I'm trying to unbundle a binary file (sound1.ogg) and store it on the sdcard.So it starts out as a raw resource (R.raw.sound1) and should end up as a copy named /sdcard/ mydir/sound1.ogg I wrote a method called something like copyResourceToFile() and did a copy via file descriptors / streams. But the target file just isn't right.If I do a buffered read, the target file ends up being WAY bigger - like 10x bigger.If I just do a byte-by-byte read for the size of the original file, the target file is the right size but is not the same file. Is there a simpler (well, correct/working) way to do this thing?

I am developing a financial app that stores data in a file.I have noticed that text file i/o is pretty slow. If I switch to a binary format, how much faster will it be? 2x? 10x?I could write my own timing tests but I am hoping someone else has already done it.

I bought an android 2.3.6 phone which no one has tried to root( it seems). So I was wondering if I could root it by creating an update.zip file containing the su binary and the superuser apk and then installing it in the recovery mode. Will this work? I have failed with gingerbreak, unlockroot and z4root.

Is there a way to place widgets / views on the screen at any specific position required?
Something like a calendar with daily events that could overlap.
e.g. if every hour in a day is represented by 1 hour and there are 2 appointments that overlap partially (say 12:00 - 12:30 and 12:20 - 01:00) this would be drawn in the same row but the 12:20 one positioned slightly below the first.
Also there may be views (Image/TextView) that need to span 2 rows (i.e. 12:30 - 1:30).
I think a SurfaceView is one option (is this efficient?) but am not sure if there is some better layout that could be used.
We could use a TableLayout for the hour rows but not sure if there is a way to place overlapping widgets on this?

AFAIK accessing thumbnails for images via MediaStore.Images.Thumbnails would generate thumbnails at first attempt, and that's what i need to perform against specific location on sd card.
The question is how to make valid URI to content under specific folder?
All answers i can find use just MediaStore.Images.Thumbnails.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI as uri to make managedQuery. And result of it is Cursor that points to all sdcard images, while none examples can be found on how to access only specific folder.

In my Android app I want to have an input field with autocomplete. The number of items will be about 300000. The best solution seems to be to put the items into a file (on sdcard), one item per line, each line would have the same number of characters so that I can seek to specific line number. If the user enters something in the text field, I would binary search (via RandomAccessFile) the file and show suggestions.I want the autocomplete to be super fast (ideally under 100ms but I guess it's impossible), what optimizations I can do?
Update 1:
I will convert the users input to lowercase english characters (a-z) with spaces. So 'A/b' would be converted to 'a b' and then searched.
Uodate 2:
I now realized I need additional thing - to search for word-starting substrings.

I've tried looking around google, xda search tool, have read all pages (3 of them) in Xposed wiki. I've been trying to cheat in a game called Galaxy On Fire 2 HD (I have purchased it), I've found some tutorials how to do that on iOS by modifying some binary files (assetsdatainships.bin and items.bin), on android those files are in game apk, and I cannot modify them without breaking signature.
I found Xposed framework and I think it could be perfect for my purposes. Is there an easy way to replace those asset files by my own? I have very little programming skills though, but I'll try. I've found a short example in wiki, but I don't understand it. I've read wiki tutorial 2 times but still have only vague idea how all this works.

Is the android:id="@+id/somevalue" specific to the xml file in which it is defined, or the whole android project? If it is project-wide, it seems like I have a lot of id's to come up for text fields. For example I have to name my "title" field like "title1" and "title2" etc.

I tried to assign custom ringtones for few people. I did go to People -> click contact name that I want to change -> under Information tap, click Ringtone -> change ringtone -> After I pick custom ringtone -> Click OK button. Simple and Easy. But, when I test with another phone that I already assign ringtone, it doesn't work!
I thought that it didn't save it, but it was still pointing my custom ringtone. Well, second thought that my custom ringtone might be working, so I go to Setting -> Personalize -> change default ringtone for same MP3 file. it works! However, I couldn't make it for specific contact. Is there any thing that I did it wrong or should I turn on or off something?

I'm looking for an app that enables one to schedule recurring downloads of specific files at specific times for my Xperia Arc. It's for my morning newspaper, which is in PDF-format.
Earlier with my ZTE Blade i used Samba Filesharing, mounted the phone on my computer and put the file on the phone each morning using cron from my computer (Running Fedora). But this is not an option any more, at least not at the moment, because I have not managed to root my Xperia Arc (unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com is down for "maintenance"), and Samba Filesharing requires root.
So, basically all i need is an app that at given times each day can download a specific file (always the same name) and overwrite the old file with the new without any interaction.
Is there any app available that can do this?

This may be a stupid question, but how do I open a CSV (comma-separated values) file as a spreadsheet on my Evo? Quick Office can open an Excel file (.xls) but not CSV. ES File Explorer can open the file as text but not a spreadsheet.
Also, is there a way to associate particular file types with specific applications?

I am currently making an app which works with images. I need to implement functionality where the user picks a file stored on the SD card. Once they pick the picture (using the Android gallery), the the file-location of the image will be sent to another Activity, where other work will be done upon it. I have seen similar posts here on SD, but none to answer my question specifically. Basically this is the code I am doing when the user clicks the "Load a Picture" button:
// Create a new Intent to open the picture selector:
Intent loadPicture = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK,
android.provider.MediaStore.Images.Media.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI);
// To start it, run the startActivityForResult() method:
startActivityForResult(loadPicture, SELECT_IMAGE);
From that code, I then have a onActivityResult() method to listen to the call-back:
// If the user tried to select an image: if(requestCode == SELECT_IMAGE) {
// Check if the user actually selected an image: if(resultCode == Activity.RESULT_OK) {
// This gets the URI of the image the user selected: Uri selectedImage = data.getData();
// Create a new Intent to send to the next Activity:
Intent i = new Intent(currentActivty.this, nextActivity.class);
// - Problem Area -
// I would like to send the filename to the Intent object, and send it over.
// However, the selectedImage.toString() method will return a
// "content://" string instead of a file location. How do I get a file
// location from that URI object? i.putExtra("PICTURE_LOCATION", selectedImage.toString());
// Start the activity outlined with the Intent above: startActivity(i);
As the code above states, the uri.toString() will return a content:// string instead of the file location of the selected picture. How do I obtain the file location?
Another possible solution is to send over the content:// string and convert that into a Bitmap (which is what happens in the next Activity). However, I don't know how to do that.

I want to move some files from sdcard to /data/data/myapp/files folder, I can use OpenInputFile and OpenOutputFile and write to it, then delete the original one. But it is slow, so, I tried to use oldFile.Rename(newFile), but it always return false. Any idea? The reason I am doing this is to hide some files from my sdcard, so, nobody can see them.

I realize this isn't exactly a programming question. However I seem unable to discover this information elsewhere, so thanks if anyone can answer this. I'm on a Samsung Moment running Android 1.5.
Is there an official support forum for this type of question, or a preferred forum along the lines of ubuntuforums.org?
