Android :: ListAdapter In Android 1.5 And 1.6 - Differences
Aug 29, 2010
I made an application that uses a ListAdapter to display some items. In my getView method I use LinearLayout#setPadding() to define the indention of each view depending of some object specific states.
This worked fine in Android 1.5. Last week I decided to move to 1.6 since it's better suitable for different screen sizes. It all worked fine, but the ListAdapter looks really weird now. The padding isn't working correctly anymore.
Does anybody know if there is a difference in the ListAdapter or setPadding implementation between Android 1.5 and Android 1.6?
Code added:
CODE:.............
Screenshot added:
I know that this elements of the list are all level 0 elements and should therefore have no padding (I used logcat to verify the level of the elements. they are all 0). the level of the elements i use in the switch case to check the padding (see code)

i have the following problem. I fill a ListView with a custom ArrayAdapter with data from a BD. However, in background, i'm updating those datas from the info provided by an API, so the idea is when the update finish, the adapter shows the updated data instead its "old version".
The problem is that when i do that, i notice a lag while the adapter is updating itself. Is the any efficient solution to avoid this?

Lets say I have 1 - 1,000 in a list and I click on 250. When I push the back button I want to go back to 250 not all the way back up to 1. Is this possible?

I've built an application that loads XML from a server, then creates a list of items and with that I create and adapter that I set with setListAdapter(my adapter);
The problem I'm having now is that creating the list and adapter takes time, so I was thinking on creating just like 20 entries and populate the list, then create the rest on runs background or maybe when the person gets to the bottom (like gmail application).

I am trying to use ListView and ListAdapter. If I create a simple Android project and add a ListView as the content view, and set it's adapter to my adapter based on ListAdapter, everything seems to work. My ListAdapter's 'getCount' is called, and I return 3, my 'getViewTypeCount' is called and I return 1, my 'getItemType' is called and I return 0, and for each item, my 'getView' is called and I return a TextView. Everything works, and the list is displayed with 3 items.
Now if I try and do the same thing in a more complicated environment, it does not work. My 'getCount', 'getViewTypeCount' and 'getItemType' methods are called, but the 'getView' method is never called and the ListView appears empty.
Now I know that I must be doing something wrong in the more complicated case, but I cannot see what it is. The code is really too involved to post here, but I was hoping that someone could give me some ideas as to why my 'getView' is never called even though I return 3 from my 'getCount' method.

I'm experimenting with the Android platform, and I'm beginning to love it, but right now I'm stuck, at this cursor/list adapter problem-thing.
The thing is, that I request a function, returning a data object, with several properties I'd like to map to different TextView's.
My list_item.xml
CODE:...........
So what I would like to do is: Map a property of an array of objects to several fields in the file.

I'm populating a list from the DB and I have a image field in the DB which contains a URL to a image file.
ListAdapter adapter=new SimpleCursorAdapter(this, R.layout.row, constantsCursor,
new String[] {"title", "subtitle", "image"}, new int[] {R.id.value, R.id.title, R.id.icon});
However, the other fields are populated, but the image remains empty. Why?

I get my Models in a nice object-oriented form. In order to bind them to my List, I have to use the listAdapter. Can I only fill this listAdapter with stupid ArrayLists? Because that means, I have to iterate over my ModelCollection and pull all the data out of my Models again. So, I detach my data from the models and I cant easily refresh the data in my listView, if something chances in the modelCollection (like becoming bigger through new Items / pagination). Does a more intelligent way exist, than I use right now? Can I bind my ModelCollection more driectly to the listView?
ModelCollection modelCollection = ModelCategory.findAll();
/*
* Prepare Data for Adapter
*/
ArrayList<String> itemTitles = new ArrayList<String>();
// Iterate over my ModelCollection and pull all the Data from each Model
for (int i = 0; i < modelCollection.items.size(); i++) {....................

I am writing a adapter for a specific app, the problem I met is:
I have only 1 listview in main.xml, and the row style is defined in file_row.xml. If I simply use list.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.file_row, R.id.file_name, items)); where items is a ArrayList<String>, everything works well.
But if I use my custom Adapter, say, list.setAdapter(new MyOwnListAdapter(this, filename)); and in the class of MyOwnListAdapter, the code has been simplified as
CODE:................
But I always met the problem which is:
CODE:.........
I thought the self-defined Adapter class actually has only one line of valid execution, which is super(context, R.layout.file_row, R.id.file_name, filename_list); It's essentially identical to direct calling of list.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.file_row, R.id.file_name, items)); Then why I always got this error if I call my own Adapter?

I need to load Contacts.Phones.CONTENT_URI and Contacts.ContactMethods.CONTENT_EMAIL_URI into a ListActivity.
Since these are separate Content URIs, I have two separate cursors and can't construct a SimpleCursorAdapter for use in the ListActivity.
The problem is that I have more than a thousand records for CONTENT_EMAIL_URI, which were automatically loaded by GMail. The app becomes unresponsive and Android prompts to kill the app or wait.
Is there a way to make the ListActivity content load in the background, like, by writing a custom implementation of android.widget.Adapter?
Or is it more feasible to use a single cursor, by manually running the SQL query on the contacts tables?

Basically, I am looking at two phones right now. The Nexus One and the HTC Incredible and I like both, the question I have is that is there a difference in the ability to root/rom these phones? I saw a few posts of people saying the Incredible would have a locked /system folder that would not allow the sort of modding freedom the Nexus One would provide. Is this true or would the phones be equally moddable (so I could remove Sense UI and play around with Cyanogen and other goodies)?

I find that the UI "Enable GPS satellites" is used to enable receiving GPS data, but not to start GPS. Which UI is used to start GPS? I am not clearly understand why android to designed GPS so. If GPS is not started, then you can't use "Enable GPS satellites" to receive any data and it is useless. I think that if the UI "Enable GPS satellites" is used to start GPS and also run the GPS thread is better? What is the trigger to start GPS?

Is there a basic guide to the main differences between versions of the Android OS?I am using a 1.6 Magic, am buying a 1.5 T-Mobile Pulse for my son and looking at a 1.6 Hero for myself early next year. I wanted to see what the differences were between 1.5 -> 1.6 -> 2.0.I assume that I have to wait for network operators to provide updated operating systems? Can the Pulse be upgraded at all? Is the Hero getting/got version 2.0?

The Eclipse build for my 1.6 application project is succeeding and the Ant build is failing. I'm looking for help on why they aren't behaving the same way.
We are developing on Mac OSX 10.5.8 with Eclipse 3.5 against SDK 1.6 + Google APIs. There are no setting changes in Eclipse, either at workspace or project level. Similarly, our ant is also a vanilla-flavored unmodified installation of 1.7.1. JDK is 1.5.0_22. The CLASSPATH environment variable is not set. JAVA_HOME is /Library/Java/Home
The application was initially created by a team member using the Eclipse plugins. The application references two jar files, one of which has a dependency on javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlSeeAlso, which is not defined anywhere in our code or in android.jar. The other jar file has an explicit dependency on android.jar. I generated the Ant build file using android update.
The Eclipse project builds an apk and runs the application in the emulator. I think this is incorrect behavior.
The Android ant project fails to build. I think this is correct behavior. MyClass.java:98: cannot access javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlSeeAlso [javac] file javax/xml/bind/annotation/XmlSeeAlso.class not found
Why the two build methods are behaving differently? I would expect them both to fail.

I was searching the internet but could not find a site comparing the two. I'm interested in developing for the android platform. G1 seems to be just the same as ADP1, but is there any small changes that will be noticeable in development?How about 3rd party software? What T-Mobile software exists in G1 which is not part of the ADP1 bundle and vice versa?Can I swap the original ADP1 firmware with T-Mobile branded one? As I understand people can already hack the G1 to run ADP1's non-branded firmware.

Wondering what the differences between REST and JSON APIs are, how you interface with them, and how to go about parsing the results. My goal is to build a small application for my android phone to tell me when the next train will get to the subway station by my house, using the developer API provided by the transit agency.
I'm learning C++ in university, but hope to go about this in Java. I'm sorry if this is more of a discussion question rather than a black and white answer question, but I can't find any information elsewhere.

I have a listview and i inflate the first position with a layout and every other position i do
another inflation with another layout.
I can do that by checking every time in getView, but as you can imagine this is not very efficient.
Can you share me your thoughts to get that result by having this pattern? (This don't get me the correct result(cause after 4-5 positions, depending of the number of positions inflated the first time, i get the layout.inside_list_2 on other positions too.)
