Android : Preventing Screen Timeout In Google Listen?
Feb 22, 2010
I have a Nexus One and while using Google Listen to listen to podcasts my screen lock will go into effect. Unfortunately, when this happens, the podcast audio pauses. I can set the screen timeout to a maximum of 30 minutes but some of the podcasts are longer than that.
Is there anyway to have Listen suspend the screen timeout while it is running?

I have an Android (1.5) application which needs to be constantly running when a button is pressed. So, when a button is pressed I would like the phone to remain on and not want the screen or CPU to time-out.
When another button is pressed I would like the phone to be back to normal and time-out as per user settings.

I was using Google Navigation this morning to direct me to somewhere and the screen kept timing out and locking. This was happening every 10 minutes or so.
Surley this is not meant to happen on a NAVIGATION application where you would expect the screen to stay active all the time! how can i prevent this from happening?

is there a way to set screen timeouts to specific apps? For instance, when running navigation, can the screen time out be set to never timeout just for that app? I only want the screen to stay lite for certain apps.

I use Google hosted apps with my own domain for e-mail, calendar, chat, etc. and I use the e-mail address from that with my main Google account as well. So, both my Google account and hosted apps account use the same address. I had no problem setting up my account on my phone when I got it Friday, but I've been running into a few issues. First off, every time I try to buy an app in the Market, it asks me to set up a Google account to associate it with, even though I already have. Also, when I try to use Google Listen, it asks the same thing. Is there a way around this, or will I have to create a separate Google/GMail account?

Is it possible to prevent the screen from locking? Right now, I have to wake the phone, then unlock the screen. Waste of time.
Also, it is a minimum five key press to make a call. Wake > Unlock > Dialer > Favorites > Person. Is it possible to have one-touch calling from the home screen?

I have searched around for an answer to these two issues, but haven't been able to find anything. After doing the manual upgrade to 2.1 OTA, most everything is fine. However, Google Voice and Google Listen are having issues. Google Voice is giving me a Force Close message every time I receive a text message in Hand cent SMS (to my non-GV number). I don't actually use GV on my voice all that often. Google Listen seems to have lost all trace of any of my pod casts, including new ones that have come in since the update. Every episode on every pod cast has, just under the title: "Error (sd card/com.goggle.android.apps.listen/downloads/e55bee71)" The string of letters and numbers on each one is different. I used Astor File Manager to look in this folder and each of those files is not there. Some of these folders were downloaded a month ago (I'm a little slow in getting to some pod casts) and some I have listened to already pre update but still getting the error now. Some that I have listened to are not giving the error. And any that were downloaded after the update are giving the error.

I have the screen timeout set to 1 min which works fine until I use the phone. When using the phone the screen times out (and locks) in about 5 seconds. This is a real pain when using voicemail etc and you need to interact with the keypad.

I was messaging around today and found where to shut of the screen while charging, but I wanted to turn it back on and can't find where it is? Also before the update I could have sworn there was an option on the screen timeout to set it to never. Now I don't have that option.

You should probably send e-mail to the developer through the address shown in the market app. For the most part, Google's Android applications that appear on Market are written just like other third party applications, and are best dealt with that way.

I've given Google Listen a go as my podcast app, but it seems buggy and not very intuitive to use. So I'd like to try something different. I'd like sync with Google Reader tho not essential, also need an app that has the option to download over wifi only.

How do you take the actual MP3 files off the nexus one (or any android device) when you download them from a podcast manager like Google listen? When I download podcast on my computer, they usually are in C:documents and settings usermy documentsmy music. So I can take the MP3 files and move them to wherever I want. How do I find these files on my phone after having downloaded them through Google listen ?

I'm a BIG fan of Google Listen, until one of their updates just started f**king up everything! I posted my concern on their discussion group (Discussions - listen-discuss | Google Groups), but I'm not sure that official channel is actually answering ANY questions. The replies are more users saying they have the same problem.
Can I get support (or answers) here or should I just stick to their discussion group?
Here are some of my concerns:
I can't fast forward or rewind anymore. If I try to move the timeline the podcast starts over.
A lot of the time I get an error along the line that it can't play the file. So; it no longer plays while streaming. I have to wait until I get a full download.
When I use my bluetooth headset to start/stop a song, it messes with the Music app. I can't disable this option without disabling it for Music.
I'm running their latest version (v1.1.3b) on my Motoroloa Droid FRG22D. I think I saw these issues when I had Android 2.1.

I am coming from iPod Touch's native app, so that is what I have to compare it to. What I am looking for is an app that can subscribe to my podcasts, download them automatically as new episodes become available (or notify me if one is available to stream), delete them when listened to (if downloaded and not streamed) and remember my playback position if I have to do something else for a bit. Which app is better for these things?
Also, does either have a feature where it will only download the latest episodes when in WiFi range only, to save on bandwidth usage? And, is there an option on either to press a single button to have it go see if there are any new episodes of my subscribed podcasts (like the "refresh" in iTunes)?

I am seeing a very annoying problem with Google Listen on Android (I think this behavior has started since the most recent update a couple of weeks back, but I am not sure)I am using the Nexus One (Android v 2.1)
1. Start Google Listen, using the wired headset.
2. Start listening to some podcast
3. Press the play/pause button from the headset
4. With the old version of Listen, the podcast would be paused.
When you pressed the button again, the podcast playback would resume. This was very nice. However, now - when I press play/pause from the headset the music player starts up. Sometimes, the podcast stops when music player starts up, sometimes it continues to play. Sometimes I get weird error messages on listen. This is really annoying.

I love the new feature in Listen that allows it to sync with Reader to manage podcast subscriptions...or at least I love the idea of it. Since updating Listen and using it for many days now, I have seen nothing regarding my podcast subscriptions popping up in my Reader account. How can I fix this? Is there something I'm missing?

I would like to keep the screen timeout set to the default 30 seconds to save battery while the phone is not charging. However, I'd like to increase that to at least several minutes while the phone is charging. I don't want the screen to be always on it just doesn't seem like the best thing for the life of the phone. Could be wrong, it just feels that way.Is there any setting or app that would allow this?

I can see on OMAP zoom2 platform, the moment screen timeout happens my application is getting terminated. I have a Google map based LBS application which is running on Zoom. I have implemented the interfaces given in gps.h to libhardware_legacy/gps.cpp .
GPS application talks to android framework and Framework talks to libhardware to get the GPS info. Now I can see that the moment screen timeout happens and the display goes off, my application killed. Actually from the framework the stop interface (hgps_stop() ) gets called on screen timeout.
I am wondring why this is happening, as I am not sending any stop request form my GPS application to the libhardware.
Is it something related to Android power manager, that android Power manager does not know about my application is running?

I've implemented a Service in my android app that starts a timer (using the standard java.util.Timer and java.util.TimerTask mechanism) to do some processing in the background on a pre-defined interval.
CODE:...
The service is started / stopped by my application like this.
CODE:..........................
As long as the phone is active (no screen-timeout occured), the service is running fine, and the Timer is performing its job at the defined interval. Even when I quit the application (using the back button), the timer remains active.
However, as soon as the phone goes into timeout, the timer task is no longer running stable. If I leave the phone in timeout for several hours (at night), I would see that on random occasions (sometimes a several hours interval) the timer kicked in.
Also, when the phone is activated again, all timer runs that have been queued are suddenly executed in one shot before resuming back to the normal interval.
What would be the right way of implementing a timer that continues to run properly, even after the phone has gone into timeout. Should I resort to using the PowerManager and WAKE_LOCKS (as described here http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/os/PowerManager.html), or is there another mechanism ?

I finally had a chance to try the Google Maps turn by turn navigation, and i love it, but i got one problem.
To save on battery, i keep my phone display timeout to 2 minutes. The problem im running into is when the screen times out, it kills the navi and i gotta restart it....very annoying and sucks if a turn is coming up
Does anyone know a way to keep the screen from timing out while either plugged in, or in the Maps app?
