Android :: Things Devices Are Still Lacking

Aug 2, 2010

I'm new here and I want to start things out by asking you guys about certain things Android is lacking. As many of you know, the OS is only a year old but is rapidly evolving. I don't own an Android device yet (I currently have the HTC HD2). I'm waiting for Android to grow considerably bigger so I won't have to worry about future upgrades. Android is an awesome OS and a lot of devices carrying the OS is very good, but I feel there are some things is still lacking. In your opinions, what are the things still lacking? I can only think of one (only because my brain is dried out from work): full flash support. I guess you can also add: more memory but this is more of a micro-SD card issue instead of Android.

Android :: Sports Apps Seriously Lacking

May 11, 2010

I have noticed sports apps are lacking. ESPN, SI and Fox Sports all have apps but none of them are available on Android. I also saw a new one advertised tonight during the Lakers game called SportsNow, I checked their website and it is only for iphone. I do have Live scores installed and it is pretty good but I want more choices.

Android :: Touch Sensitivity With HTC Dream 1 Device Lacking

Apr 16, 2009

I am the developer of WordUp! This game makes heavy use of the View touch apis to detect press and drag gestures across the letter cubes. Once in a while, I'll get a complaint (unfortunately coupled with a lower star rating) related to not being able to press and drag very easily. For example: "Would be fantastic if touch sensitivity wasn't so off-I had to practically dig my finger into the screen and drag it to connect letters." As a developer, this is really frustrating as I think this is an issue with the HTC Dream 1 hardware and possibly the Android 1.1 OS. I don't think it's fair that I would get dinged for a problem which rightly falls into the court of HTC/Google. In my experience with my own dev phone, I have found that a certain amount of natural oil on your fingertip makes a big difference in how easy it is to press and drag. I know that the touch screen is based on electrical current and, as such, it makes sense that the more oil on your finger, the better "connection" your finger will make with the screen. Perhaps the aforementioned user windexes the screen on a regular basis or compulsively hand-washes? In any case, I am requesting some reasonable explanation for this as I know it's not an isolated incident.

General :: Android Device Landscape Mode Lacking

Jun 16, 2012

Since i have an android device and tried some roms for this device (HTC One S)and its dissapointing to see that landscape mode is so lacking in the space that could have been used in messaging apps.

Its quite annoying (for me atleast) to have to withdraw my keyboard whilst typing something because the one i am texting with has sent something new.

I understand that this is not a place for requests, so my question is, is there any way to make messaging look like this (this image is not real)

and not like this..

I am not looking for a specific rom that allows this, im just looking for anything that makes this possible on any rom.

Samsung Galaxy S :: Phone Lacking Characters From Key Map

Jul 28, 2010

This one mostly goes out to my fellow Swedish forum dwellers but if anyone else has a solution please chime in. My brother just got himself a Galaxy S, partly on my recommendation. He bought it from a Swedish (we presume) web shop but he seems to be lacking Swedish characters from they key map. He is not using Swype but the Samsung keyboard, he changed the phones language layout to Swedish but that wasn't enough. If you check the keyboard language, its set to "automatic" but he cannot - apart from me, set it to Swedish. This seems very strange, is it an import phone? And if so - can he add the Swedish language somehow?

HTC Incredible :: Lacking Support For Google Docs

Sep 8, 2010

Ok, so this is more of an Android thing than Inc, but the two things that I think are still sorely lacking are support for Google Docs, and some form of Google virtual drive (like DropBox). On the Docs front, I realize there's GDocs, but since Google Docs is a Google initiative, it'd be nice to have an official app. And on the storage front, it'd be great to have access to the same storage that I have with picasa, Gmail, and google docs, as a desktop accessible drive, with an android component.Anyone know of any solutions other than GDocs and DropBox to achieve these.

HTC :: Incredible Lacking In Quality Wireless Communications

Apr 26, 2010

I wonder if sometimes I don't get caught up in the hype of all the features and cool stuff and forget that first and foremost this is a phone and expect that part to be good, too. I'd love to hear opinions from those who already have received the Incredible as far as call quality and reception issues. Hoping to hear good news because I really want this! Yes, I will keep in mind that this review was only the opinion of the reviewer and it is actually nice to hear the bad with the good to help make an informed decision.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 :: Contacts Lacking Substance

Nov 13, 2010

In regards to the "CONTACTS", or rather the Phone Book, I have a question. Currently when I need to place a significant date on a Contact, I am NOT able to do so. I must switch over to the Calendar app and place the date and significance in this app. However, unless you know every contacts significant in your contact or phone book app, this is not really a fix. It is a simple band aid. Has anyone figured out a way to add a date field (or any fields for that matter), within the contact app on the x10? I know the field is possible, because the field and data is on the contact in Gmail. However, when the x10 and Gmail sync, the dates are omitted from the phone since there is NO corresponding field on it.So, how can this be fixed? Any ideas??? Or is this a 1.6 issue and it is resolved in 2.1? I guess a real quick answer would be for the folks with 2.1 to check a contact on their phone and see if it is there. Or add a NEW contact and see if the field is presented. So, who can shine the light in this dark tunnel?

HTC Droid Eris :: Email Notification Lacking Info

Jan 14, 2010

I setup both my company exchange email and a Gmail account on my new Eris. However, the notifications for a new email on the exchange account only say "1 new email (exchange active sync)", instead of specifying the subject/sender. If I receive a Gmail notification, it shows all the info in the notifications screen. Is there a setting somewhere that affects this? I'd like to be able to see the info in the notification screen without opening up the mail app. I've searched my heart out but couldn't find any solutions. A similar thread from October is here.

HTC Incredible :: Talk To Type Lacking Basic Features

May 11, 2010

I am very impressed with Talk To Type's accuracy. It's great for chat and many informal things but seems to be missing some features that would have been very easy to implement.1. Automatic capitalization - no brainer - it should capitalize obvious proper names, the word "I" and the beginning of every sentence, or at least this should be an option. 2. Automatic punctuation - it should be an option to place a period at the end of each phrase (defined by when you stop speaking) and if the beginning word was "who", "what", "where", "when", "how", etc...it should be an option to automatically enter a question mark. I get that you can speak the name of the punctuation mark, but this option would make it more useful. 3. Numbers less than ten should be spelled out (e.g. "nine" instead of "9") It's so accurate compared to many that I've tried to use in the past, yet it doesn't have these super-basic and very easily implemented features. It makes it less useful for e-mail, especially corporate e-mail, where the mail needs to not resemble a high school text message.

HTC Desire :: Camera Quality - Images Too Dark And Saturation Lacking?

Jun 2, 2010

I'm quite pleased with the camera as long as you have good light - good amount of detail and sharpness for a camera phone. But I do find that the images are often too dark and lacking in saturation, while being too contrasty. Thankfully, there is plenty of info in the camera image files that can be pulled out. There are some sample comparisons on DPNow.com here if you are interested: HTC Desire smartphone camera still photo quality? - DPNow.com Discussion Forum.

Android :: ProgressDialog Progress Bar Doing Things In The Right Order

Apr 7, 2010

I just about got this, but I have a small problem in the order of things going off.
Specifically, in my thread() I am setting up an array that is used by a Spinner. Problem is the Spinner is all set and done basically before my thread() is finished, so it sets itself up with a null array.

How do I associate the spinners ArrayAdapter with an array that is being loaded by another thread?

I've cut the code down to what I think is necessary to understand the problem, but just let me know if more is needed. The problem occurs whether or not refreshData() is called.

Along the same lines, sometimes I want to call loadData() from the menu. Directly following loadData() if I try to fire a toast on the next line this causes a forceclose, which is also because of how I'm implementing ProgressDialog.

CODE:...............

I tried changing onCreate() to the following after Jims suggestion.

Not sure if I did this right, still doesn't work:

CODE:....................

Android :: GL DEBUG_CHECK_GL_ERROR Throwing UnsupportedOperationExceptions For Things That Work

Sep 12, 2009

I turned on DEBUG_CHECK_GL_ERROR for my GLSurfaceView to try to figure out why I'm having a problem on pause/ resume/reload everything, and when I turned it on, I got an UnsupportedOperationException when calling GL11.glGenBuffers() (for creating Vertex Buffer Objects).

Why is it saying that operation is unsupported when:

1) The vertex_buffer_object extension is listed on the target device and my code checks for it before trying to use VBOs.

2) VBOs are working correctly (and really well might I add).

This is on a G1. Yes, I know the G1 is only OpenGL ES 1.0 compliant and I'm trying to use a 1.1 extension, but if the phone lists the extension, doesn't that mean I can use it? Also - the extension works! Does this mean that it works but use-at-your-own-risk, kinda like how SoundPool was in Android 1.0?

HTC Desire :: How To Put Things Onto Phone?

Jul 22, 2010

To get pictures/music/apps onto your phone from your PC and avoid having to use a USB cable, an easy method is to install dropbox from the marketplace and install on your computer. You can then easily place any file into the dropbox on your computer and it will automatically sync. A great feature of the android dropbox is that is allows instalation of .apk files as well, saving time all round. Thought I'd pass on this bit of advice here as i found it to be very useful. If your looking to register with dropbox, follow the link below.
