Android :: To Mock Sqlite3 Cursor When No Db / Table Exists?

Sep 16, 2010

I am using a ContentProvider for caching results from a web-service query. It is an HTTP request and the response content is XML. Most of the data is cached, so I simply query the DB, if not found, request from webservice, insert in DB and requery the DB. Thus the response is always a Cursor from SQLiteDatabaseHelper.
I have one result set that is not stored in the DB and since it is 100% transient, but I would like to provide the appearance of it coming from the DB's Cursor. Is there an easy way to do this? For example, if I could project it onto the cursor with a cursor.setValue("string", objectValue) or some other existing implementation.
If not, I will either bypass the DB for this content result, or stuff it into a trivial table that is constantly reused.

Android :: Get SQLite3 To Use / Sdcard Database?

Mar 9, 2009

I'd really appreciate a pointer to some actual working example code on how to use the Andy-SQLite3 engine on the device to access a db stored on the /sdcard when using Andy-SDK 1.0_r2. Since I have an ADP1 I am not using 1.1_r1 until the upgrade is available on ADP1 'Andys'. The device space will not hold the database, so I need the /sdcard, but I am open to creating an sdcard database and attaching it to a 'starter' database in the device space if somebody has done that successfully and would share example code for that.

Android :: Child Views Of Particular Table Row In Table Layout?

Jul 15, 2009

Here is my screen description: It is a TableLayout and it contains multiple Rows. I have set TableRow as clickable, as I want to go to next screen on click of a tableRow. Everything I am doing through Java programming (instead of XML layout, because number of TableRows changes each time) On next screen, I wanted to display all the views of that particular clicked TableRow. Here the problem i am facing is how to capture particular tableRow on onclick() even and how do I get all the textviews of that particular Row. I tried to set id at runtime, and tried to get id of view, but it's not working, giving error resourcenotfoundexception.

Android :: Adding Table Row By Inflating Does Not Take Table's Settings

Nov 4, 2010

I have a table layout with a few predefined rows in it. Each row has only two columns.

Now I need to dynamically add additional rows in it.

I have two problems:

1) When programmatically inflating, I cannot set the index of the newly created row (I want it in place 'n') 2) After inflation, the inserted (actually appended) row doesn't listen to parent table's stretch column property.

So here are my questions:

q1) Can I set the place where to insert the inflated row programatically ?

q2) Why doesn't the new row inflate properly (the second column is not shown because the first column doesn't contains a TextView with fill_parent.

In the end I need the first column to occupy 80% of the screen width, and the second column remaining 20%.

q3) is that doable with programmatic row insertions ?

Android :: Moving Cursor Adapter Cursor Creation To Background Thread

Mar 29, 2010

The structure of some of my activities is a simple ListView with a custom CursorAdapter. The cursor is created in onCreate() on the activity from a SQLite database. The problem is that querying the SQLite database can be quite slow at times with lots of data (and let's assume I've already optimized the sql query as much as possible). Because it occurs in onCreate() on the UI thread, I get ugly black screens when opening the activity, which sometimes turn into ANRs, on a slow phone like the G1. I want to load the cursor in a background and show "Loading.." on screen while doing so. I saw AsyncQueryHandler used extensively in the framework, but this seems a solution geared more towards Content Providers and not application-local SQLite databases. I then thought of trying to load the cursor in a background thread, but realize that this might be problematic, as the CursorAdapter should be instantiated in onCreate() and should take a cursor as a parameter. The latest thought I had was to instantiate an empty MatrixCursor in onCreate() and pass that to the cursor adapter, while kicking off a thread/TimerTask to query the database. Then, on database cursor load, call cursorAdapter.change Cursor to the properly filled cursor. This doesn't seem very elegant and seems quite wasteful, however.

Android :: Dynamically Add Table Row To Table Layout

Jul 8, 2010

TableLayout tl = (TableLayout) findViewById(R.id.spreadsheet);
TableRow tr = new TableRow(this);
LayoutParams lp = new LayoutParams(LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT, LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT);
tr.setLayoutParams(lp);
TextView tvLeft = new TextView(this);
tvLeft.setLayoutParams(lp);......................

R.id.spreadsheet is an xml TableLayout. I can see from debugging that the method is being accessed, but nothing is drawn to the screen. What gives? Do I need to reset the Content View somehow?

Android :: Join ContentResolver Cursor With A Database Cursor

Mar 21, 2010

I get records from the system by quering a ContentResolver. I maintain the order of the items in the database. So I want to display the items in the order taken from my database.

How do I merge these two informations?

I am looking after an alternative way now. As what I ideally want is:

Get order of contacts by a custom order held in my database (this involves joining CR with my DB cursor, and doing an order by, later seams it's not possible with CursorJoiner) but there is more, if the join is not unique I want to sort by contact's name as last measure

Which is impossible using Cursor and Joiners, because of the missing feature of order bys, also I need to return a Cursor, as I will be using the in an ExpandableList

Also this translated to TSQL it would look like

select * from contactsdata
left join category on contactsdata.catid=category.id
order by category.pos asc, contact.display_name asc

So I am looking now after an alternative. I have in mind to load in a temporary DB table all data from CR, then do the query on the temporary table where I can join tables and do order bys? How does this sound to you?

However I can't seem to get things right using mock location data and would therefore appreciate your help. The method i'm having tries to set mock location data for the gps provider and tries to later retrievie it BUT: locationManager.setTestProviderEnabled("gps", true); seems to fail because i do not get any active location provider from the location manager. When I tried using a mock location provider with addTestProvider and give it my mock location, the LocationManager returns me this mock provider with getProviders(true) but then getLastKnownLocation returns null instead of the provided mock location.

Android :: Valid Network Exists

Dec 23, 2009

I am struggling to find a way to determine if a valid network is available to an app. specifically, if there's a problem making a network connection, i would like to be determine if it's on the client (app) side, or a problem with the remote server. i happen to be attempting a URL connection (using http client) and the wide and varied possible exceptions don't seem like a reliable method. for example, when the network is down on the phone, i received "unknown host exception", which doesn't really indicate the root cause ... it's possible to get that exception with a valid network connection also. at other times i get other exceptions, such as socket exception. is there a way to ask the phone if it's network ready? the other option i thought was to ping a known good server to see if it responds ... with an IP address. kind of a heavy weight option and not foolproof.
