Android :: Targeting 1.6 - How To Get Rid Of Auto Permissions In APK?
Jan 6, 2010
I'm trying to get rid of the mentioned (READ_PHONE_STATE and WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE) auto-permissions in my signed apk, but I can't. I know it is an issue with targeting 1.5, but this isn't my case. I'm targeting >=1.6. I've checked everything: In my manifest:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" package="com.aaa.bbb"
android:versionCode="1" android:versionName="1.0.0">
<uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="4" android:targetSdkVersion="4" />
Eclipse generates the proper value in default.properties: target=android-4

I'm interested in learning Android development but if I install the latest 2.0 SDK, will I still be able to target 1.5 and 1.6 devices? (since there is only one 2.0 device right now)
Basically I'm wondering if it will tell me if I'm doing something that won't work on older versions of the OS.

I'm building an application, and need to support both 1.5 (Magic and Hero) and 1.6 (Tattoo) devices.
As Android SDK is forward compatible, it seemed logical to build against Android 1.5 SDK, and expect application to work on Tattoo. While that's true, (I tested app, it works ok), I'm now having problems on Android Market. On Tattoo, Market search by default filters android apps that doesn't have explicit support for small screens defined in AndroidManifest. Problem is that attribute exists only on Android 1.6 SDK, so Building against Android 1.5 SDK is no an option anymore. How safe is to build App agains A1.6 (with minSdkVersion="3") and run it on 1.5 devices? Is there anything else I should take care of except just change target SDK?

We are upgrading our application to add 2.0 support. I have read http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/api-levels.html and the older blog post http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2009/04/backward-compatibility.... I want to avoid using reflection if possible. I have found that if I set my minSdkVersion="3" in the application manifest but in my build path in eclipse point to the Adroid 2.0 jar file I can compile with direct calls to 2.0 code (with the relevant code to ensure they are not invoked on <2.0 devices). My question is will people with pre 2.0 devices be able to see the application in the market place in this case? What are other people using for multi-targeting different API levels with the same package.

Last week I published our first app to the Market, which is a game targeted to users in The Netherlands. Now that the G1 has been available over here for a couple of days, we have received feedback from several of our users. When I look at the developers console in the market however, the download count still shows 0.
Also on the device it is listed as <50. When looking around in the Market, I see that all applications targeted to The Netherlands are listed as having <50 downloads, even an application that received a lot of publicity. Have other developers noticed the same?

I am trying to get the intent "android.intent.action.BOOT_COMPLETED" sent only to the receiver "com.android.mms.transaction.MmsSystemEventReceiver" as this triggers the sms notification to be updated and removed if there is no longer any unread sms's. The issue I have is I need to make sure the broadcast is only sent to the class above. If it goes to other receivers the phone could end up in an unknown state or something strange. The code below does not seem to work.
Intent intent = new Intent(); intent.setAction("android.intent.action.BOOT_COMPLETED");
intent.setClassName("com.android.mms", ".transaction.MmsSystemEventReceiver");
activity.sendBroadcast(intent);
This code does work but since it goes to all receivers I have noticed some errors starting to show up in logs etc.
Intent intent = new Intent();
intent.setAction("android.intent.action.BOOT_COMPLETED");
activity.sendBroadcast(intent);

I need to target apps for a specific carrier. Any tips on how to do this? I've seen <uses-library> for market filtering, but looking for something else.

I read here: http://www.androidguys.com/2009/10/11/developers-can-now-target-by-carrier-in-android-market/ that it can be done if you go to the Android Market, and go to your app, then go to Publishing Options -> Locations, but I don't see anything to select a specific carrier there, only specific countries. Is this something that Google changed? Can this still be done, or is it done automatically? Can't the carrier be detected from the device?

I'm beginning with Android development. I'm aware that there is a lot of Android devices still on OS 1.5 or 1.6 so I'm thinking about require API level 3 as minimum to support them. What will I miss from 2.2? Which are the most important features I will miss targeting Android API 3 (OS 1.5) instead of most recent API?

The permissions say that you must agree to allow them to delete files from your storage including your SD card; must agree to allow them to extract any information from your phone, etc. In other words they can do any thing they want with your phone and the data in it.
Is there any way to not grant these permissions and still get updates?

I'm looking for an alarm clock app with one very specific feature - allow me to set the alarm tone to automatically stop after X seconds, then start again at the next snooze interval, and play for another X seconds.
Sure it seems every alarm app out there allows me to set Snooze intervals and stuff, but with my waking up habit, I don't like to physically have to touch the phone to get it to shut up until the next snooze interval. I like to lay in bed and let the alarm go for like 3-4 snooze intervals before I finally wake up.
I've tried Alarm Clock PlusV2, Alarm Clock Xtreme, Quick Alarm. None of them seem to have this.

I installed it on my Droid and when I open the list and long press on an app it gives me the option to Auto-Kill. I assume this means I won't have to kill this app any longer so I select this option but I find that I keep having to kill the same apps over and over again. What's the point of Auto-Kill or what am I doing wrong? There are lots of programs (most I didn't even install) that run all the time and I'm having battery issues so I don't have battery to waste on programs I'm not using and will probably never use.

Is there a way to tell Android to do the following when setting the background image for a TextView?
1. Scale the image so that it's just large enough to fill the the entire viewing area without any black borders, while still maintaining its aspect ratio. This might require clipping once the image is actually displayed, but that's OK (read on).
2. Then, center the image in the viewing area, both horizontally and vertically.
3. Finally, clip the image to the size of the viewing area, without any further rescaling.
I'm guessing that this kind of image processing is not automatically done via any of Android's facilities, and that I'll have to do it myself. If this is a correct assumption, could someone point me to some documentation or some examples which could explain how I can accomplish this? I'm guessing that I'll have to subclass my TextView and implement my own onDraw() method, but could someone confirm or deny that assumption?

Are these the same? I have searched the forum, and can't seem to find the answer. I don't find any "auto brightness" setting in the settings menu on the Hero. I have auto backlight unchecked. What exactly does this do? Is this the screen dimming? Sorry, I am confused. Uh oh! Must be a senior moment!
While I am showing off photos I have on my phone, the screen dims...how do I keep this from happening?
Also, relating to photos..when I go to "Albums", I have 4 folders listed...Camera Shots, All Photos, etc. When I take a pictures with the phone camera, they seems to be in both folders. Why?

My wife and I have been having the same problem. We keep the auto-brightness option checked, but every so often we find that it goes back to manual mode--and it always reverts the phone back to full brightness setting. Any ideas why this would happen?

I'm trying to limit my mobile data usage with out jumping through hoops.
I'm looking for a widget, that with one click of a button, it can restrict background data, disable auto-sync and enable mobile data, and when pressed again, enable WiFi, disable background restriction and enable auto-sync.
This function, no matter how trivial, would save time and effort.
Is there anything like this out there? Would something like this require root?

I've been following the "Is there a way to request permissions from a user as you need them?" thread with a lot of interest, but even if someone is convinced to make the Android permissions system better, it doesn't do anything for right now.
So, I thought I'd start a thread for coming up with alternative ways to reduce the permissions your app needs.
My app absolutely needs internet access (it's useless without it), and it uses Google Maps extensively (it's the main activity), so I have the following :
CODE:.................
I want to be able to know if I have a network connection, hence the ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE. I also try to use GPS hence the "ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION", and if GPS is not available I try to find the user's location using something else hence "ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION" and of couse the "INTERNET" permission. I also use the "My Location' feature of Google Maps.
So... the question is : Is there a robust way to use Google Maps, and be able to send requests to my server without all those permissions (in a user friendly way) ?
I'm also experimenting with C2DM, so I have the following:
CODE:................
If I want to use C2DM, it seems I am stuck with those... Anybody know
Now... I also want to use the camera (optional) and vibrate (optional but most users will want it) so I have to add :
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.CAMERA" /> <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.VIBRATE" />
Total 10 lines of permissions in the manifest.... AND this is AFTER removing 4 other permissions that a small percentage of users would have found very handy, AND not adding a few other features because of the permissions bloat they would have added
CALL_PHONE READ_CONTACTS GET_ACCOUNTS SEND_SMS
So... given all of this, is there a way to reduce the permissions I need any more than I already have? AND why do I need a total of 8 permissions just to ask my server for the data they want, and try to keep them current using C2DM? Surely those permissions could be reduced somehow.

I'm currently reading the specs about Android's Security system and something is not clear on my mind... Can somebody explain me ? About the Permissions, it is possible to set four levels (Normal, Dangerous, Signature and SignatureOrSystem) The documentation is here : http://developer.android.com/reference/android/R.styleable.html#Andro...About the "Dangerous" level, it's written : "For example, any dangerous permissions requested by an application may be displayed to the user and require confirmation before proceeding, or some other approach may be taken to avoid the user automatically allowing the use of such facilities." What does "Some other approach may be taken..." means ? How does that work ? Is there any example?

So one of the cool things about Froyo is being able to check off Enable Automatic Update for market apps. So i have that checked off for like 80+% of my 80+ apps (that took a while to do let me tell you). Now i have had three apps have updates available since i checked off the box, yet they never actually automatically updated. I waited, hours, still never updated. Is there a setting i need to modify? Do i need to tell it what time of day to do it? Anyone else noticing this? I only really want it in apps that i don't care about reading the new features. But it is annoying that i have it enabled and it does nothing.

When I run any application from Eclipse on my real G1 device (a retail one, this is not a dev phone), I am granted the READ_PHONE_STATE and WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE even if i don't declare them in the AndroidManisfest.xml. I actually can call TelephonyManager.getDeviceID () to retrieve the IMEI and I see these permissions in Settings -> Applications. I don't have this behavior in the emulator. Does anyone have the same "problem"?

I have some well-debugged XML-RPC interfaces on a site that work wonderfully from both PHP and from JAVA. Using Eclipse I am able to write Java apps using either the Redstone or Apache XML-RPC libraries quite simply. These test cases using the 2 libraries utilize JavaSE-1.6 (jre6) libraries as well as one of the 2 xml-rpc libs referenced above.
My problem is making this work on Android. I have added ADT to my Eclipse setup and easily executed the HelloWorld test using a virtual 1.6 or 2.1 Android device - no problems. Whenever I go into the Build Path in Eclipse and add the external jars for either the apache or redstone XML-RPC libs my console goes wacky with a ton of the following:
Ignoring InnerClasses attribute for an anonymous inner class that doesn't come with an associated EnclosingMethod attribute. (This class was probably produced by a broken compiler.)
If I push ahead and debug the code when it actually ships off the XML request I get an exception out of the XML library on permissions of some sort. Why does this only happen in an "Android" project. These libraries seem to have no problem running in Non-Android standard java configs. Once we proof the ability to talk to our server we can proceed down the road of actually porting our app to Android.

This seems to be a bit of a vexed issue: see
http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa...
Like the person who started that thread, I need to get a unique ID for a device, without using scary permissions for TelephonyManager. I've tried
id = android.provider.Settings.Secure.getString(getContentResolver(), android.provider.Settings.Secure.ANDROID_ID);
but that just produces "android_id" on my phone. I'm using a Nexus One and Android 2.1.

I created an application that starts a service. This service is expected to run in background. This service has to access the Location. I am currently unable to do so I have given permission to my Manifest file I think the issue is that the application has the permission, but the Service does not ! What happens is that the service keeps running even if the application is stopped .Does the Service need special / different permissions ? How do I assign permissions to Service ( my service class extends : Service).

The application source is available here: http://code.google.com/p/workregistrationwidget-android/ Can anyone have a look and tell me what I do wrong or is it just a bug?
