I was wondering if it is possible to start the gps receiver on the phone if the current activity is not a mapactivity. I am displaying a listview and when I start the gps I get the last location found correctly, however the gps indicator never appears on top of the phone's display even if I wait or restart this activity. The location of the gps stays the some. The gps indicator appears on top only if I enter an activity where a mapview is displayed. If I wait in the map activity for a little while then If I go back to my other activity and request the location there, then the location is updated with the last value that it had before exiting the map view. It never gets updated If I move around after that, though..

AudioRecord can record audio data in pcm format in realtime, but there is no audio-encoder who can encode pcm data to amr format. may be third-party java code can do this, but the performance may be very low.MediaRecorder just record audio data to disk. not realtime. It seems that this is a real miss-impossible?

in reading thru the forums i notice that most users, when discussing their battery, are using some monitor which reveals percentage of battery juice remaining. i find the stock monitor in the status bar to be insufficient. what apps are you guys using that give you the best reflection of battery %/time remaining, indicate what's been using the battery, and most importantly do not eat up battery like a hog and make it not worth using?

Mobile Nanny monitoring software now available in the Android Market | Android Central But i dont need logs, or a $49 annual bill. Id like the app to track;
Calls (how many calls i made per day/week/month)
TXT (how many SMS/MMS i send per day/week/month)
APPs (if possible, how many apps were used per day/week/month)
Emails (how many emails sent/rec'd over day/week/month)
etc
Im a numbers freak, id love to have this info to study how often i use my phone, where the usage is, and compare it to other people if possible.

Does anyone know if there is an application that will send command lines to a PC? I would like to use this to either both launch programs and send other commands (such as changing the audio output on my PC). I am able to do this by creating shortcuts to the commands, then using a remote program (like premotedroid) to control the mouse and click the shortcuts, but it would be really cool if the phone could just send the command directly to the PC.

We are starting the e-mail intent of the user's choice (createChooser) and sending a zip file. This zip file is created right before the email sends, but we need to make sure the file is there until the email actually gets sent. Once the e-mail is sent, it would be nice to have this file deleted instead of sitting around eating SD card storage. Is this possible? (it can't be done in onActivityResult, e-mail intents don't actually finish, they cancel and thread the sending in a background service...so when onActivityResult gets called the e-mail might not have sent yet). Any ideas?

In an effort to keep my battery from draining from dodgy apps, yesterday I installed a CPU and battery monitor called "Mini Info". After getting my DHD and going on an app installing rampage my battery life dropped to about 6 hours, and I think it was the monitor!
So I've un-installed I'm looking for some system tools that won't sap my battery life.
Can anyone suggest to me:
Battery Monitor
CPU monitor (that displays what processes are killing my CPU)
Task killer (using ATK)
A widget I can use to easily turn bluetooth/wireless/GPS etc that includes 3G as well...
Also... someone mentioned before an app that changes your settings based on your location (looks at location with GPS). Can anyone tell me what this is called and if it saves more battery than it uses?

For a Computer Science Information Warfare class a few years ago I wrote a python script that ran on libpcap promiscuous packet capture files to parse out facebook chat traffic (earlang tuples passed in clear text), and thought an interesting project would be to port the program to Android.
I would like to rewrite it in Java but can't find any information about packet capturing directly on the handset.

I supposed it would need a separate battery and a mini-usb cable but it would succeed especially it combined with a "video phone" app.

Its time that we start demanding the ability to "build" our own phones and be able to select both the hardware and software that would be on the phone.Custom orders can be done for personal computers/laptops and even Nike sneakers, so why not smartphones? There are a lot of phones that I like, but there are always a few things about the phones that put me off.Be it a physical keyboard that makes the phone too large, or some a Custom UI put on top of android that makes updates to the latest build few and far in between.I'm sure many of us would pay a little bit more to have a phone made to our exact specifications.Perhaps you like the Droid Incredible but want a physical keyboard, and don't want HTC's Sense on it.How hard would it really be for the manufacture to develop an incredible with a physical keyboard and not add their UI to the phone?

Can anyone tell me why smartphones are great for everything except being a phone.I struggled with 2 HTC Evos for about a month.Really poor call quality, earpiece was crap(tinny, blown speaker sound) finally returned it and went back to my Samsung Exclaim for the time being.Wow, what a difference. My old Exclaim is crystal clear, at ALL VOLUMES.Told by radioschack employee to just turn the Evo down when it distorts he was right but then you couldn't hear, especially with any background noise.I will probably try the Samsung Epic in a few weeks. My wife has the Samsung Intercept and compared to the EVO earpiece is 120% better. Why don't they put quality earpieces in smartphones?

Computers and laptops won't exist, only smartphones. We will have desktop and laptop DOCKING stations that we can plug our phones into. Those stations will have no computing or storage or networking capabilities. They will only contain a keyboard, a mouse or touch pad, and a viewing monitor. They will simply receive input from the user and send it to the phone, and display or sound the output.Such docking stations will exist at home, school, work, airports and other public places.

We want to build a smartphone app which uses geolocation, etc. and target the most important smartphones. Which OS would you support for a b2c application? I found a german statistic here: http://de.statista.com/statistik/daten/studie/150842/umfrage/prognostizierte-marktanteile-der-smartphone-betriebssysteme-in-2013/ which forecasts the smartphone usage for 2013. To summarize it lists the following OS, ordered by priority:
Symbian, Android, Blackberry (RIM), Windows Mobile, iPhone
Would you agree with this priority or should we start with the classical: iPhone/Android combo?

Lets say I have 2 mobile phones which are 50 meters away from each other and I would like to send a very small packet of data from mobile-A to mobile-B, without using any communication to cellular tower. To make it simpler, I would like to build an app which implements a Peer to Peer connection for 2 mobiles in the same radius (in the same area). Is this feasible using the technology of smartphones these days?

I use the K-9 email app for some of my email accounts that aren't gmail. I have it working the way I want save only one problem. Right now when I get a mail it flashes the subject line or the first line of the email across my notification bar at the top of my screen. This is especially troubling when I'm in the car and I have my droid mounted in the car dock. I don't necessarily like my passengers in the car to be able to read the email message I just got as their heads whip to the droid when it says ..... DROID!
Handcent app doesn't have this problem. I can set each individual contact to a privacy mode where so I only get notified, but no part of the text appears in the notification bar. Is there a similar "privacy" setting for K-9 that I'm missing? If I can't get this figured out soon I'm going to have to try another email app.
