Android :: RuntimeException When Trying To Use Android.app.Application
Feb 23, 2010
I'm trying to use a custom class (be.myname.rssreader.util.Global) extending android.app.Application, but when I try to use its accessors, I get the following exception:
CODE:...........
Before you ask, yes, it's in my manifest, as follows:
<application android:name=".util.Global" android:icon="@drawable/icon"android:label="@string/app_name" android:debuggable="true">
The code where the exception is thrown is this:
global.setService(new FeedService(getApplicationContext()));
It's placed in the onCreate of my main Activity, immdiately after the calls to super.onCreate and setContentView.

my app has widgets that have an ImageView and a TextView. On the onUpdate() method of the WidgetProvider, I put a Bitmap inside the ImageView this way:
CODE:..................
setColor() method is this:
CODE:..........
The problem is that sometimes the widget throws a RuntimeException because somebody has recycled the Bitmap, and I don't know what to do.

I'm trying to add ScoreNinja, the global high score system, to my Android game, and it works fine when I load it on my phone, but when I release it into the wild, I got crash reports saying: java.lang.RuntimeException: Can't create handler inside thread that has not called Looper.prepare()
Here is part of the call stack:
android.os.Handler.<init>(Handler.java:121)
android.app.Dialog.<init>(Dialog.java:99)
android.app.AlertDialog.<init>(AlertDialog.java:65)
android.app.AlertDialog.<init>(AlertDialog.java:61)....
I thought the main thread had prepare() called automatically, and if not, why would it work fine for me but not anyone else?

This code works fine if I move the findViewById call in to the Activity. Any hints as to why it doesn't work from inside the LearningView class? I've tried moving the TextView inside the com.example.LearningView tag but no joy. I'd prefer to get the TextView from within the SurfaceView subclass as I feel it's more logical to treat the TV as a "child" of the SV.
This is a contrived example I wrote to figure out the problem in a larger application, but the gist of it is the same, and the stack trace is basically the same.
For what it is worth, the findViewById call is returning null, which obviously threw NullPointerExceptions in some attempts to fix this.
As you can probably gather from my attempts I'm flying blind on this one.
Learning.java:
CODE:..........
main.xml:
CODE:..............
Stack trace:

I get the following error in logcat: java.lang.RuntimeException: Binary XML file line #26: You must supply a layout_height attribute. Can you please tell me which xml file that I am missing? And it said 'binary xml', does it mean it is actually line 26 in my file? or it is line 26 in the file after it compiles to be a binary xml file?..........

I wrote an android app and so far it works perfect except for on one phone. It is the exact phone that I have with 2.2 on both phones and mine works perfect. The other phone is getting force close all the time but only when opening an activity that queries my image DB and tries to show a gallery. Every activity crashes in the same place, the viewimages. At first I thought it was the intent that was doing it but one of the activitys does not have the intent, it opens the images below the gallery. This works on the emulator, on my moto droid and on a few other different droids. Here is the code for the gallery and my bitmap decoder.
The error is below that.
CODE:..............
Here is the error

I'm calling Debug.startMethodTracing("fnord") and I'm getting a java.lang.RuntimeException: file open failed message. It looks like I'm supposed to have the android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission set. But how do you set that permission when you're debugging through Eclipse? Aren't permissions normally set at install time (which doesn't happen in a normal way when you're debugging)?

I found this example where they used PowerMock and EasyMock to stub/mock the Menu and MenuItem classes for android. I have been trying to do something similar with PowerMock and Mockito with the Activity class.
I understand that a lot of the methods are final and that in the Android.jar they all just throw RuntimeException("Stub!").
I also understand that this test isn't complete but I just wanting to see if it is possible to mock the android Activity class.
But given that PowerMock allows you to mock classes with final methods shouldn't this code work?
CODE:............
I would think that the RuntimeException would no longer occur and "Title" would be returned but it still throws the exception.
I have tried all sorts of different things like doReturn("Title").when(mockActivity).getTitle(); and suppress(constructor(Activity.class));

I want to add a big feature to an application i am developping, but as this feature interest few people and is quite independant from the main part, I would like to put that in a seperate "plugin" application.Does anyone knows any design patterns, snippets, "reference" examples about such design?In particular that separate plugin application should be able to access some tables in the main application DB. Is it possible to do that without broadcast receiver? - the main application uses a TabActivity: is it possible that a the tabactivity instanciates an Intent Activity that is part of the plugin? - does the plugin can access main application preferences (not sure this would be necessary, but better to anticipate the question!) is it possible from the plugin to access main applications ressources?At least the 2 first points are mandatory for me.

I would like to know if it is possible to launch my application whenever a new entry is written to phone call log (i.e. out-going, in-coming or missed call). I wrote an application to manage the call log entries as per user preferences by listening to the publication of android.intent.action.PHONE_STATE events. My application is working fine as long as its process is running. However if the user has stopped my application with a task-killer application, then the log entries can not be managed as my app itself was not running. I need a way to make sure that my application is launched in the background if it is not already running when the android.intent.action.PHONE_STATE occurs. Or is it possible to launch my application as a service that always runs?

I guess that Android won't let people to do this, because they think they have perfect handle for the task/applications. However, I really need to do this in my case.
I have an activity A acting as the entry point of my application. In that activity, it reads the preference and decided which activity to start, say B or C. After that, it finishes itself. So, activity A never appears to the users.
My application stores things on sdcard, and reads from it constantly. So, when the sdcard is unmounted, I need to display a message to the user that the sdcard is unavailable, instead of opening B or C. I set a check in A to display that message when sdcard is unavilable. When that message is displayed, A will not try to start B or C.
Things works perfectly if user only enter my application from application launcher. However, I found that user can also enter my application by long pressing home and choose it from the recent application list, if he has opened it recently. When user does that, it skips A and goes directly to B or C. I don't have the check in both of them, so exception is thrown while I am trying to access sdcard, and force close dialog pops up.
I can simply move my check to both B and C to fix this problem. But in the future, the number of activities started from A will increase. If there are 6 of them, I'll need to copy this check to 6 places. Needless to say, this looks very ugly, and is a maintenance nightmare.
So, the best fix should be removing my application from recent application list when the sdcard is uunmounted. However, I can't find how to do this. Even killing the process or use ActivityManager.restartPackage, it still appears in the list. Can anyone tell me how to remove it from the list?

Is there any way to hide an application icon from Android applications list ? The application should be downloaded from Market and opened some GUI for configuring my application. I don't want to see any icon of my application in applications list. User should not be able to run it.
By the way I know some way:
remove this line from manifest
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
But it is not worked for me, because the GUI is not shown.

I have published application and now I'm making update to it. I changed applications Data structure and moved all files under /Android/ data/<package_name>/files/ folder.All files that are in that folder will be automatically removed when application is uninstalled.I want those files to be removed when application is uninstalled but not when it's UPDATED. I don't want users to lose all their data after every update. I don't know how to test it (without publishing new release). So will those files be deleted when user updates my application?
