I called to cancel my LAN Line phone and forgot it's a needed for the DSL connection. Now I have no internet on my computer and I really need it for my job. How can use my Sprint hero as a modem? Is there a way to do this for free without rooting? Otherwise it's $15 per month. I'm getting U Verse soon, but not for 2 weeks and I need internet on my computer ASAP.

Is there a way to use an Android as a simple pc type connection to a modem. With any cheap A$$ computer with a modem I can dial back to my router (it has a modem in the console port) with hyperterminal and log into it. Is there a way to do this while out with my G1 Android?

I am trying to use a USB GPRS (SIM5218A) modem in eclair, I am wondering how to send the AT commands to the modem. I saw some old emails here in the list showing how to use pppd with chat (exec /system/usr/bin/chat -v); Unfortunately I am unable to find chat in eclair. Is there a better way to perform this?

I am trying to develop an application that would need to AT commands that are not yet defined in the RIL. I saw from the ril.h file, that hook requests are available :
It can be invoked on the Java side from com.android.internal.telephony.Phone.invokeOemRilRequestStrings() com.android.internal.telephony.Phone.invokeOemRilRequestRaw()
But from the application side, this package is not visible (com.android.internal.telephony)
Is there anyone who bypassed this issue or is there any other way to send specific AT command to the RIL from an application?

I've got an HTC Desire which has a Mobile Hotspot App on it - so I can connect my laptop to the WiFi signal generated by my phone.I have "Unlimited Internet" with a fair-usage cap of 1GB. (such a farce, that use of the word unlimited, why don't they just say 1GB?)However, the terms and conditions explicitly disallow using the phone as a modem. My question is, can they tell, and if so, how? Surely the HTTP/HTTPS requests being sent out by the phone are exactly the same, regardless of whether it's coming from the phone or the laptop? If they aren't (perhaps some ID which says this is a phone as apposed to a different ID which will be sent by the laptop's browser), is there a way to make it look as if the requests being sent are coming from the phone?

I am on the verge of upgrading my phone, at the moment I've ditched the idea of a BB Storm because of the terrible feedback and reviews on bad signal and battery life. So I am left with the Magic or the new HTC Touch Pro " out in the next couple of weeks. I'm on Vodafone UK, i will be staying with them as they offer the best of what I need in my area. I use my phone for my business, it needs to sync with my microsoft office to take my contacts and diary with me, it needs to be able to be tethered (either usb or bluetooth) to my macbook so I can use it as a modem as I edit photographs on location and ftp or email them to clients. I do not send enough through my laptop to justify a 3G usb dongle on a separate tariff and Vodafone don't do a pay as you go dongle that will work with a mac (only the contract one works I've had a play with a Magic and it seems nice, I currently have a HTC Tytn 2(tilt) so i would have to get used to using a virtual keyboard with the Magic. The Touch Pro 2 looks sweet BUT it's big. So if the Magic could achieve what I need then it may be the phone for me. SO....my question is, can I use the magic as a modem for my macbook?

This is my first time posting on here. I just got the HTC Magic and i LOVE it. Its my first touch screen and even my mates with their iphones are starting to admit its better however i have come up with a problem. I Used to you my Sony c902i As a modem for my laptop connecting via bluethooth. However when i connected my phone to my laptop it says the only services my phone offers is a head set service. I was wondering if anyone knew of an app or something so i can do this. I have searched the app market store and cant find anything.

I am seriously thinking of buying the X10, but I need to know for sure whether it will work as a modem for my laptop. It does everything else I need, but it has to do this for me to go ahead and purchase it. Will it work as a modem with Android 1.6 and 2.1? It would be great if it could also work as a wireless hot spot, but it has to be able to do a USB tether.

Just ordered an ATT nexus one (getting rid of the pos Samsung Captivate), and I would love to root it and put on a different rom. I have no problem following the guide that is stickied, but I was wondering if z4root (z4root - Android app on AppBrain) works on the n1? I see some appbrain comments saying that it DOES work. Are there different versions of the bootloader and such that it will or will not work on? Also, which modem and kernel do you guys suggest me using (battery life is most important)?

I need to be able to get Internet in a remote area. I barely get a signal now on the captivate, if I stand on my head and rub my tummy at the same time.
Since I don't think there's a way to add an external higher gain antenna to the Captivate, I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck taking the SIM card out of the captivate and using it in a 3G USB device with any sort of an external antenna?

Is it possible to use a DroidX as a dial-up modem? I'm not talking about a cable modem or some way to get on the Internet, but rather dialing into a remote server via an analog phone connection. Examples being old-school BBSes or RAS/DUN servers.
Most if not all the Motorola Phones I've had over the years have this capability, and given the Droidx is seen by my Linux laptop as both a USB storage device and Network device is there any way to set it up as a USB modem that could accept AT commands from a terminal program and dial out to a remote modem?
