Android : Location On Screen Coordinates Of A View?
Mar 22, 2009
I am developing a game in android and i want to capture screen coordinates of a view(ImageView) which is embedded in frame.
Hierarchy is <LinearLayout android android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="fill_parent" > <RelativeLayout android:layout_height=fill_parent" android:layout_width="fill_parent" > <FrameLayout android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:id="@+id/frame14"></ FrameLayout> </RelativeLayout> </LinearLayout>
At run time i am attaching two image views for frame layout.I wanted to capture screen coordinates of frame layout. But Couldnt do it.if i say
(FrameLayout) f=(FrameLayout)findViewById(R.id.frame14); int[] loc = new int[2]; f.getLocationOnScreen(loc); System.out.println(loc[0]); System.out.println(loc[1]);
I get Null Pointer Exception for getLocationOnScreen() method.
If I try to get f.getLeft() and f.getRight() they return as 0 coordinates.
Can anyone please tell me how to find location on screen of a view.

I've been trying to write a little application that recognizes custom events in Android: you hold your finger over a TextView for a certain length of time, and it changes color.I'm using the MotionEvent coordinates and checking if they are within the bounds of a particular TextView, which is within a table.I am just attaching the onTouch listener to the table within the activity. But I get weird errors: the coordinates seem to be off by one view (i.e. if I touch the view below the view above reacts); or sometimes one will react, and the other will not. Any idea what might be going on?

In my application I have a list of +400 GPS coordinates which I retrieve from addresses. The application should give me the top X nearest coordinates based on my current location.
This application is possible (I think) with the distanceBetween function. But (I think) the application is really inefficient when i iterate through the list of 400 coordinates and check the distance within a certain time interval. Another option is (I think) the proximityAlert function? All coordinates are loaded in this function and when my current location comes in the radius of a coordinate an alert is given. But the downside of this solution (I think) is the high memory usage which implies a short battery life of the Android phone?

I'm new to android development. Is it possible for a view (with a particular layout) to "appear" at the location where the user "touches"? If so, how? Like the idea of right-clicking on your computer - a menu pops down wherever you right-click and when you navigate away, it disappears.

I use Android emulator to test my location based application. The cordinates are provided by geo fix command (for example: geo fix 2.31278 48.9533 10). But when the new location event is fired, the cordinates are not the same as those in the command: I got latitude = 48.95800053333334, longitude = 2.3033544999999997 (I use Location.getLatitude() and Location.getLongitude() methods). Does anyone have an idea of my trouble ?

I'm trying to get the absolute screen pixel coordinates of the top left corner of a view. However, all methods I can find such as getLeft() and getRight() don't work as they all seem to be relative to the parent of the view, thus giving me 0. What is the proper way to do this?
If it helps, this is for a 'put the picture back in order' game. I want the user to be able to draw a box to select multiple pieces. My assumption is that the easiest way to do that is to getRawX() and getRawY() from the MotionEvent and then compare those values against the top left corner of the layout holding the pieces. Knowing the size of the pieces, I can then determine how many pieces have been selected. I realise I can use getX() and getY() on the MotionEvent, but as that returns a relative position that makes determining which pieces were selected more difficult. (Not impossible, I know, but it seems unnecessarily complicated).

I have a quick development question. I have an application that displays an image. You can pinch zoom/move the image around easy enough. What I'm wondering is how would I go about mapping the location of the users touch to the coordinates on the image itself, and not the screen?

I moved out of state for college & work, and whenever I am making the 8 hour drive home people are constantly bugging me about how far I am and when I'll be arriving. I don't really like texting or talking while I'm driving, so I'm looking for an app to help me out.
Is there an application that could post my current location on google maps whenever I have the app running?
Bonus points if it could be integrated into a navigation app somehow to show my trip route and basic information (e.g. how long I've been driving and estimated time of arrival).
You guys know of anything like this? Basically I want to be able to send a url to my friends or family to monitor my location.

I have built an app for the Motorola Droid which should automatically update a server with the phone's location. After the user performs a particular task on the main activity screen, an alarm is set to update the user's location periodically, using a service. The alarm is explicitly stopped when the user completes another task. Thing is, I have set up a location manager within the main activity's onCreate() method which is supposed to place the first acquired lat/long into two textview fields. Even though the manifest is set up for acquiring coarse and fine coords and I'm using requestLocationUpdates (String provider, long minTime, float minDistance, LocationListener listener), with minTime and minDistance set to zero, I'm not seeing the coords coming up on the screen.
With that, I'm not recording any locations on the server. When I seed the textviews with sample coords, they are being recorded fine on the server. I am not at a computer that can run the IDE, so don't currently have the code, but am desperate for some help on this. One other thing is that the main activity screen calls a photography app before the user manually clicks "send data". I'm suspicious that I may need to override the main activity's onResume() method to do this location acquisition.

I'm trying to write an app for my Samsung Vibrant (running android 2.1).I used the example "Form Stuff" app available as tutorial on the android developers website. I basically added a background picture to the application. the background picture has some text on it towards the top. I want to display a list of elements (to be selectable by teh user) but I want this list to start from a certain position on the screen (say for example - start from the middle of the screen). tried reading the listview under dev resource and searched the forums but I could not find a way to do this.Could anyone please help me out? or if this is not possible, then suggest me something else which i can place at a certain position on the screen.

I am using these three lines to add a compass on the MapView: mMyLocationOverlay = new MyLocationOverlay (this, mapView);mMyLocationOverlay. enableCompass(); mapView.getOverlays() .add(mMyLocation Overlay) ; However the default position of the compass showing on the screen is not too good for my apps, and I want to move it to somewhere else. Anyone knows how I can achieve that?

I'm developing a mapping app using Eclipse 3.5.I'm setting the minimum update period with the LocationManager's requestLocationUpdates method, via a configuration activity. When I set the property I see in Logcat that the system process sets the value OK.When I actually send a new location from the DDMS emulator control and the location changes on the map view, I see that the system process then sets the minimum time to zero.Below is a capture of the system's log messages. You can see that I'm setting the period to 32 seconds, then 16, then, after I've sent a simulated location change the system sets it to zero. The map responds to location changes to location changes instantly even if they are sent only a couple of seconds apart.

It is not updating the location. My code is: locManager = (LocationManager)getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE); locListener = new MyLocationListener();locManager.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager .GPS_PROVIDER ,0,0,locListener); location = locManager.getLastKnownLocation(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER);if(location != null){latitude = location.getLatitude();longitude = location.getLongitude();} Please find the mistake and when i launch first time it is not working on second time itself it is working so check this thing also.

In DDMS I would usually send coordinates in the Emulator Control tab.Is there a place to simulate coordinates derived from the cell phone network provider?
