Android :: OpenGL ES Games - Best Performance?
Dec 2, 2009
I'm experienced with openGL but not Android. I just started. I have some spinning cubes running on a Droid and I'm barely getting 30FPS. Should I be using GLSurfaceView to get the best performance or is there a better way?

So I'm doing some simple 2D stuff with OpenGL on Android and found the performance to be very, very poor. To give you an example, I made an app with a full screen LSurfaceView. I loaded a 512x1024 texture (containing a 480x854 image), set up an orthogonal 2D matrix, and set it to draw a 480x854 pixel quad with that texture, using vertex and texture arrays. Lighting, dither, blending, etc. is disabled.
I would expect this to run at 60fps without problem, but that simple operation already drags the frame drawing time to 19ms/frame. If I add some more small textured quads around the screen, the drawing time goes up to 22/24ms. If I enable blending it balloons to 28/30ms. This is testing on a Motorola Milestone, running 2.0.1. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong or is it just a common problem in Android?

Thank to previous replies, and with a major inspiration from http://insanitydesign.com/wp/projects/nehe-android-ports/ , i started to build a simple Tile Generator for my simple 2D zelda-like game project.I can now generate a map with the same textured tile, using 2 for(..) imbricated iterations to draw horizontal and vertical tiles, and got some basic DPAD key input listeners to scroll over the x and y axis.but now im running into my first performance problems, just with one texture and one model. When trying to build a 10x10 map, scrolling is fine and smooth. When trying with 50x50, things get worse, and with a 100x100, its way unacceptable. Is there a way only to tell OpenGL to render the 'visible' part of my mapset and ignore the hidden tiles? im a totally new to this.

What tutorials and libraries are available which can help beginners to develop 2D and 3D games on Android using OpenGL-ES? I'm looking for tutorials which can help me learn OpenGL-ES, and I'm looking for OpenGL-ES libraries which can make life easier for beginners in OpenGL-ES.
Since Android is still small, I guess it may be help-full to read iPhone OpenGL-ES tutorials as well, as I suppose the OpenGL-ES functionality is much the same.
I have found the following useful information which I would have liked to share:
Android tutorials: DroidNova: Basic tutorial covering polygons, no textures anddev forum with some tutorials
Other Android OpenGL-ES information: Google IO lecture regarding games, not much OpenGLES The The Khronos Reference Manual is also relevant to have, but its not exactly the best place to start.
iPhone OpenGL-ES tutorials (where the OpenGl-ES information is probably useful): http://web.me.com/smaurice/AppleCoder/iPhone_OpenGL/Archive.html
[url]
As for libraries which a beginner might use to get a simpler hands-on experience with OpenGL-ES, I have only found Rokon, which is recently started, thus has many holes and bugs. And it's gnuGPL licensed (at the moment) which means it cannot be used, if we wish to sell our games.

I'm looking into writing an Android game, tough I don't curerntly own an Android device. For those of you who own a device, how does the performance on the emulator relate to real device performance? I'm especially interested in graphics related tasks. This obviously depends on both the machine running the emulator, and the specific device in question, but I'm talking rough numbers here. This question is a duplicate, but since that post is heavily outdated, I figured it's irrelevant by now.

Single Threaded OpenGL game ! (check bottom, you can download and use the helper class) Lighting disabled ! Depth Buffer disabled ! Culling enabled ! Textures disabled !
Just 176 integers (x,y values only) making 88 vertexes along with 132 index numbers making "44 triangles only"
Framerates I get is
with GL_BLENDING disabled - 145 fps approx only! enabled - 110 fps approx only!
I have the screenshot of exact code in the draw function here.. just 2 damn lines ! I have hidden only the comments.. click here to see it http://prasna991.googlepages.com/drawframe.png
variable details in the 2 lines of code =========================== ipts = 176 elements (only x and y for each vertex) totallinetriangles * 3 = 176 lineindexes = 132 elements - type "short"
Here is the screenshot of output drawing and how it will look like http://prasna991.googlepages.com/screen.png
OpenGL single threaded Initialization Helper ================================ Here is my OpenGL helper class.. makes the OpenGL initialization for newbies a cakewalk http://prasna991.googlepages.com/OpenGLHelperclass.txt
I tested by rendering on the touch event only.. frame rate drops only when u touch and drag and here I have just tested by tapping and releasing gently on the emulator and on the device
Is this the device limitations ? So graphics is actually a lot lot lot slower than on iPhone ?

I would like to be able to use the OpenGL API from both Java and C (via NDK).
In Java, there is a GL object passed, which has all GL methods on it.
In C, you just talk to the native library.
In a single onDrawFrame callback (for which Java is passed a GL), can I use methods on the GL object, and also call NDK methods which access the openGL library?
In other words, is the GL object just a wrapper for the same instance of the native library?

Seriously, emulation is not good for performance, but most roms running on gensoid look and play better that games developed for Android. Sonic 3 looks lovely, runs at 60fps and never stutters. It even seems to look higher rez than most Android apps.Android platformer games are nowhere near as good looking or smooth. So what the hell is going on? The hardware on top end Android phones (Desire, galaxy etc) is clearly capable.

Is it possible to play palm pilot games on an android? I would assume it wouldn't be too difficult since they both use touch. I wouldn't care if it didn't fit my whole screen. There are some games that I really want to play again (Space Trader, Strategic Commander (does anyone know of another game like this)).

someone showed me their iphone I have to admit, my jaw dropped and I was drooling when I saw some of their games (i would that all games were freebie versions)
Question: why does the android platform not have games that are as good??
I remember seeing one games, I think it was called scooter - the whole damn screen moved as u mived the iphone left and right I only played for a minute - but it looked damn awesome why dont we have as good games! the persons phone: heck, it was only an iphone 3g - so u cant say it was better hardware or anything angry birds - I like - apart from that, I haven't seen any games I would even rate (ok, so angry birds is just worms game reinvented - but the subtle use of great graphics make it brilliant)
Important: I have an x10 mini pro which is STILL running android 1.6 - is this the reason why? are there better games on 2.1 and 2.2? or is it to do with the fact that there are better developers for the iphone?

I liked Words with Friends when I had an iPod touch. I'm looking for something like it (Scrabble), but also anything else that's fun and you can play with your friends (poker, shooting, conquering, puzzles, etc). Preferably something where they can make a move, I receive a notification, and respond back at my convenience and vice versa, not where we both have to "be online at the same time". Oh, and free.

So we all know iPhone has better games than Android. And I'm love the "Fruit Ninja" game which is like the only one I enjoy playing on my Evo because it has good graphics and above all it's fun. I was wondering if there is anyway to get iPhone games on Android phones? Or if we can request someone to make some of the iPhone games for Android.

I'm looking for any Android games that I can play on my Evo (1 more week !) online with other random players. I tried searching appbrain, but I had a hard time finding any good ones. My GF has a scrabble-like game on her iPhone that sets her up with random players and its pretty fun. Anything of the sort ? (not necessarily scrabble, any online game would be great).
