Android :: Does An App Only Have One Context Object
Jul 19, 2010I'm confused about the concept of the Context class. I see that it's a base class of Activity, but the Android docs also mentions the Context storing global information about the app environment. So in my app which has 3 activities, does that mean I have 3 distinct Context objects, or do they actually refer to 1 entity? Also, what is the lifetime of a Context object- does it live until the last component of this activity's process is garbage collected?

Oct 10, 2010I often run into the following dilemma: I need some singleton-like object in my app (typically some central manager-like thing) and this object needs a context for various things. This means that I either have to pass a context to all methods needing one or have some sort of init-pattern to the object. Neither is pretty I think. What is the correct way of doing this? Or is this simply (even the definition of) a Service?

I don't see any methods in View that return Activity. What is the proper way to do this? Or is there a better alternative for working with TextViews from within another View context. Basically, I am calling setContentView(R.layout.xxx) in onCreate() (as usual), so I don't really have a way to pass in references to additional TextViews unless I awkwardly retrieve the View after setContentView and then make calls on it.

In order to avoid passing a Context object to each constructor of these classes (and because many of them are classes with only static methods which don't have a constructor), I have implemented these steps : The main activity of my application (which is launched at startup) is called Dispatcher. In the onCreate method of this class, I keep a reference to the created Dispatcher object in a static public variable of the Dispatcher class which can be accessed from any class in the project.

Aug 19, 2010Currently my application allows the user to set the application to run in full screen. I than check in every activity at onCreate() if the user has set to make the app run in full screen. Is there a better way to do this? I have many other settings that I do and I find this method a little bad in terms of code design. Is there a way to set full screen for the lifetime of app or until I set it back to not full screen? One way to do it would be to have a custom Activity class that does these checks and all my activities can just implement it? would that be slow is it recommended?

Im getting a weird behavior when using the following code to send a new intent to the current sub-activity, then change tab, and getting back to original tab. (TAB1 -> TAB2 -> TAB1)

onSaveInstanceState() is called on TAB1, then TAB2 is current subActivity, but when going back to TAB1 onCreate() is called.
onCreate() is not called with the same test without using the onNewIntent() described above.

My ContentProvider manages a list of records, but only 1 is designated "active" and will be accessed by different applications a lot. I was wondering if it's safe to cache the index of this active record in memory as a member of my ContentProvider to speed up lookup.

Jul 19, 2010Is there an exception in the lifetime rules for a parent activity that's in the background after invoking startActivityForResult()? From my understanding, in low memory scenarios, the background activities are killed before the foreground. Does this rule still apply even if the background activity started the foreground one for the purpose of obtaining some result?
In this case, I think it would make sense for the foreground child activity to get killed first or to equalize the lifetime of the parent and child.

When I try to construct a java URI object from this object, I get an IllegalArgumentException with the exception description Expected file scheme in URI: content://media/external/images/media/3 whereas the android URI shows the scheme as content

I'd like this to just sit and do nothing until any application wants to give it data to send. That's all well and good.I have register an intent filter and the usual stuff and can process the data. But I want to process the data coming from different activities in different threads (subsequent calls from the same application will be computed on the same thread).Is there a way to get the calling package or app or whatever? I'd prefer not to require passing in an identifier as an extra to prevent spoofing. (It's not a serious security concern, it's just each application needs its data processed in the order that it's received.)
