Android :: Speaker At Back
Mar 23, 2010
I'm just about to get a Desire when it comes out (very soon now) but I wonder about the speaker at the back. Can anyone with a device with the speaker at the back tell me if this is any good? Do you have to place the device on a surface up side down when playing MP3's through the laud speaker or hands free?

I'm sure the engineers who build these phones are quite brilliant individuals, and certainly, at least one of them has figured out by now that, "Hey, if we put the speaker on the back of the phone, the sound is going to be muffled when the phone rings!"So I'm just curious if there is some logistical/technical reason why this is done? I figure it would be much better design-wise to put the speaker on the front, or maybe even on the bottom. Other than not being able to see the screen in direct sunlight, this is the only real gripe I have about the phone thus far. Also, do you guys lay the phone face down when not using it, assuming you'd otherwise sleep right through the phone ringing when sitting on its back?

The speaker on the back has a support beneath it (where the speaker(s) would be), except in one area. Off center to the right there is a hollow area where it can be dented, which I found out the hard way. I just happened to look at it and notice this defect. Having never dropped mine, I have no idea what could have caused this other than something pressing on it in my pocket. Upon further inspection I found out that this area is in fact pliable, due to the lack of support behind it.Will be dropping by VZW on monday. Since I'm within my 30 days until jan. 3rd, I hope they replace it for me. It would really suck to have to pay my $89 deductible (or whatever it is) just for this, but I can't be showing off my Droid with a dented speaker

This is my first android device and i'm loving it... but one thing that irks me is the use, or lack thereof, of the back button.
As I am navigating menus and options in the Settings, I cannot simply go back one menu using the back key. For example, if I go to Settings->Battery Manager->Battery Profile Options and want to go back to the Settings screen, I cannot.
Pushing the back button does nothing and I can only go back to the Settings menu by going Home, then re-entering.
Another quirk regarding the back button is when reading emails. Using a regular email account such as Hotmail, I cannot simply read an email and go back to the inbox using the button.
It makes navigating the phone very tedious.

I call WebView.clearHistory(), but I am still able to go back after doing so. I want to reuse a WebView, but I don't want the back button to allow the user to go back further than the current "session" of using the WebView. Anybody know what is the best way to handle this? I thought for sure that clearHistory() would do it.

In my android application i have a video list screen,a buffering screen and a videoplayer screen.
As soon as the user clicks an item from videolist screen ,he is navigated to buffering screen and then to videoplayer.
In the buffering screen i am using Async task and doing the loading process in on background process.
Now my issue is like the user if has selested a video then gets navigated to buffering screen. But if the user clicks back when he is in buffering screen then initially he is getting navigated to videolist screen but immediately after that again he is navigated to videoplayer screen.
What i would like to have is either the back button should be made disable in buffering or should prevent the player tostart if back is clicked.

I have a ADP1 that just developed a problem. The ear speaker volume is very low. My app does not adjust any volume, but I suspect that some other application is fiddling with it. Or, the unit is defective. (I've had it over a month, though.) First, is there a way to set the default volume of the phone? I couldn't find it. I've rebooted and even removed the battery to see if the default volume would come back. But, no luck. Notes: * The volume is turned all the way up. * Speaker volume is fine. * Bluetooth headset volume is fine

I recently mail-ordered a USB-RCA Connector, because I wanted to listen to the music on my G1 through my stereo speakers and the stereo only has an RCA input for auxiliary devices. After I connected the cord and switched my input to AUX, nothing comes through the stereo's speakers: music still plays from the G1's puny speaker. How can I fix it so that the music will play through the stereo speakers?

It's about android.media.MediaRecorder. I want to implement a feature to record the conversation, both voice from speaker and microphone. But I tried on G1 phone, the Media Recorder only could record the voice from microphone. I looked into the Android doc, there are only two audio sources, MIC and DEFAULT (either to record microphone). So these are my questions: 1. whether can I implement it or not? 2. will more audio sources be supported? If so, which release or when?

I am able play a media using MediaPlayer. The media played via the ear piece. But how can I play the media with speaker phone? I have tried: AudioManager audio Manager = (AudioManager) mActivity.getSystemService(Context.AUDIO_SERVICE); audio Manager.setSpeakerphoneOn(true); but that does not work. And I have added this to my Manifest file <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS" /> Can someone please tell me what am i missing?

In my app, I use the MediaPlayer, the sound comes from the speaker. I just want to know how to play the music in the earpiece. The dev guide says that "You can play back the audio data only to the standard output device; currently, that is the mobile device speaker or Bluetooth headset. You cannot play sound files in the conversation audio." But actually I have seen some apps that can play sound in the channel which conversation audio comes from.
Did I miss anything?

Is there any way to tell if an app is currently using the speaker (playing music or generating other sounds)? Specifically, I'd like to detect if an alarm clock is going off (not only the one that comes with the system, but any alarm clock), but I'll settle for simply knowing if any sounds are coming out of the speaker.

Is there a way in Android to force output through the phone speaker, even if a headphone is plugged into the jack? I know there has to be a way because when you are talking on the phone, you can put someone on speaker phone, even if there is headphones plugged into the jack.

My fiance has already gone through 2 Droid eris well he is on his second one. He had to bring the first one back due to his external speaker sounded blown, and now the replacement one he got is doing the same thing. We were wondering if this is a popular problem and if the next replacement he gets Saturday is going to do the same thing all over again. He never uses the external speaker only for the message alerts. We are both stumped onto why the same thing would happen to both phones. I have the same phone and mine hasnt done it I do have mine on vibrate a lot more then his.

When phone is on silent or vibrate mode it should also mute the speaker from playing music or multimedia. An app to link the speaker output to the vibrate mode of phone would be great! Silent mode = muted speaker.
Uses: When listening to music with your headphones on, and you get a call, the music stops. You unplug your headphones to take the call. When the call ends, the music instantly begins to play again, except this time it comes blasting out of your speakers since your headphones were unplugged!
It would be nice to not have to have a separate control. I use a widget to turn my phone on silent mode. So using this same widget to turn the vibrate on and mute speaker would be sweet. I don't think it would be as easy as just muting the multimedia volume because that also controls the headphone volume. So it would have to be speaker output control.

I'm finding that I'm using the back button A LOT whether browsing the web or just navigating the OS. It kind of sucks because the buttons on the droid x are well, really small, and sometimes hard to press because they are so narrow and flimsy feeling. And depending on how you are holding the phone, it could be a good bit of distance for your thumb to travel or I'm finding myself having to reposition the phone in my hands just to reach the back button, which you seem to need very frequently.
Anyone know of any kind of back 'swipe' implementation ? Like some software you can install that makes it if you swipe left to right on maybe the top bar it goes back?

Instead of trying to grab the notification bar and swiping it down, simply start ABOVE the screen and swipe down. Fast or slow makes no difference.
You can swipe it back up, or simply hit the back button.
