Android : Transparent Background Overlay Of SurfaceView Broken On 1.5?

Jun 17, 2009

I believe I have found a graphics bug introduced in the 1.5 platform. I'm looking for some confirmation (or a description of what I'm doing wrong) before reporting it as a real bug.

I have a SurfaceView that fills the screen and on top of that I have a LinearLayout that wraps some other components that overlay the surface. These other components are not visible most of the time, and the LinearLayout has a transparent background so that the SurfaceView is unobstructed until the other components are made visible. Under 1.0 and 1.1 this all worked with a background of #00000000 for the LinearLayout. Now under 1.5 there is a black rectangle obstructing my surface unless I give the LinearLayout background some color. I can still keep the transparency so it is still invisible as it should be but it is strange that it can't be black and invisible anymore. My layout is below. The background of #00000001 works, but changing it to #00000000 results in a black rectangle. code...

Android :: SurfaceView Transparent Through Its Parent

Feb 11, 2009

I have a SurfaceView that is covering a portion of its parent, a RelativeLayout. I have a background image covering the full RelativeLayout area, and this is my Activity's main layout.

I would like to have the SurfaceView be transparent so that I can see through to the background image on its parent RelativeLayout. I have tried the approach shown in the API Demos example TranslucentGLSurfaceViewActivity, but this succeeds in making the transparency go all the way through my Activity to my desktop!

I'm using the "style/Theme.Translucent" theme on my activity, and setting this on my SurfaceView: mySurfaceView.getHolder().setFormat(PixelFormat.RGBA_8888);

The transparency to the desktop it kinda cool, but not what I'm trying to do! Is it possible to make a SurfaceView transparent only through to its parent?

Android :: Overlay Transparent Bitmap On Camera

Aug 10, 2010

I'm passing a bitmap through a bundle to an activity which I called cameraView on which the user has access to the camera of the device. I'd like to overlay that bitmap with transparency using the camera as the background. Is it possible? to put the bitmap in front of the camera? And how can I change the transparency level? Here is my code: This is the camview.xml:

<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<SurfaceView android:id="@+id/surface_camera" android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="10dip" android:layout_weight="1"> </SurfaceView> </RelativeLayout>

And this is the java:
public class cameraView extends Activity implements SurfaceHolder.Callback{
SurfaceView mSurfaceView; SurfaceHolder mSurfaceHolder;
Camera mCamera; boolean mPreviewRunning=false; private Context mContext = this;
public void onCreate(Bundle icicle) { super.onCreate(icicle);
setContentView(R.layout.camview); Bundle f = getIntent().getExtras();
picture = f.getParcelable("bitmap"); mSurfaceView = (SurfaceView) findViewById(R.id.surface_camera); mSurfaceHolder = mSurfaceView.getHolder();
mSurfaceHolder.addCallback(this); mSurfaceHolder.setType(SurfaceHolder.SURFACE_TYPE_PUSH_BUFFERS);
} @Override // Create the Surface and Open the Camera
public void surfaceCreated(SurfaceHolder holder) { mCamera = Camera.open();
} @Override // Reacts for camera changes public void surfaceChanged(SurfaceHolder holder,
int format, int w,int h) { if (mPreviewRunning) { mCamera.stopPreview();
} Camera.Parameters p = mCamera.getParameters(); p.setPreviewSize(w, h);
mCamera.setParameters(p); try { mCamera.setPreviewDisplay(holder);
} catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace();
} mCamera.startPreview(); mPreviewRunning = true;
} @Override // When the camera is closed
public void surfaceDestroyed(SurfaceHolder holder) { mCamera.stopPreview();
mPreviewRunning = false; mCamera.release(); }
// When the picure is taken. This method gives the byte[] of the picture
Camera.PictureCallback mPictureCallback = new Camera.PictureCallback() {
public void onPictureTaken(byte[] imageData, Camera c) {
} };

Android :: Activity Should Be Transparent / But Has Black Background

Apr 22, 2010

My use case is writing an overlay controller activity for a landscape camera preview. I followed the instructions from a couple of tutorials for writing a transparent theme.When I start this activity from my root activity, the layout gets drawn correctly, but the background stays black. I tried to use @android:style/Theme.Translucent instead, but this Theme inherits the orientation from the calling activity (landscape) and thats not what I want.The application holding the camera preview is set to landscape view as it does not display the preview correctly in portrait orientation. (see old google bug report)What I wanted to do was to put an independent activity for user interaction interface in front of the camera surface holder (this activity should be set to 'portrait', or even better to 'sensor')

Android :: Application Background Image With Transparent Activities

Oct 29, 2010

I have run into an requirement of my application that i cant find a way to do this.

I need my application to be fullscreen and no title bar (done), and this application will have a background image. However, all the activities/views of my application must be transparent/translucent so the application background will be visible all the time behind the information i am displaying.

Basically i would like to have this behavior

http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/amazon-kindle-android-app.jpg

supousing that the image you see is not the phone wallpaper, but the application background image. What would be the application configuration in the manifest file and what would be the configuration for eacy activity/view?

I also noticed that, i need to setup each activity to be fullscreen without title bar. Is there a way to do this globaly in the application so all activities will behave this way?

I can set the background image to a resource in an xml file, and I can also change the color of a TextView on event firing, but for some reason I can't do both at the same time. Android :: SurfaceView Vs Custom View / SurfaceView Is Slower

Aug 20, 2010

One using a Surfaceview, and the other using a custom view. According to the android SDK development guide, using a surface view is better because you can spawn a separate thread to handle graphics. Th SDK development guide claims that using a custom view with invalidate calls is only good for slower animations, less intense graphics.However, in my simple app, I can clearly see that using a custom view with calls to invalidate seems to render faster.What do you guys know/think about this?My touchEvent code is exactly the same, and my drawing code is exactly the same. The only difference is that one is all in the UI thread, and the other is using a tread to handle the drawing.
