Can we place a small view over another large view? For example, i have a VideoView which is playing a file in the background. Over this, somewhere in the middle/corner, I want to place another ImageView.
But in Linear/Relative Layout, views can be placed only one after another or relativ to each other. And Absolutelayout is advised against. So what do I do?

I want to add a view inside a FrameLayout programmatically and to place it in a specific point within the layout with a specific width and height. Does FrameLayout support this? If not, should I use an intermediate ViewGroup to achieve this? My initial idea was to add an AbsoluteLayout to the FrameLayout and place the view inside the AbsoluteLayout. Unfortunately I just found out that AbsoluteLayout is deprecated.

I have ListView, where each row contains two edittext boxes. I'd like on list item selected(using Dpad) place focus on first edittext box. I tried the following code, but it does not work: ListView list = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.list); OnItemClickListener click_listener = new OnItemClickListener() {public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position, long id){EditText box1= (EditText ) view.findViewById(R.id.box1); box1.requestFocus(); return ;} list.setOnItemClickListener(click_listener);}

I have a custom ViewGroup. The idea is to be able to place controls at absolute positions and then have the ViewGroup scale those controls based on the difference in the screen dimensions with respect to the original design dimensions. I am using the code below. In response to the 'onMeasure' message, I am storing the width and height of the view. Then on the 'onLayout' message I am computing new dimensions for the child controls and adjusting their sizes proportionally. This all works to some degree. However for certain controls (e.g. button controls), the control resizes, but the text inside does not remain centered within the control. I am thinking that there is some other call I need to make to update the child controls after I change their size.

I am trying to make/edit my first custom rom. As base i am using the Oxygen rom. This rom has all his apps stored in system/app. I inserted an launcher(hololauncher), keyboard(custom htcime) and gallery(quickpick) apk in this folder, but after the rom is flashed these apps are causing fc's and the gallery app isnt even flashed.
I know that not every apk can be placed in the system/app folder, but how can i ensure that these apps will install correctly during flashing.

I want to build my own custom view which should look like the Crysis-GUI.At first I designed a XML-based Layout and made it visible via the setContentView(int resid)-Method. Worked pretty well.But now I wan't to go a step further and draw in my Layout. So I created a new Class, let it extend View and overrode the onDraw()-Method. So far so good.But how can I still use my XML-Layout? I can't do setContentView anymore, so how could the same effect be achieved?

I have a custom view that works fine and I'm trying to get gestures into it. The most common technique I see is to add XML, such as this (from Android docs.Can someone point out my errors, suggest a better way that will allow me to get gesture callbacks and/or suggest diagnostic approaches?

I'm trying to make a custom dialog to show a view in this dialog. This is the Builder code:
//Getting the layout LayoutInflater inflater = (LayoutInflater) getSystemService(LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE);
View layout = inflater.inflate(R.layout.custom_dialog_simple,(ViewGroup) findViewById(R.id.rlDialogSimple));
//Change Text and on click
TextView tvDialogSimple = (TextView) layout.findViewById(R.id.tvDialogSimple);
tvDialogSimple.setText(R.string.avisoComprobar);
Button btDialogSimple = (Button) layout.findViewById(R.id.btDialogSimple);
btDialogSimple.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View v) {
//Do some stuff
//Here I want to close the dialog
} } );
AlertDialog.Builder builder = new AlertDialog.Builder(AcPanelEditor.this);
builder.setView(layout);
AlertDialog alert = builder.create();
alert.show();
So, I want to dismiss the dialog in the onClick of btDialogSimple. How I can do it? I don't know how to call the dismiss method from inside a onclicklistener. My buttons have a custom layout, so I don't want to make a builder.setPositiveButton.

I'm getting a NullPointerException while attempting to create a Spinner within a dialog and can't seem to debug it because the code looks solid. Wonder if anyone else has any idea. Any help is greatly appreciated.
protected Dialog onCreateDialog(int id) { Dialog dialog;
switch(id) { case DIALOG_SEND_PM: Spinner spinner = (Spinner)findViewById(R.id.pm_server);
ArrayAdapter<CharSequence> adapter = ArrayAdapter.createFromResource(this, R.array.server_array, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item);
adapter.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item);
spinner.setAdapter(adapter);
spinner.setOnItemSelectedListener(new MyOnItemSelectedListener());
dialog = new Dialog(PM.this);
dialog.setContentView(R.layout.send_pm_dialog);
dialog.setTitle(R.string.send_pm);
pmMessage = (EditText) dialog.findViewById(R.id.send_pm_box);
Button sendPm = (Button) dialog.findViewById(R.id.send_pm_button);
sendPm.setOnClickListener(PM.this);
break;
default: dialog = null;
}
I get the exception at adapter.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item);
I changed the context to MyClass.this and the exception moved down to the next line, which confuses me. I'm wondering if it is the adapter having a null value but I call everything the same way I have before while not in a dialog.
Relevant XML data:
<LinearLayout> <TextView/> <LinearLayout> <TextView/>
<EditText/> <TextView/> <Spinner
android:id="@+id/pm_server"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:background="@drawable/yblueborder"
android:textColor="#ABABAB"/>
</LinearLayout> <Button/> </LinearLayout>

I spent quite a long time trying to get my first custom dialog box to work, following the example in the Android Dev Guide.
Specifically:
CODE:............
I kept getting a badtokenexception whenever I tried to show the dialog.
Eventually I found a forum posting which suggested changing it to:
new Dialog(this);
Which made the problem go away.
My question is if the example is incorrect, or was the code not intended to be used in an Activity method?

The monthly walking distance recap in Google Now is useful, but if that card disappears how can I view the information again?
Obviously some of the information is stored somewhere in the googleverse as it does comparisons (i.e. 70 miles in nov verses 55 in Dec).
