Android :: Settings Screen Layout Style
Dec 24, 2009
I am creating a new settings screen for my app and want to keep the look and feel similar to that of the standard applications. I have seen many 3rd party apps also follow this style (Twidroid for example) and would like to know how best to go about creating this look?
Is there a "template" or Activity I can use or is it a case of constructing it from a table layout or similar?

I need to do aa Factory Reset of one of my rooted android devices. I have the Home Screen pages set up just the way I want them to be and am trying to avoid having to reconstruct them once the Factory Reset has been done. I'm assuming that all of theat data (wallpaper, layout, app widgets page and position location is stored somewhere.
So, where do I find it so that I can make a copy of it and then restore it once I've rooted the phone again.

I've got a text style defined in styles.xml. I'm trying to reference it from a layout. When I reference from the layout, it causes an exception upon inflation. If I use the style from java code, it works fine. Setting the individual styles on the TextView works fine too:

I created my style in styles.xml, lets say MyStyle. I can use it in any layout file by style="@style/MyStyle". Also my generated R class have R.style.MyStyle, my question is if I can use it at runtime to "setStyle" - unfortunately View doesn't have such a method. If not what is R.style.MyStyle used for? (I already know that custom themes IDs are also in R.style and can be used to setTheme, but MyStyle is not a theme).

When I include <style> elements from /res/values/styles.xml the Layout designer/preview within Eclipse doesn't update with these styles, but shows as it would be without any styles. Can anyone confirm this issue? If so, Is there a way I can fix this myself easily? If not, where's the appropriate place to sumbit a bug report?

Since Android supports styles and it's good practice to use them (similar to CSS), I made a new style and applied it to 3 buttons.
The Layout builder in Eclipse did not register the changes and either broke (showed nothing) or didn't apply styles at all.
After running the app in the emulator, styles are correctly applied.
So is there something I'm missing or the Android plugin doesn't support styles?

I am new in android, i am having few problem in layout alignment. I have divide the screen into three layout,as header, body and footer. I am giving the height dynamically for the three layout in java file, so i need to give 12% of height to header and footer layout, and the remaining 75% i need to assign height to body layout. For that i have made the calculation as follow
first i am getting the height and width for the screen. With the help of the screen height i am getting the 12.5% height for header and footer layout
WindowManager w = getWindowManager(); Display d = w.getDefaultDisplay(); int totalwidth_screen = d.getWidth(); int totalheight_screen = d.getHeight();..................

How can i create layout style similar to settings in Andriod emulator? Example, in andriod T mobile, you can see, under settings, list of settings like Wireless control Call settings Sound & display Security & location etc are displayed ine by line accordingly with with brief description of each title provided with down arrows.
I would like to create to use in my application for list of items. But i cant find any tutorials similar to that display. I only found out like list view on the whole black background.
I just want to display like the settings display in emulator?

Is there any documentation that explains how to create buttons in the style of the new market app on the top of the screen? I'm not sure if they're actually buttons or tabs, but I want to recreate that button style in my app (flat gradient buttons that dynamically fill the entire height/width depending on orientation).

Any View have a constructor public View (Context context, AttributeSet attrs, int defStyle) which called when View declared with a style attribute So, if I have some class inherited from View class, I can access to declared attributes (like "android:layout_width" or "android:background") via AttributeSet attrs in a constructor. But when I move attributes to style I cannot see attributes and values exists in a style - I want to read items declared in style but I have only styleID in defStyle parameter. Is there some way to read style Items using styleID?

I am using an activity with the dialog theme set, and I want it to be full screen. I tried all sorts of things, even going through the WindowManager to expand the window to full width and height manually, but nothing works. Apparently, a dialog window (or an activity with the dialog theme) will only expand according to its contents, but even that doesn't always work. For instance, I show a progress bar circle which has width and height set to FILL_PARENT (so does its layout container), but still, the dialog wraps around the much smaller progress bar instead of filling the screen. There must be a way of displaying something small inside a dialog window but have it expand to full screen size without its content resizing as well?

I've developed a fairly extensive application. The problem began when I started programming...my spinners are the solid gray rectangular style (unlike the newer style with the triangle in the lower right corner). When I started developing this app several months ago, I couldn't figure out why my spinners were different (after many hours) so I just ignored it. I'm at the point now of polishing my program and want the newer spinner style. So, I'm beating my head against the wall again. I went to my Android SDK Mananger in Eclipse and updated my Android SDK Tools, Platform-tools, and Build-tools. I have the lastest versions of all of these (22.3 and 19.0.1). When I create a new project, the newer spinner style appears. However, none of my older projects changed. They still have the same old gray, rectangular type spinners. I tried using a "android format" line command I found while Googling, but no luck with that either.I'm using ADT Bundle with build v22.2.1-833290 on a Mac OSX Mavericks.

I'm creating my own View class, and defining custom xml attributes with a attrs.xml. As long as I provide each attribute manually, there is no problem, but
code:...................
The android:text is properly set in my instance, but the borderDrawable is not. I guess this has something to do with namespaces, because inside the styles.xml, the name="mypack:borderDrawable" is not handled by the XML parser's namespace facility, because its inside an attribute value. So "mypack" is in no way connected to "http://some.weird.url.com/seems/not/to/ matter" and adding it via xmlns:mypack... to the stylefile would not help, I guess. In the same file, "android:text" is somehow recognized, even though "android" is AFAIK only a ns-defintion for [url], which is also not declared in that file.
So what is the proper way to set a custom attribute in a style?

I thought I have understood the XML layout of Android, but it seems that I haven't. I want to have four ImageViews on one screen, to view four images at the same time.
It should look like this, where A to D represents the image views:
DDDAAA
DDDAAA
BBBCCC
BBBCCC
How can I do that? I tried it this way, but it's not working. The Eclipse Editor seems not to be very good for this either. Is there a better one to create those layouts?

In my Android app I have 2 layouts, one for portrait and one for landscape.
In both layouts I have a TextView that the user can change by clicking on, by default it reads 'ON'
If the user presses it then it changes to 'OFF' All well and good.
However if it's set to OFF and the screen is rotated the text view resets to ON. How can I stop this from happening?
