I'm a programmer looking to play in the mobile world. The application I'd like to play with would support my musical hobbies. I suspect a mobile phone with a music player could easily be programmed to support a classical musicians practice sessions. Access to media player APIs without the need to open external apps or do clunky things with files.Adequate access to playback API to create specific notes and beat patterns. As a hobby application, this should not require expensive tooling.I can switch to a new phone to use the application. Bonus points for something that easily ports to a netbook.I will admit I new to the world of sexy phones. I currently use an obsolete voice device with text messaging. I won't revealing my current flavor of programming because learning a new platform is just fine.

I'm nearing the end of a small project to develop an android app. As a first time developer, and a one-man band, I am anticipating selling it at a low price point. I have followed some of the discussions on the Android blog and elsewhere about licensing and obfuscation, and I am in two minds. Part of me thinks that I have spent a long time on the development, so why should I make it easy for people to pirate the app? The other part thinks that it could be fairly time consuming to implement licensing and obfuscation, stop people using the app from non-google supported countries and wondering how much of an issue it is anyway for a small app.
However, if you google even a small app and add .apk at the end the number of "warez" downloads is fairly shocking if it's true. Just wondering whether anyone has any opinions either way, about the impact of piracy on a small developer. I'm not expecting to make my fortune with this app, and would aim for I guess 1000 downloads or so. I may even release an ad-supported version some way down the line depending on how sales held up, which would solve most of the problem I guess.
I am trying to create small simple application on emulator. I want to create button and display with some click event. I am not able to use findViewById method with R.id.abc. It always gives error as R.id cannot be resolved.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm building a game with graphic assets in hdpi resolutions (hence I put the files in drawable-hdpi directory). I don't want to have a corresponding mdpi resolution of the images, and I will code everything in 240-dpi based pixel coordinates.
Is it possible to still allow mdpi and ldpi devices to run the application, by automatically scaling the graphics from the hdpi version? Optimize for high-dpi devices only but still support (small- and) medium-dpi screens.
What is the best approach to managing a small SQLite database private to the application? Open (getWritableDatabase)in OnStart and close in OnStop in each Activity?Open in OnCreate and keep open til the user quits the app (where would you put close?) Open, do work and close as soon as possible each time it is needed?

View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a simple way to change the contents of a dialog box in Android without having to re-create the dialog box? I know that Activity.onCreateDialog() is only called once when the dialog first needs to be created, and this is where you initially set the dialog's contents. I need to change the dialog's contents later, so I'm wondering what is the proper way to do this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThere is an application called QVOD that downloads videos to a local cache on the Android device, and for many devices it works just fine. For many devices however. If the device is running ICS, frequently the playback features stuttering audio. I have found where QVOD saves the video files, although it separates them into several pieces, making it difficult to just browse to that directory and use an alternative player, such as MXPlayer. I have found that if you cat the files together into one RMV file, you can then watch it with another application and it plays just fine. That means the audio codec built into QVOD is almost certainly the problem.
What I'd like to do is build a simple graphical app that allows you to view the videos in that folder and automatically cat the files together so you can either save them or view them in another player. Having some background in programming, I understand the process flow of this is very simple. Unfortunately, I do not know how to program in java. Ideally, it would be great if the makers of QVOD addressed the problem directly, but having spoken with them on QQ, it doesn't seem they have any interest in doing so.
I don't see this program taking more than a hundred lines or so, and would be a great contribution to the Android community. The application will SURELY get a lot of attention, because it will not only allow those with audio problems to enjoy their videos, but it will allow those that aren't having problems viewing to at least save the files and also have a CHOICE of what application to view them in.
Say my app has a widget and I use a configuration screen to do initial app widget setup and set a few preferences.
I want the user to be able to change those settings by simply going into my app's settings screen and clicking an intent preference to open up the same options the user was given when the app was created.
Can I use the same activity as the configuration activity? Will I have to handle it differently? How does the existing widget get updated with the new settings?
How can I get this to work?
I trying to understand how a new process is being created based on AndroidManifest.xml, also looking for the possibility of creating/ forking a new Java process/new DVM instance at runtime.
I could find that using Runtime.exec one can issue system commands or launch native applications, but this is not what I am looking for, I am looking for creating an equivalent java process just as the parent java process.
Can I launch an installed android application at runtime from another android application? Whats the way for doing this?
I am developing a ToDo reminder type of app for android. on creation of a new reminder an alarm and vibrator scheduler is created with a toast. This works on intents and broadcasts and is pretty straight forward stuff with putextras using the reminder id from the db. My problem is, if some one restart the phone, i guess all the scheduled alarm and vibrator tasks for the reminder will be killed. Once the phone restart again how to recreate the scheduler tasks.

I have an Android application with a main activity that is the tabhost. I'm adding multiple tabs to the tabhost with an intent to several activities.
My problem is that these activities are not created (onCreate is not called) until I click on the tab. This is a problem because I need to register broadcastreceivers: there may be broadcasts that are sent -before- a particular tab is opened.
I tried to work around this by:
Setting my receivers as static and registering from somewhere else. This is not possible because I need to call into methods.
Calling into tabHost.setCurrentTabByTag(the_tag) and then switching back to my root tab. This only works sometimes and this is a very ugly solution imo.
Not using activities but just using views instead. Also not a very elegant solution because it turns my tabHost activity into one huge master class doing all kinds of unrelated things.
A question that might be a bit general/basic knowledge, but for me it has a quite direct background, so i'll form it as an example:
I have an activity "entry" showing something equivalent of a blogpost, that might have comments. You can click somewhere to open a "comments" activity. But in this activity there are links back to entries, creating a nice line of activities.
If I call the "entry" activity (with an intent) on a link to show this entry, am I re-using the old activity, or am I creating an endless string of entry, comment, entry, comment activities (pretty cost- ineffective that would be).
I have a TabActivity. Within this activity (in the onCreate method) I create a TabHost and a TabSpec and do a tabSpectSearch.setContent(intenSearch); The Indent is created using intentSearch = new Intent().setClass(this, MyActivity.class);
As far as I already found out the class MyActivity is instantiated when I select the tab, to which it is connected. Is there a way from my TabActivity to force the creation of all activities (all tabs) at once?
I use the following code to create a folder "mymir" and a file ".nomedia" (in the mymir-folder) on the sdcard of an android unit. However, somehow it fails with the exception that the folder the ".nomedia"-file is to be placed in dosn't exist.

If I enable permission for my Activity(android.permission.INTERNET), my Activity constructor itself not called and logcat shows following info. View 21 Replies View RelatedI would like to display a an access dialog activity at the start of my application.
In other words, I would like to start another activity (in dialog theme) as soon as my Main Activity is loaded. But, I know that I can not start an activity while another is creating.
I tried to start this activity in the onResume() method : I can see the new activity called, but the Main activity do not respond after closing the new activity.
Is there a solution to do this, without using delayed intent ? May i use a special flag for my intent ? I did not find, in the activity cycle, a way to detect the end of activity loading.
How do most of you wise developers create a YouTube video for your Android Apps, if at all.?
Do you:
Hire some teenagers to do something creative and viral? Use a tool to capture the screen as a video and then add caption and voiceover later? Set up a home camcorder on a mini tripod, aimed at your Android handset on the table top? Don't bother with the video since it's too much trouble?
Especially when looking at full page views, the text is just too small to read. Solution?
1. Press Menu in browser.
2. Press More.
3. Press Settings.
From there, you'll see Text size as your first option and then simply switch it from "Normal" to Large or Huge. I choose "Large" because "Huge" sometimes makes the text a bit weird because it resizes all of the text and any text in a very small box tends to just stick out. "Large" works just fine. Now the text, even in full page views, is readable.
