFile(fileName); mImgView.setImageBitmap(bit);
If the fileName is /data/data/com.abc.android.abcd/content/2.jpeg It cannot display
While, If the fileName is /data/data/com.abc.android.abcd/2.jpeg It display well.
