Android :: Process Dialog For Long Operation - Thread Object

May 29, 2010

In the code showed as below I create a process dialog for doing some long
operation (in this case waiting 4 seconds). It runs as it should. And shows the "Starting" and "Done" message but when it finishes and I click Button1 again it terminates.

public class main extends Activity { public ProgressDialog dialog = null;
final Handler handler = new Handler(){ public void handleMessage(Message msg){
dialog.dismiss(); TextView tv2 = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.TextView02);
tv2.setText("Done"); } };
Thread runlongjob = new Thread(){ public void run(){
SystemClock.sleep(4000); handler.sendEmptyMessage(0);
} };
/** Called when the activity is first created. */
@Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main);
} public void clickhandler(View v){ switch(v.getId()){
case (R.id.Button01): TextView tv1 = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.TextView01);
tv1.setText("Starting...");
dialog = ProgressDialog.show(main.this, "Please wait", "Doing Job...",
true); runlongjob.start(); break; } }

Android :: Remote Service Process Persists - I.e. Won't Disappear From Process Table

Feb 21, 2009

At a certain point in my program, when I'm completely done with my service, my activity executes unbindService() and stopService() -- yet the process persists. I can tell that it persists because I run "ps" in "adb -e shell":

CODE:.............

"adb logcat", I can show you the sequence of events:

ACTIVITY: context.unbindService(serviceConnection);

SERVICE: onUnbind();

ACTIVITY: stopService(serviceIntent); & returns true!

SERVICE: onDestroy();

First, my activity calls unbindService(serviceConnection). According to the documentation, unbindService() will "Disconnect from an application service. You will no longer receive calls as the service is restarted, and the service is now allowed to stop at any time." So that is fine, and it is happening.

Appropriately, we see the onUnbind() call happen on the service side. According to the documentation, onUnbind() is called when "all clients have disconnected from a particular interface published by the service." So this confirms the correct service connection is being passed, and that the service is responding accordingly.

Next, my activity calls stopService(serviceIntent), and returns true. According to the documentation, stopService() does the following: "If there is a service matching the given Intent that is already running, then it is stopped and true is returned; else false is returned." Again, this is happening and returning true.

In response, the service's onDestroy() method is called. According to the documentation, onDestroy() is "Called by the system to notify a Service that it is no longer used and is being removed. The service should clean up any resources it holds (threads, registered receivers, etc) at this point. Upon return, there will be no more calls in to this Service object and it is effectively dead."

At this point I expect the process to disappear from the process table. Yet it remains indefinitely. But why?

Also, the process is so persistent that I can bind to it again, and I see that it is the same exact process responding because the PID (process ID) is the same!

Samsung Moment :: Getting Process Com.google.process.gapps Stoped Unexpectedly

Apr 17, 2010

I've searched around the forums (here and SDX forums) and although it seems the few people that had this issue were able to solve it, my case seems a bit different.

It's different because of the people I've read solving the issue, it was a problem with something they changed / removed with gmail / gmail storage or talk / talk storage. And when they cleared the cache or re-installed the problem went away. Also, it seemed that the same people had a problem with downloading from the market...

Neither of the above apply to me, but yet I'm still getting this FC error all the time!

I was helping a friend with their CL14 Moment out of the box...and went from stock 1.5 CL14 to 2.1 DD03 w/Joey recovery to EclairDD10 and v5 root. I then did the streaming media fix, and then the private app (build.prop) fix (all previously done with my phone no problems). I did all of these update right in a row, and after my last re-boot the FC error (process com.google.process.gapps has stoped unexpectedly) started showing up and won't go away.

The only .apk / odex files I removed were the preloaded Sprint apps

Does anybody have any other ideas on how I can get this FC error to stop? I've tried clearing the cache / data for all the mail / talk apps, rebooted, cleared dalvik cache...

Android :: Does An App Only Have One Context Object

Jul 19, 2010

I'm confused about the concept of the Context class. I see that it's a base class of Activity, but the Android docs also mentions the Context storing global information about the app environment. So in my app which has 3 activities, does that mean I have 3 distinct Context objects, or do they actually refer to 1 entity? Also, what is the lifetime of a Context object- does it live until the last component of this activity's process is garbage collected?

I can't release the Camera(android.hardware.Camera) until the user clicks on the widget the second time. So the user clicks on the widget the first time, I get the camera and hold on to it until they click the widget again.

The problem I am running into is on the second click, I am trying to get the Camera again, which I can't because I currently have it in use.

Android :: Sharing An Object Between Activities

Nov 24, 2010

I have a Weather app with four Activities. The main/launcher activity is 'invisible' using...

android:theme="@android:style/Theme.Translucent.NoTitleBar"`

Aand is simply used to do a few checks (whether this is a new install, whether a network connection is available etc) before firing off one of the other Activities. The other Activities are UI-oriented - two simply display weather data pulled from a website and the third to provide a location 'picker' so the user can choose which area to show the weather for.

However, all four activities make use of a WeatherHelper object which basically does everything from checking for available SD card storage to maintaining preferences and pulling/formatting website pages.

So, my question(s)...what is the best way to have one instance of WeatherHelper which can be used by multiple activities and where/how are best to create it in my case?

I've been an OO programmer for a lot of years but I'm very new to Android and the design concepts - I've read a lot on the Android Developers site over the past weeks but I've stalled trying to decide on this.

I often run into the following dilemma: I need some singleton-like object in my app (typically some central manager-like thing) and this object needs a context for various things.
