Android :: Passing Data With Pending Intent
Jun 28, 2010
I would like to create some home screen app widgets that are entry points into an application. I can put a button in the app widget that uses setOnClickPendingIntent to start the activity. The problem occurs when I want to have two of these app widgets that are entry points to different parts of the activity. I need to be able to pass data into the activity that will distinguish these. Since both app widgets use a Pending Intent that starts the same activity, the two Pending Intents are shared and I can't reliably set extras for the corresponding intents.

I've started using an AlarmManager for some tasks i'm doing and while setting up the pendingIntent to be broadcast I noticed there is no receiverPermission option. Can anyone tell me is it possible to set the receiver permission on a pendingIntent?

I have a alarm thing going on in my app and it launches a notification that then when pressed launched an activity.The problem is that when I create more than one alarm then the activity launched from the notification gets the same extras as the first one. I think the problem is either with the intent i put in the pending intent or in the pending intent itself. I think I might need to put a flag on one of these but I dont know which one.The "details" extra is the same to every the next time a notification happens instead of having the different value.Until I set the intents I am sure that the correct value goes to the "details" so its a problem of getting the first intent everytime i press any notification. How can I make it to launch the correct intents?

I created a widget that when clicked activates a PendingIntent.The problem is when I have more than one widget on the screen only the latest one will start the PendingIntent.I have read some about a unique request code, but not figured this out.Any ideas how I can have multiple widgets and the PendingIntents work for each?

I have one WidgetProvider but expect the user to have multiple instances of the widget on the home screen. When the user clicks on the widget, an intent is fired to start an activity A passing a String extra (which is specific to that instance of the app widget). Everything works fine unless the activity is already running, in which case the activity is shown in its previous state (and so the intent extra data is ignored). I've tried using various Intent flags (like FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK) but they don't seem to help.

I've read many posts on the same topic and tried all the given solutions without getting the result I want.The program should start an intent with extras from a notification.The problem is that when a new notification is shown, the extras added to the intent is the same as in the first notification. I've triend with differnt flags in both the intent and the pending intent, without result. What am I getting wrong?If i just launch the same activity (and the same extras) with a button, everything works as it's supposed to.

A few days ago I was struggling to find a way to use custom intents for my alarms. Although I got clear answer that I have to customize the Intents based on some unique ID eg. setAction() still have some problems.This can happen more than once for a contact. And when the second message is generated, the notification is raised well (message is fine there) but the intent when the user actions the notification it uses old data, so previous message is passed and not the brand new message.So someway the intent is caching and reusing previous extras. How can I make it unique per contact and per action?

In my application i have created pending intent which calls another activity (after 20mins of alarm off) with the help of alarm manger. It should happen each time for each new pending intent or when I call that activity. But when i create one pending intent and after few mins again create new pending intent ,then the last one overlap the other previous pending intents and start specified activity only for ones for the last pending intent.I want that each time i create any pending intent it should start specified activity after 20 mins of it's alarm off time.How it can be done ?

I have four groups in a listview each with four url's I want to load in a webView. When the user select a url to goto I set a value like so;
if (position == 0) webb = webb +2;
{
Intent intent = new Intent(this, official.class);
startActivity(intent);
}
I then carryout the intent to move to the webView class where I have given each URL a value like so;
if (webb == 2) mWebView.loadUrl("http://yahoo.com");
if (webb == 3) mWebView.loadUrl("http://www.bbc.co.uk");
But the screen stays blank, if I state the value inside the official.class it works. How can I get this value to pass to another class based on the selection the user makes from the listview.

I have been trying to get "getExtra" to work but without success, I have a listview with 4 choices which launch a webpage within a webView class, when the user selects the option lets say option 3 I want to pass the value of 3 to the webView class so that it will load the correct webpage, at the moment I get no errors, but the app force closes when I select the option, could this be due to having to announce this in the manifest? can somebody help with where I am going wrong. This is my intent
public void onListItemClick(ListView l, View v, int position, long id) {
if (position == 0) {
Intent intent = new Intent(this, official.class);
intent.putExtra("weburl", 3);
startActivity(intent);}
This is the official class:
public class official extends Activity {
int number = getIntent().getIntExtra("weburl", 0);
@Override
public boolean onKeyDown(int keyCode, KeyEvent event) {
if ((keyCode == KeyEvent.KEYCODE_BACK) && mWebView.canGoBack()) {
mWebView.goBack();
return true;
} return super.onKeyDown(keyCode, event);
} WebView mWebView;
@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.browser1);
mWebView = (WebView) findViewById(R.id.webview);
mWebView.getSettings().setJavaScriptEnabled(true);
if (number == 2) mWebView.loadUrl("http://bcafc.livewwware.co.uk");
if (number == 3) mWebView.loadUrl("http://www.bbc.co.uk");
mWebView.setWebViewClient(new HelloWebViewClient());

I am creating a database driven app for managing people. I am showing a list of people with each name in a TextView. When a TextView is clicked, I launch a new intent to show the detail for the person. My question: What's the best practices for passing the id of the person to the new intent? The TextView is displaying the name of the person, so how do I know the id of the person? Once I know the id, I know how to pass it to the new intent, but I don't know what the best way to associate the id of the person to the TextView. Is there a best practice for this?

I have an application, which sets an alarm using AlarmManager, which starts another Activity when it goes off. The AlarmManager takes a PendingIntent and spawns a BroadcastReceiver class when the specified time comes. I'm wondering whether there is any way that I can pass arguments to this BroadcastReceiver through the Intent object which goes into PendingIntent?I'd like to be able to retrieve arg1 in the BroadcastReceiver's onReceive(Context, Intent) method. I figured that the local variable my_intent would be the second parameter passed on to onReceive by the PendingIntent, but apparently that's not quite right. Is it possible to pass parameters between an Activity and a BroadcastReceiver in this fashion (using Intent.putExtra()) or should I use a ContentProvider instead?

I would like to pass a considerable sized amount of data (~1500 bytes) between two applications in Android where performance and resource allocation is a priority. The data is basically key-value pairs. The rate at which it needs to be passed from one application to another can vary from a trickle to ~50 packets within a second. I figure I can either:
Wrap all the data inside a bundle, and pass the bundle via an Intent from one application to another. I worry about the performance implications of allocating and de-allocating all that memory to store the bundles.
Write all the data to a SQLite database and provide it to the other application via a content provider. Here I worry about the performance implications of writing all that data to disk, and then having to read it back from disk when it is requested. So, which is the lesser of two evils?

Let's say I have a background service that performs several tasks. As it completes task A, it posts notification A with a certain intent and some extra data that indicates viewing result of A. As it completes task B, it posts notification B with a certain intent and some extra data that indicates viewing result of B. As it completes task C, it posts notification C with a certain intent and some extra data that indicates viewing result of C. At the end, the notification area has three notifications. Each one has the same intent, except for one of the extra data fields. I would expect that each one would load my activity with different extra data. They don't. When onNewIntent is called, each has the extra data field set to C. I have rooted out any possible aliasing and checked the data as it is placed into a notification. It seems to allow only one set of data per package. Is what I am attempting not possible? Has anyone accomplished what I am attempting? For example, have you had a service download several large files, and then had notifications that would open each of those. Code...

I've always been under the assumption that you can't pass arrays between activities with extras. But I was just going through the Bundle class docs and saw putStringArray(String key, String[] value) and public String[] getStringArray (String key). Are these new? They both say since API lvl 1, but I don't remember being able to pass arrays.

I am experiencing a problem where when the android device wake up from sleep, the Activity would take forever to get redrawn(and have to terminate it most of the time). I am not sure why, but when I comment out the code below where it retrieves an object from the database based on id stored in the bundle, the problem goes away.
Not sure why the db transaction is causing an issue.
secondly, is it better to store the object in bundle instead of storing its id and retrieving it from db in onCreate?

So I'm getting really confused on how to do this whole thing and I was hoping someone could break it down for me a little bit.I have a service that should always be running, and at certain times it needs to alert the user that a task is to be completed(probably through a notification bar icon). When the user accepts the task, the service needs to look into the local database, construct some non primitive objects, and give them to the activity that it just started.I have looked all over and gotten very confused as to a proper approach so I have a few questions to help me wrap my head around it.If an activity creates a local SQLite database can the service and activities of that application access that same database later?Does the service and activity need to be in the same or separate packages? I would think no but for some reason I remember seeing something about this elsewhere.
How would I do the data transmission from the service to the activity? I was thinking a content provider but it seems like there should be an easier way for the service to just hand off the data. Similar to an Intent but for non primitives.

In Handler, we can pass some data from a background thread to the UI thread like this:
private void someBackgroundThreadOperation() {
final String data = "hello";
handler.post(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
Log.d(TAG, "Message from bg thread: " + data);
}
}
}
If we use the above, we cannot then use Handler.removeCallbacks(Runnable r), because we won't have references to any of the anonymous runnables we created above. We could create a single Runnable instance, and post that to the handler, but it won't allow us to pass any data through:.............

Suppose I want to include data right in an intent, e.g. pass a number or string in the intent data field.What should the uri look like? Something like "data:3.14159"?Or just don't include the scheme at all, "3.14159"? In fact, is there a list of standard schemes anywhere?

I was just wondering if it is possible to give the intent a set of data, instead of just one. A particular scenario where this could be applicable would be a music application.You select a list of songs, and pass all these data (file path) to the Music Player's application.Another scenario: You need to plot more than one address on the Google Maps. You launch the application with a set of data for the intent.

I'd like to send an sms message. If the text is too long, I split it into multiple messages. I'm trying to put some extra info into the "sent" intent to know which part has been sent, and when all the parts are complete: The message is sent, and I catch the intent when each part is sent - but the intent always has the same data in it. For example, "partIndex" is always zero, even though for the second message, it should be one. Seems like the same intent just keeps getting thrown to my broadcast receiver. What's the right way to do this?
