View 3 RepliesI have an activity that contains several user editable items (an EditText field, RatingBar, etc). I'd like to prompt the user if the back/home button is pressed and changes have been made that have not yet been saved. After reading through the android documentation, it seems like this piece of code should go in the onPause method. I've tried putting an AlertDialog in the onPause however the dialog gets shown and then immediately tears down because nothing is there to block the pause from completing.

View 4 Replies View RelatedIs there a way for end users to disable 2G data services (e.g. make the phone just a phone)?Or disable the GSM function as well (say, for a device used on a hiking trip as a GPS tracker, where there is no coverage)?
Is there enough control in the SDK to pursue writing an app with a control screen like: [x] Enable Voice (GSM) Enable 2G Data / Enable 3G Data (uses more battery than 2G) [ ] Enable Data When Roaming (may result in extra charges) [x] Enable WiFi [x] Enable WiFi even if device is sleeping [x] Enable Bluetooth [x] Enable GPS [ ] Airplane mode (disable all radios)
I have an application that allows the user to "drill-down" into data. At each level of data the user can choose a Tableview item or a Listview item. This will result in a startActivity() call for display of new data.
I can get back to the top (Parent activity) by using the Back button, which can take a while. Is there a way to "POP" back to the Parent activity and dismiss all previously allocated activities, and not have to go back through all the activities previously created?
I am working on some sample programs, where i have to take the value from the user and store it in the database. I have used DroidDraw to create the XML code for UI.For now, I have just started with a textbox. So, I have to take the value from this textbox and store it in a database. I am using SQlite browser to create tables. I read in some forums, that one way of doing this.
1. Copy the db file in the asset folder of the android project and use the AssetManager class. But i am not able to figure out how to use the asset manager class here. Or if I could get some simpler suggestions on how to store the value from user into the database, it would be great.
I am trying to design a sqlite database that will store notes. Each of these notes will have common fields like title, due date, details, priority, and completed.
In addition though, I would like to add data for more specialized notes like price for shopping list items and author/publisher data for books.
I also want to have a few general purpose fields that users can fill with whatever text data they want. How can I design my database table in this case?
I could just have a field for each piece of data for every note, but that would waste a lot of fields and I'd like to have other options and suggestions.
Friend sent me through text some songs to save as ringtones but cant seem to figure this out. It says I saved them but when I go to sounds then ringtones they are not there.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm writing an application wherein users will sometimes make orders through it. I want to give users the option to save their billing info (name, address, etc.) so that it can be quickly restored later if they want to make another order. The user will enter a password to secure the data. Obviously I can't just put this as a file on the device, as anyone can root/find the data. Is there a built-in Android method for storing secure data that is locked with a password? If not, what is a good place to start for storing this data securely using Java?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIf a user uninstalls an app from his phone, which data is explicitly deleted? I know that preferences are deleted. What about files on the sd card and about databases created by this app? If the data on the sd card is not deleted how can I avoid cluttering the users phone if I write larger amounts of data, like images on the sd card?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI completely revamped an app. Tested it for a while on my device and emulator. The app worked fine. However when I updated the app through the Android market, my users experienced crashes.Since there is no way to properly debug this procedure I asume the crash is caused by old data which is not being removed from the device (probably from the onsavedstate bundle?!).Is there a way to do a "clean/total" reinstall without having the user to do it manually?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Windows to develop android apps and want to know where user preference data is located. It says at /data/data/package/...., but where can I actually see the preference file? Via eclipse or command line tools?

I use the SoftTrace beta program a lot. It's great but has no way that I can find to download the data it tracks to a PC.
I want to access phone internal memory to store some data, similar to that of sdcard. but the problem is that the data written by one application is not accessed by other applications. because of uid mismatches.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 2 EditText widgets ,one takes username and other takes password.When the user enters username in First EditText,the text should be validated (It should accept only characters no digits) when the focus is on the first EditText. How to achieve this. It needs to display error message using setError() method in EditText when the user enters wrong data.

I am using the getExternalFilesDir(null) method to save to the SD card. Saving and reading from the SD card is fine. The problem I am having is that every time I edit anything in Eclipse and rerun the app the data on the SD card is deleted. I know that saving to the directory returned by getExternalFilesDir(null) will allow the files there to be deleted when my app is uninstalled but is there a way to turn it off for just app updating? Is this only cause I am doing it from Eclipse and it won't delete the data when the app is updated from the market?
View 3 Replies View RelatedCome one, come all -- let's gather and act shocked, shall we? It's no secret that Google's Android Market is far easier to penetrate than Apple's App Store, which is most definitely a double-edged sword. On one hand, you aren't stuck waiting a lifetime for Apple to approve a perfectly sound app; on the other, you may end up accidentally downloading some Nazi themes that scar you for life. A curious team of scientists from Intel Labs, Penn State and Duke University recently utilized a so-called TaintDroid extension in order to log and monitor the actions of 30 Android apps -- 30 that were picked from the 358 most popular. Their findings? That half of their sample (15, if you're rusty in the math department) shared location information and / or other unique identifiers (IMEI numbers, phone numbers, SIM numbers, etc.) with advertisers. Making matters worse, those 15 didn't actually inform end-users that data was being shared, and some of 'em beamed out information while applications were dormant. Unfortunately for us all, the researchers didn't bother to rat out the 15 evil apps mentioned here, so good luck resting easy knowing that your library of popular apps could be spying on you right now.
Update: A Google spokesperson pinged up with an official response to the study, and you can peek it after the break.Update 2: Looks as if the full study (PDF) has been outed, with the 30 total apps named. Here they are: The Weather Channel, Cestos, Solitaire, Movies, Babble, Manga Browser, Bump, Wertago, Antivirus, ABC - Animals, Traffic Jam, Hearts, Blackjack, Horoscope, 3001 Wisdom Quotes Lite, Yellow Pages, Dastelefonbuch, Astrid, BBC News Live Stream, Ringtones, Layer, Knocking, Barcode Scanner, Coupons, Trapster, Spongebob Slide, ProBasketBall, MySpace, ixMAT, and Evernote.

CODE:...............
We've been developing an Android app at work for a few months now and recently acquired Droid Incredibles (API ver. 8) to replace our HTC Dev Phones (API ver. 4).
DANG are these some sweet new toys, but unsurprisingly, they've got a few quirks...
1) It's normal for my user to let the program run for long periods without any input, but he'd still need the display to work the entire time. Can anybody suggest a function call or setting or something that will prevent the Incredible's screen from dimming while my application is running??
2) On the Dev phone, I was able to copy my application's database file (thousands of uses, that) onto the SD card's root directory and fly. I could view the directory on my PC via USB; when I released the SD card from the PC, my application was perfectly happy with it and obediently read from and wrote to the database; and I didn't have to remove the SD card, ever. That doesn't seem to be the case with the newer, better phone, though. My application seems to be reading my start up parameters properly, but all attempts to save data in my database aren't working so well unless I'm just doing something wrong. Can anybody point me to documentation specifically geared toward the Incredible?
Not possible with Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4. The only way is to use Titanium Backup, and better than that, Nandroid Backup. You can as well extract data from a Nandroid backup with Titanium Backup.
I have a Nexus S and I wonder if, with the option Settings -> Accounts and sync -> Background data & Auto-sync & Manage accounts (sync is on) the settings and savegames are automatically stored "on the cloud", let it be my Google account or similar, because I don't have a rooted phone and don't want to do that to preserve warranty.
So, the apps for wich I want to save data are:
Air Penguin
Angry Birds
Angry Birds Rio
Angry Birds Seasons
ArmySniper
Clouds & Sheep
Dolphin Browser HD
eBay
EGGGZ
Flight Director
Jewellust
Jewellust Xmas
Labyrinth
MultiGrain
X Construct
My app is made of two activities, A and B. I'm considering this sequence of steps: Activity A is started. A launches B [A is paused, B is running]. B launches a map intent [A and B are both paused now]. Now the user is using the maps application and the system decides it needs more memory. Can the system kill only one of my activities for memory, or will it always kill all activities in a "process" in this situation?
Both activities share some static data like:
class Data {
public static String mName;
public void save() {
// write to file: mName;...................
It would be nice if StackOverflow had a section where we could post tutorials like mine so that I can answer literally hundreds of questions that have been asked here with a single blow. See... every day I read questions about how to pass complex objects between activities, how to save state so that your app can resume after orientation change, how to update listviews when the data changes, etc, etc. Here is the second part of a tutorial series I posted on my blog... I hope that you actually read it... because I haven't seen any examples like it anywhere... and it has changed how I think about developing for Android across the board. The question is... is there a downside or negative affect of developing like this?
Beyond Smart Lists - How Observable Singletons change the game. Please read through both of these tutorials carefully... I will answer any questions about it here that I can... I really want to know what you think about this and if it might solve issues for you. NOTE TO MODERATORS: there are no advertisements of any kind on my blog.. so don't just close this because you think I am spamming somehow... I am not going to duplicate my post here.
I want to save the data on the web server. I have data in XML format and I know the URL String. Please tell me how can I send the request and handle the response.
