Android :: MVC Model State Change Requires Creating An Intent?
Apr 9, 2009
I have a main activity class that launches a couple of my subordinate activities from a tabHost.
Periodically (actually when I receive an incoming message on a socket), I want to inform the subordinate activities that application state has changed so that they can refresh their views.
In Swing I could wire this together using something like a PropertyChangeListener. As far as I can see, the Android design philosophy requires creating an Intent and broadcasting to (as far as I can tell all) other activities that are running.
This strikes me as overkill considering that I'm only trying to notify my own views of a model change. Am I missing something?

I want to send an intent to my service everytime the state of Wifi connectivity changes. So when I currently use a broadcast receiver to listen for the state changes in Wifi, so when this recieves an intent I want to be able to send this info on to my service. Is this possible and if so the correct way to do it?

We have an Activity which has a form on it and we launch an Intent to take a picture.We've overridden onSaveInstanceState and onRestoreInstanceState to push the data from the view fields But, on the return from the CameraActivity, the onRestoreInstanceState method is never called. Should this behavior work when calling another Intent?

When creating an intent with action send to send some data, is there a way to filter the results that are included in the activity chooser that is created using Intent.createChooser? I have not seen a way to do this other than setting the mime type, but it is not flexible enough.
For example, there is a situation when I want e-mail apps to be the only results in the activity chooser dialog. Setting the type to "text/ html" successfully filters this down to email apps, except when bluetooth is enabled. Bluetooth appears in the list as well, but this is not desirable. Surely there is a way to have a little more control over the results?

im currently looking for the way that my app knows when the phone has being paired and connected to a bluetooth headset device.
I read something about this intent, but not on the Reference documentation of http://developer.android.com
android.bluetooth.a2dp.intent.action.SINK_STATE_CHANGED
Is this actually working, is it officially supported.
I mean, can we just register a broadcastreceiver to handle this intent , check for the EXTRA_STATE string extra to see if it equals STATE_CONNECTED and be sure that the phone is now connected with a bluetooth headset device ?
What about this BluetoothA2dpService class? There is no official documentation about this, everything i found i from code snippets of the android OS source code.

when the Optimus V came out, I found a thread either on here or XDA about how to change the model number to think it was a different phone. I did this to allow for the usage of Netflix, and I think I may have changed it to a Nexus model..
My current phone, the Optimus F7, is rooted and running stock Android 4.1.2 JB. (I rooted in order to allow for uninhibited tethering from my carrier.)I have browsed here, XDA, and countless pages on Bing and Google... yet I have found nothing about doing this... to any phone.My only desire (not the phone) is to make my F7 think it's - at least - a Galaxy S3. Many of my friends, coworkers and family have the S3 and I figure out things and solve problems on their phones, yet I find nothing on my own, so I simply wanted to turn it into an S3.
I am aware that I could simply get an S3, but I have had horrid luck with Samsung devices (not software) in the past, but have had wonderful luck with LG devices.

I have a notification that starts my activity and passes a messages using the intent's putExtra() function. The message is then displayed to the user in the activity's onCreate function. When the application is restarted due to a orientation change, the message is shown again as it is still in the intent's bundled data.
How can I remove the extra data?
I tried the following:
Bundle bundle = getIntent().getExtras();
if (bundle.getBoolean("showMessage")) {
// ... show message that is in bundle.getString("message")
// remove message
bundle.remove("showMessage");
}
But the message will still be shown after the orientation changed, seems like the intent used is not the one I changed, but the original one. The only workaround I found is to save the showMessage additionally in onSaveInstanceState(). Is there another way? Or is this the way to go?

I was looking at the way Android handles orientation change for my application (I discovered that it restarts the mainactivity on orientation change :| ). I've seen that you can ovveride the method protected void onSaveInstanceState(Bundle outState)to save stuff, then have the in onStart. The problem is that I've my view with custom objects and a listview using a custom adapter... Everything is in a ArrayList of these objects, but I've noticed that you can't put arbitrary objects in the bundle! So how do I save the state?

I have a compound UI component built up from a ViewGroup containing a number of TextView, ImageView etc. components. Many of these have StateListDrawables as their images/backgrounds. Is there any way of making them select from this drawable based on the state of the parent ViewGroup rather than the component itself? Ideally I want to be able to change the visual state of all children of the ViewGroup (text colour, image etc) based on the state of the ViewGroup, preferably without having to hook up complex logical code. This seems like a fairly common sort of requirement, so I was hoping it would be straightforward in Android - am I going to be disappointed?

I'm a little confused by what I'm seeing with regards to phone state transitions via the PhoneStateListener. When I receive a call, this is what happens: (call comes in) RINGING -> IDLE (I pick up) OFFHOOK (I hang up) IDLE It's that first transition from RINGING to IDLE without any interaction from me (not ending the call, not answering the call) that confuses me. Do I really have to implement an idle counter to know that an incoming call has really ended? Seems like the reported phone state represents some sort of phone state that isn't the obvious one.Is this a bug or am I just not in tune with the paradigm here?

I am customizing native phonebook application as a third party application which can be launched by the same intent as the native application. I have installed that application in my G1 phone. When I have clicked on Contacts icon in launcher menu it a menu pops out and asks me to select which app to lauch i.e., native contacts or my customized contact application. I have selected my application and I have also selected to use this selection as my default choice. After that system never put a pop-up and whenever I clicked on contacts it launches my customized application.
Now my problem is, I do not know how do I change this setting i.e., tell the phone to put the pop-up again so that I can select native app or my app?
Does anyone has any idea?

I've been doing Android application development for Android 1.5 on Debian etch (4.0), and things were going okay. I then tried upgrading the SDK to support more recent platforms. The problem is that the vast majority of the tools that are executables (I'm not counting shell scripts) seem to now depend on glibc >= 2.4. When trying to execute them, or passing them to ldd, I get an error like:
./aapt: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by ./aapt)
On Debian, the file /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6 is provided by the libc6-i686 package, which on etch is version 2.3.6.ds1-13etch7, but on lenny I see that the version has increased to 2.7-18.
I can think of a few workarounds: - Copy the required libraries from a supported platform and point to them with LD_LIBRARY_PATH when using the affected executables. - Download the sources for the tools (e.g. http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/frameworks/base.git;a=tree;...) and build my own local versions for Debian etch. - Give up using Debian etch and switch to another platform.
All of these are potentially viable alternatives for me, so this isn't a show stopper, and indeed http://developer.android.com/sdk/requirements.html says that it's only tested for GNU/Linux on Ubuntu Hardy Heron, which uses version 2.7-10ubuntu5. Nevertheless, it's somewhat annoying, and I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts, or if the Android team even knows of the issue. I'm guessing that sometime in the transition from 1.5 to 1.6, they switched from an earlier Ubuntu version (I have to go back to Dapper, which uses 2.3.6-0ubuntu20.5, to find a pre-2.4 version) to Hardy, and this was just a side effect. But I'd be surprised if there was anything specific in the source that really required libc 2.4, and it's possible that if they were just building with an appropriate compiler flag that backwards compatibility could be maintained.
This affects all platform-specific tools for platforms >= android-1.6 (so aapt, aidl, and dexdump), and it affects all platform-agnostic tools (except for hprof-conf and mksdcard; so adb, dmtracedump, emulator, sqlite3, and zipalign) installed with the new modular sdk download (android-sdk_r3-linux.tgz) available starting in the android 1.6 timeframe (the corresponding tools from the android 1.5 timeframe in the monolithic SDK download of android-sdk-linux_x86-1.5_r3.zip work fine).

I am trying to port my usage meter from a JavaScript Gadget (win) / Widget (OSX) to Android. Total newbie when comes to JAVA + Eclipse + Android 2.1 SDK. Essentially what I want to do is load a page, pass through a username and password and load the resulting page into a array that I can then run some regular expressions through.
My code from JavaScript (I've replace the actual URL with a dummy one) is:
xmlhttp.open("post","https://acme.com.au/your_account/index.php?function=login",false);
xmlhttp.setRequestHeader("If-Modified-Since", "Sat, 1 Jan 2000 00:00:00 GMT");
xmlhttp.setRequestHeader("Content-Type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded");
xmlhttp.send("check_username=" + username + "&password=" + password);
I need to know the Android equivalent to the above please. I've played around with WebView but that loads the page in a web browser which isn't what I want.

I'm working on an app for a client that requires streaming of an AAC audio stream. Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do about the stream format on the server. I'm working on Android and have discovered that Android's media player does not support raw AAC streams (which is what I'm getting). I found a project on Google Code that supports it (I tested it with the stream) but it's GPL'ed and that doesn't work for my client. I don't have much experience with this sort of thing so forgive me if my ideas aren't great. I know Android can play AAC encoded content if it is in an MP4 wrapper so I had thought about creating an MP4 wrapper on the fly on the client-side or perhaps even just doing some conversion to another format on the fly. Are these reasonable options? Does anybody have better suggestions?
Edit To rephrase, is it possible to put a raw AAC stream from a web server in an MP4 container in real time? If so, does anybody know of resources to help me with the process?

The problem is, that I can't use the suggested solution under android, because it throws java.lang.verifyError. After reading a little bit, I found out, that the class that was used to store the data to file, is not usable in android. can you suggest another solution, which is similar easy to use?
