Android : Live Wallpaper Architecture Run In Same Process As Launcher?
Apr 26, 2010
Does the Live Wallpaper run in the same process as the Launcher? I looked through the Launcher code and cannot really figure out where the wallpaper "layer" fits in. I am looking at this with the lens of memory consumption and safeguards that the Launcher has in place against a bloated Live Wallpaper.

I recently installed launcher pro beta (which I love) and removed home++ which I had been using for some time. I've also installed the latest update for launcher pro.As part of this change I added some live wallpaper. Funny thing is that my phone (droid) will just spontaneously revert back to the background I was using with home++. The live wallpaper will work for a short time, then I'll turn my phone on and, voila, old background. I can't even find that background anywhere on my phone.I have no idea why my phone is doing this and how I can delete this rogue background from replacing my live wallpaper.

I have my incredible set to use the live wallpaper "water". When I turn the phone off to charge at the end of the day, upon restart it defaults to the htc colors wallpaper. Is there something I'm doing wrong, is there a setting I'missed to retain the "water" live wallpaper after restart, or is this just normal behavior?

In a comment on an epic StackOverflow question-and-answer, a gentleman who I will call Tim has outlined a scenario he says he is running into, one I have some difficulty believing. Reading somewhat between the lines, the flow would appear to be this:
1. User taps on an activity icon in the launcher 2. Process starts up 3. Application object is put in that process -- and a custom Application object loads an NDK library which initializes some statics/singletons 4. User uses application 5. User abandons application (e.g., HOME) 6. Later, user returns to application, before the first process is killed or recycled for use with another app 7. A second Application object is created, in the same process, before the first Application object is called with onTerminate()
This screws things up for Tim's app -- apparently, it does not deal with pre-initialized statics/singletons well. They were presumably counting on onTerminate() to let them clean up the NDK space. As a result, they are relying upon killProcess() (somehow...unclear under what conditions they might call this) to force their own process to go away, so their statics get cleaned up. Step #7 is what confuses me. I can see a new Application object being created, but only if the first Application object were terminated. I don't see any NDK-related bugs out on b.android.com that seem to match this complaint, though in principle it might cause problems for non-NDK apps as well. Has anyone encountered a new Application object being created in a process before the old one is terminated?

I saw Live Home today in the market. It looks exactly like ADW Launcher, but allows use of icon packs and adds a few more feature which I don't use (cube transitions between home screens for example). But Live Home allows icon packs ... which is big. Anyone have an opinion about this? ADW seems very stable. And I don't want to use Live Home if he is ripping off ADW (he did say it is based on ADW thought)

I seem to get this error message when I turn on the phone after powering off. I get to click "force close" and then it seems to work ok. "The application HTC Sense (process com.htc.launcher) has stopped unexpectedly."

I have bought chinese android tablet last month.
Boxchip cougar a10c,similiar as mid/player momo tablet
[URL]
It's came with android ice cream sandwich 4.0.1+rooted+unlock bootloader Working flawlessly until i installed task killer app.
I used it,and after several times i killed app, suddenly there is pop up notification came.("Unfortunately Launcher/Market/Gmail/Emulator,and many else has stopped")
I reboot the tablet, but when it turn on,it is just bootloop.I reset again, and it doesnt appear anything on the screen unless the black screen only (with sometime light flashing from the screen).
Then i flashed and format it to gingerbread (2.3.4) rom from their official web And yes,it is work and finally i can boot into home screen and do any else.
But after several time turning off and on,the problem came back again (bootloop and black screen) but somehow i manage to go to recovery mode and do factory reset+wipe data and cache, but it's useless.
I flashed it again with the same rom,and it's start working.And goes..after a while..the problem back again.
I choose to flash back to ice cream sandwich. When i turn on,then goes the same first problem at the begining ("Unfortunately Launcher/Market/Gmail/Emulator,and many else has stopped").
I reset again then new problem came out.
( Encryption Unsuccessful - Reset Android)
[URL]
Rather than use that guide,i choose to flash to gingerbread rom. Then it's fine,until..you know, reboot the device and back again to bootloop.
Is it because the task killer app?Or it is hardware failure?or maybe there is some file that has been deleted/terminated?

Android 2.1 has API support for creating live wallpapers. This means that we can implemente our own live wallpapers w00t!
However what i like to see is a Tutorial on creating such a live wallpaper. Is there going to be added one? What about battery live?
Or maybe a link to the sourcecode to one of the live wallpapers in Nexus One?
When i run a 2.1 emulator and choose a live wallpaper it says: "No live wallpapers"

I am wondering how to set a background in Live Wallpaper for Android. It seems the only options I have are to create it using a canvas which I don't want. I want to be able to set up a time lapse of a tree that goes through the seasons. I'm assuming I'll be able to set the coordinates for the leaves and then just have different times to fall, but is it possible to have them expand or even change colors?

When this is installed on a 2.1 phone, that has live wallpaper, the live wallpaper is not returned by getWallpaper() , because it just returns a Drawable, and live wallpaper probably is another thing. So the question is, is it possible to show a live wallpaper on the background of a 1.6 application? How?

I have created a small sample Live Wallpaper, and I want to use it with a small test Activity I have also created. However, I cannot seem to find an example of how to do this. The examples I have seen on the Web and in the Android sources all seem to focus on creating the live wallpaper itself, not how to link it to an Activity and display it behind the activity with transparency, etc. So far, all I have is a Live Wallpaper service, with no idea how to go about using it! Does anyone know where I could find _all_ the steps to do this?

My SGS2 with CM7 (currently 7.2) forgets which app I chose as home app. If I press the home button, the dialog to choose the home app pops up. If I select one, check default, it forgets this setting again, asks again, first it could last some hours, after a while this shortens to minutes. This bug occurs a about 4-5 weeks after a hard after reset, now the 3rd or 4th time. My guess is that some data storage file contains corrupt data.
I don't want to do another hard reset only for this one bug. So any way to delete data of an certain system app, a specific file or something else to reset the home app setting to a clear, hard reset like state?

I currently have a live wallpaper that is animated and works. However, I am trying to update the code and add in some lines which will save a file from a webpage and then read it. After reading it, the wallpaper would change its behavior. Anyways, I am having problems just saving the actual file, I know the code works because I have used the same code in previous applications. Are you just not able to write to the SDcard in a live wallpaper?

I have a series of live wallpapers out and one major sticking point I have with a certain set is that when devices switch to Landscape, the wallpaper, which in most cases is an image designed to fit the screen in portrait mode, appears off center. What is the conventional way to detect the shift from portrait to landscape?
