How can I know who started(bind) service?
I already check 'RunningServiceInfo()' but I couldn't find.
I have a service that will monitor location changes daily. What I know so far that to start a service at boot, I have to follow the linked tutorial. This way I can get the service started at boot, but to save battery I need it only between 9am-9pm.
Question is pretty simple, so I will repeat:
How can I ensure a service is started at 9am and stopped 9pm every day?
I have small simple Service and big MainActivity with UI. Service is called periodically from AlarmManager. My Service need to know if MainActivity is on the screen and inform MainActivity about state changing.

Now if there is already activity1 started by someother activity then based on the user request i need to stop activity1 and start activity2 or activity3. If the acitivity1 is started by my service then i can do finishactivity(requestcode) and shall receive a call to onActivityResult() then i can start next activity 2 or 3. But can i stop the activity1 which is started by some other activity from a service?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've successfully implemented a BootReceiver, AlarmManager, and Service per the code here: http://github.com/commonsguy/cw-advandroid/tree/master/SystemServices...
Inside the doWakefulWork method of the Service I am instantiating a few classes, but some of them require my Activity to be running. How do I actually start the Activity? The code above only starts the AlarmManager and Service.
There are also times where the Activity *is* already started, like if the user manually opened it. So I also need to start the Activity "only if it's not already running". Hows that work?
And what about the situation where the user first installs your application and may not even reboot their phone for a week. In that case, do you have to start the Service from the Activity? But then the Service will die with the Activity.
I am looking to code simple application
let's say I have an activity that starts a service which is simply a counter and counter value is reflected on activity UI , when I navigate away from this .I want this counter to be continue and when I get back to Activity I want to see counter count.so the question is
how can a reconnect with the started service and then if I want to kill it ? how can I know the service is already started?
I'm developing an Android application that consists of:
a lightweight background service that logs events to a DB
a heavier GUI application that summarizes these events and displays graphs.
I'm having trouble creating the service part, though. The graphic application can use quite some RAM, and when it goes to the background, the OS closes it after some time of not being used.
The problem is, when the application gets shut down, so does the service. This is bad because this keeps me from recording further events. I don't care if the application gets terminated, but the service needs to keep on running.
I have tried numerous ways to keep the service alive, like having it use threads or a differently named process than the main app. Nothing has worked, and I have found no help on any of the android developer pages or forums.
I start service by using:
private ServiceConnection _serviceConnection = new ServiceConnection() {...}
bindService(new Intent(this, MainService.class), _serviceConnection, Context.BIND_AUTO_CREATE);
I want to 'restart' the service. (Let's not argue why I want to do that)
I do that by:
unbindService(_serviceConnection);
// Do some initialization on service
bindService(new Intent(this, MainService.class), _serviceConnection, Context.BIND_AUTO_CREATE);
I noticed service doesn't die(onDestroy doesn't run) until I call next bindService();
So some static initialization I did on service got cleared by onDestroy() implementation.
Question: How do you make sure unbindService() will stop service (run onDestory()),
so that I could do initialization after and re-run bindService()?
I have created a service that works great, it is launched from an activity at the moment. I'm looking to package it into a .jar file so that other people can add the jar to then their projects and then run the service. Can anyone tell me how I can launch this service from the app that it is included in?

I tried with serComponent( ) & serClassName( ) as well, but for both the cases onServiceConnected( ) is not getting called. I googled and used the hint for listening boot completed and user present intents and starting the service in the broadcast receiver.
how can i access the service of other package (process).
I have two apps, one runs in namespace com.gtosoft.voyager and the other is com.gtosoft.dash. From com.gtosoft.dash I would like to start up the service which is defined in com.gtosoft.voyager...
I think I need an intent, but what arg(s) would I pass to the intent before kicking it off with startService()?
If they were in the same package I could just use

I have a service class my.app.MyService that I'm attempting to launch from my.app.MyActivity as follows:
Intent svc = new Intent( this, MyService.class );
The manifest contains the entries:
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_BACKGROUND_SERVICE" />
<service android:name =".MyService" />
LogCat gives the message:
"Unable to start service Intent { comp={"my.app/ my.app.MyService" } } : not found"
Could someone kindly let me know what I am missing?
OS: Ice Cream Sandwich

I am having issues with a simple service not running correctly. The logcat shows some force stopping on the installed apk. Also the broadcast receiver should listen to android.intent.action.ACTION_POWER_CONNECTED but it is not.
This all worked on froyo 2.2 on a samsung galaxy tab.
Here is the snippet from logcat when I do an 'adb install testService.apk:
Code:
D/AndroidRuntime(15251):
D/AndroidRuntime(15251): >>>>>> AndroidRuntime START com.android.internal.os.RuntimeInit <<<<<<
D/AndroidRuntime(15251): CheckJNI is OFF
D/AndroidRuntime(15251): Calling main entry com.android.commands.pm.Pm
I/ActivityManager( 153): Start proc com.android.defcontainer for service
[code]....
i'm a bit stuck with remote services in android. thing is i implemented a remote service in package "a.b.c" and i want other applications to be able to access this service. i got rid of the whole crappy aidl-stuff and designed the "interface" of the service to work via broadcasted intents. works fine so far...
problem is: how do i get a different application (different package, different project, maybe even a different developer, ...) to start/stop the service?
CODE:..........
This will crash my app immediately on startup. what did i do wrong? how will i get this to work?
once it's running, commands and data will be passed via broadcasts. so that should be no real problem...
i work on custom Application Manager and try to get the disk usage of installed package. So PackageManager.getpackageSizeInfo was removed from SDK on 0.9->1.0 update android.content.pm. PackageStats(String pkgName)(cacheSize, codeSize, dataSize) returns always "0" Size of phys. file (java.io.File) in "/data/app" seems wrong/not completely. Has anybody any solution to get the total disc space used by an installed package?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm attempting to override an Android View class to tweak the functionality just slightly. But I need to modify a field that does not have a setter method. I've placed the subclass in a package called android.widget. Why can't I access any of the package-private member fields? I notice that the compiler says they "cannot be resolved," rather than not being accessible. Does this have something to do with how Android.jar is built?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to run the sample soft keyboard included in the SDK. I am using the debugger, and the literature says that to use a breakpoint while debugging a SERVICE, I need to include:
android.os.Debug.waitForDebugger();
So here is the portion of the code I modified:
CODE:...........
I have put a couple of breakpoints, at the statements indicated by the comments.
This is what happens: the debugger first stops at the breakpoint1, for a few seconds. But then the service restarts. For the life of me I can't figure out what makes the service to restart.
Rumors have started flying all over the net that the droid update has started being sent out.

It is doing some socket communication with a Remote Host PC and as well as with a local android application. It will start based on incoming SMS. While my application is running, I tried to use the browser application. Within a minute my application is getting crashed.(in DDMS log, I found the application process has died) And again I restarted my application, it is always getting crashed within a minute. I could not find the reason from the DDMS log. Someone can help me to figure out the problem.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI want a countdowntimer to halt on a menu and also when the user goes from that menu to another activity. When the user comes back from that activity or when the menu is closed, the timer should still halt. However when the user went to the home screen and clicks on the icon again, I want the timer to restart. So my question is, is there a way to detect if the user has just opened your application, or if the user comes back from another activity or menu?

So the very straightforward method I thought is increasing the count for an Activity when it was started. But how can I get the information?
Is there a way to do this?
Can you access the activity stack in a way to grab what activity came before the one now in view?
I have a situation where an activity needs to know where it was started from, so it knows what data to display in that current activity.
There's already been some discussion of this, in various lists and blogs. I finally got an AnimationDrawable to work, but I cannot start it from onResume. I can start it from a timer that onResume starts, or an onClickHandler.
I've poked around the source a bit and I can't figure out, specifically, what state the view has to be in, in order for the background AnimationDrawable to start.
Can anyone enlighten me?
I want to get started with mobile development , I know HTML,CSS,JavaScript,PHP and C#.
What is the best way to get started?
I know that for example, if i want to create an iphone application i need to know objective c (and get mac),Which language is the best for mobile development (and cross platform - works on Nokia,IPhone,android,palm,Blackberry).
I'm looking for something to get up and running quickly with Android development. Perhaps a great tutorial covering the basics. I see a lot of posts on getting started but the ones I have looked over so far aren't great. What do people here recommend?
