Android :: Pass Enumerators To An Activity Constructor From An Intent?

May 14, 2010

I have an activity that when started needs access to two different ArrayLists. Both Lists are different Objects I have created myself.

Basically I need a way to pass these objects to the activity from an Intent. I can use addExtras() but this requires a Parceable compatible class. I could make my classes to be passed serializable but as I understand this slows down the program.

What are my options?

Can I pass an Enum?

As an an aside: is there a way to pass parameters to an Activity Constructor from an Intent?

Android :: What Is The Significance Of Context In Various Constructor Of Intent Class When Starting An Activity

I had come across a code snippet which calls for an activity without referring to any context. Before, i was considering that context is used to tell about the calling component. But as i came see that another component can be called without any reference to context, it makes me wonder what purpose it might be serving. please put some light on it.

Here is the code which calls for an activity without referring to 'context'

Android :: How To Pass An Object To An Activity Via Intent.putExtra?

Aug 7, 2009

I am developing an app that connects to a server. For that connection I created a class Client that maintains info about the connection . My app consists of several Activities and each of that Activity needs access to the Client object to communicate to the server. 1) Can I put somewhere the Client object so that all Acitvities have an access to it? 2) If not I would probably need to pass the object to each Activity via Intent.putExtra(). But putExtra doesn't accept Object as an argument. It only accepts several types like int, long, String etc. So how can I pass an object to another Activity?

Android :: Pass Intent Via StartActivity() To A Running Activity

Android :: Class Derived From Intent Service Must Have Default Constructor

May 8, 2009

I'm posting this to share the lessons I learned while working with IntentService. IntentService has a single constructor that takes a string argument "name". The documentation has no description of what name is used for. In looking at the sources, I found that its only use is in naming the worker thread for the IntentService. This thread is named IntentService [name].

I initially implemented the constructor of the derived class to also take a String argument and passed it along to the derived class. This is wrong. This will cause the startService() call to generated a java.lang.InstantiationException in the application containing the service i.e. you don't get the exception in the application calling startService(). A clue to the actual problem is a little further up in the logs:"newInstance failed: no <init>()"

The derived class must have a Default constructor and that constructor must call super() passing a string for the name component of the worker thread name.
public class MyIntentService extends IntentService {
public MyIntentService() { super("MyIntentService");
} @Override
protected void onHandleIntent(Intent intent) {
// Handle events on worker thread here }

Android :: Activity Constructor Vs OnCreate

Jul 21, 2010

I understand that Android Activities have specific lifecycles and that onCreate should be overridden and used for initialization, but what exactly happens in the constructor? Are there any cases when you could/should override the Activity constructor as well, or should you never touch it?

I'm assuming that the constructor should never be used because references to Activities aren't cleaned up entirely (thus hampering the garbage collector) and that onDestroy is there for that purpose. Is this correct?

Android :: Pass Image To New Intent

Nov 19, 2009

I've got a problem My app show a first layout like: Gridview1 (3 images in 1 row) ImageView1 (1 image) Gridview2 (3 images in 1 row) ImgaeView2 (1 image) Gridview3 (3 images in 1 row) ImgaeView3 (1 image) When you clik over an image it will be open full screen in a second layout, The problem was that I don't know how to pass the image to the new intent. Now I've the next code:

public AdapterView.OnItemClickListener pulsarImagen = new AdapterView.OnItemClickListener() { public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> arg0, View arg1, int arg2,long arg3) { Intent intent = new Intent(GridViewer.this , GalleryViewer.class); intent.putExtra("id", arg0.getItemIdAtPosition (arg2)); startActivity(intent); //finish(); } };

But the ItemID is always 0. Before I've only one gridview and then I passed the item's position. But now I've 3 different gridviews and I don't know if the position of item selecte it's from gridview 1,2 or 3. I supose that the great solutin it will be to pass the id resource (image) but I don't know how to pass it. Can you help me?

Android :: Exclude Own Activity From Activity.startActivity - Intent

Oct 17, 2010

My app works with pictures. It can take multiple pictures as an input, process them, and send them again to another app.

As a consequence, my main Activity has declared an intent filter on ACTION_SEND_MULTIPLE for image/* mimetypes and can result in issuing a new Intent with the same action and data type using Activity.startActivity(Intent).

Is there a way to exclude my own activity from the list of apps that is displayed to the user after the startActivity() call ?

Android :: Pass Data Through New Activity?

Jun 29, 2010

In my Android app,I start a new activity with startActivityForResult(). I get the result in onActivityResult() perfectly. My problem is that there is a small bit of data that I know before I start the activity and I need that value to be available in onActivityResult(), too. I tried attaching it to my intent as an extra, but it wasn't attached to the intent that is available when the activity returns the result. I made it work by storing the data in a global variable, but I really don't like that approach. Is there a better, right way to pass data through an activity (instead of just to it)?

Android : Pass Image To Another Activity?

Aug 23, 2010

I figured out how to pass a String value between activites thanks to this site, however I'm having trouble passing an image. What I'm trying to to is have a user click a button that opens the gallery and allows selecting of a picture. Then I have another button that opens another activity that displays an ImageView. I want to be able to have that ImageView's image be the chosen one from the previous activity.

Here is the class that has the button I'm clicking to open the gallery and retrieve the chosen image: code...

What I'm not sure about is in the OnActivityResult if I should pass the selectedImage or the chosenimage in the b.putExtra("bitmap", selectedimage); line. I tried both but I didn't see an image on the second activity. Also I wasn't sure in the PreviewScreen class if I'm setting the imageview correctly. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Android :: How To Set / Pass Values From One Screen (activity) To Another?

Sep 30, 2010

How do you set/pass values from one screen (activity) to another? What I have in the R.layout.main view labeled Calculator contains the code for doing calculations. The main.xml contains the layout (view) of the main screen. I have created an options menu which has another screen which shows you setup (R.layout.setup). The dialogsetup.xml contains the layout (view) for it.

When you press the menu button, you get the options menu. If you select "Setup", then it will display the setup screen. Now what I need to do is take the values from the setup screen (radio button and text values) and place them in the main screen so that when you exit the setup screen and go back to the main screen, you can take those values and use them in your main code.
