Android :: How To Keep Droid Device From Sleeping While Plugged In?
Oct 16, 2010
I'd like to keep the screen on whenever one of my Activities are running and the phone is plugged in to a power source. I know that Wakelocks are tricky, so I'm looking for an example or some documentation on how to accomplish this specific goal.

Here's my scenario. I have an app that is playing backgound sounds. Using the BroadcastReceiver I can tell when the display turns off, and then kill the sounds. I can also tell if the screen turns back on. However, if the device is in the lock state I don't want the audio to start. Therefore I wait for the ACTION_USER_PRESENT intent to signal. That all works, except that if the user turns the screen back on quickly after it was turned off, you don't get the lock screen or the ACTION_USER_PRESENT message. So, is there a way to tell, when the screen turns back on, if the device is locked or not, which I guess also means sleeping or not?

Does Android keep an internal log that is similar or identical to the log you can view with adb logcat via a Terminal window? It's difficult when my app crashes while I test it out in the field...
Any help would be great! I'm hoping Android keeps a log and there's some way I can access it. Oh, I do have root on my test device.

I need to use this for a Samsung Tablet.Usually if the device is switched-off and the USB cable is being connected the display will wake up for some seconds showing an animated battery.Instead I want to let it boot.I suspect this is close to the metal. Where do I have to make a modification? In the kernel, in the Android platform, or is this hidden in some proprietary code of the manufacturer?

I'm thinking about an Android app (with possibly an accompanying physical device), and i'm trying to figure out whether this is something that's feasible.
1) Let's say I plug my Android to my PC. Would it be possible for an app installed on the PC to communicate with an app running in the cell phone? I just need a very simplistic data exchange, it can even be one-way (just data pushed from the cell phone to the listening app on the PC, whenever the cell phone wants, I don't need any data sent from PC to phone).
When I plug it in, the phone gives me 4 options (charge, disk drive, HTC sync, tethering), which makes me think this is not doable, but still worth the shot.
2) Would it be possible for an app on the PC to talk to an app on the phone through any other way? (Wi-fi, bluetooth, etc). I'm guessing no on wi-fi since neither party has the other's IP (and I want this to kinda just work, not having to input IPs manually all the time).
3) If I make a device that's plugged to the little USB port at the bottom of the phone (and let's say this is a magical device that can do anything, I don't quite care about those details as long as it's doable). Can I have an Android app talk to that device?
4) Any other ideas to make the phone talk to a "device" that I make, or to an app in the PC are more than welcome. Going "through the web" could be an option (although there'd have to be a central server that I own as a middle man, I believe). But i'd prefer if the communication was direct between the two devices.

so I have spare parts installed and my running time is usually 100% or close to it. I'm assuming there is a stuck process or something that is keeping the phone from sleeping. Is there an easy way to find and kill it?

I've been having poor battery life with my Droid Eris and downloaded Spare Parts to find out what was the cause of it. According to Spare Parts my phone is spending nearly 86% of the time without sleeping (Nearly 10h out of the 11 1/2h since my phone was unplugged) I tried to find a possible app that was causing the problem but couldn't find anything unusual.

I am concerned my phone isnt going fully to sleep. My battery seems to drop about 20% in about 4 hours of just sitting there not doing anything. It also takes a long time before the phone idle shows up on my battery use screen. Is there anyway to check awake vs asleep times like you can on the evo?

As I continue to downlaod and try new apps, I notice that some of the permissions that some of them have are/is: "Prevent phone from sleeping". I didn't think much about it, but after conditioning my phone...for a few days I was getting around 11% awake time, now after a few of these apps after a recharge this AM I am showing 26%...before the charge my awake time was very high again. I always use Adavanced Task Killer after messing with the phone, 9/10 trials.

When I'm using my DROID to listening to music, after a minute the phone goes to sleep to save battery and it just cuts of the music. Is there a way to change it so even though its sleeping it'll still play? I'm going on a long trip soon and I don't want to have to take my iPod too.. I just want one music device so I have less chords.

It showed my phone had been running (not sleeping) for almost all 12 hours since last time unplugged. So, I methodically plugged away to try to figure out which program I was running that caused the phone not to go into sleep mode and it looks like it's Maps. I rebooted my phone, plugged in (to reset the since last unplugged timer), turned the phone off for a few minutes a checked the running time and it was normal. I started maps, plugged in, turned it off for a few minutes, then checked the running time and it was pegged at 100%. I did the process a 2nd time and got the exact same results.
In addition, I think killed Maps using System Panel and that did not fix the issue. The phone still wasn't sleeping. I wonder if maybe Maps is calling up some other process and it's the other process that's causing the phone not to go to sleep. Anyone have any ideas? Can anyone else test this as well to confirm or refute? Perhaps this is why some people are getting way better battery life than others? I'm interested to see how my battery does tomorrow........................

I followed Caddyman's instructions on what to do if the Native SMS app was keeping my phone awake all the time. After rebooting and letting it sleep for 10 minutes, my phone is still at 100%. I just got it last night so I just have Weather Bug, Handcent SMS, Facebook, Gmail, and Peep installed. I've never had a smart phone so it's possible on of the other settings is keeping it awake, but I have no clue which it would be.

While my phone is in the locked/sleep mode, occasionally the music player starts up. I'm guessing I somehow push a button to start it - but can't seem to make it happen when I try. And - I don't realize it is playing until I unlock my phone, and see the music title scrolling across the screen.

Yesterday I exchanged my Eris for a new one because the screen brightness on my old one was too dim. Now I notice that when I plug in the phone to charge, the phone stays awake. On my first phone it would just go to sleep when charging so my awake time was usually around 15-20%. When I took my new phone off the charger this morning it was up to 58% . My gf's Eris also sleeps when being charged so I'm thinking mine is the exception now. I'm thinking of calling Verizon tech support later but wanted to see if this happens to anyone else here.

My droid has been plugged in all night, today i had to take a trip to city, so I unplugged my droid and plugged it back into the cig lighter (verizon plug, not after market) and started up Trappist. Battery was full when I started, when I got to my destination an hour later the battery was at 50%. Why is it discharging if its plugged in?

So I've noticed since I've gotten my phone that even when its plugged in (100 percent battery to start) if I use navigation for 45 min or so the battery will drain to around 80 percent. I don't understand how its doing this if its plugged in and the battery has the charging icon on there.

Often my mobile network is turned off and I just use a Wi-Fi hotspot.
If the phone is not plugged in, the Wi-Fi connection will go to sleep after some length of inactivity.
I could be wrong, but a call to ConnectivityManager.getActiveNetworkInfo().isConnected() does not wake the connection.
So, what is the best way to wake the connection?
In general, I'm looking to write an isConnected() method which will return true/false, optionally blocking returning until a wakeable internet connection is awoken.

Any time I have the phone plugged in or on a docking station, the touch screen seems to go pyscho. It never seems to select the icon I want, or randomly switches screen when I touch the screen briefly or doesn't do anything at all.
Would this fall under something I should take in and deal with on warranty or is this a common thing amongst them all. I am finally just getting tired of it.

I have a Droid X and so does my GF. Both of us have obviously been adding apps, trying to figure things out, etc. quite a bit. She plugged hers in last night to charge and it turned off. We thought maybe because it was so warm from messing with it. Well, today it's turned off twice for no reason at all. Anyone else have this problem or have a recommendation? Everything seems ok on hers when we compare our two. Mine has yet to do this once?

My phone recently has stopped charging when plugged into my laptop. I have tried 3 different USB cables so i know that's not the issue. Also when I plug it in the screen lights up so I know there is some sort of connection going on, it just does not charge.

I just activated replacement Eris number two. Upon plugging it into my PC, the phone started playing a loud music track at maximum volume. When I went to adjust my volume, I found that this sound was being controlled by my ringtone volume and not media volume (interesting). I did a reboot of the phone and was greeted by the sound as soon as I plugged it in. The sound's duration is about thirty seconds.
I've plugged it into the other computer here and had the same issue. I've had it plugged into my computer for about an hour, and I have heard the music start up without notice twice so far. I did a google search as well as a search here and haven't found another user with this peculiar (if amusing/irritating) issue. I can upload a video/soundclip if wanted. I was considering rooting but I don't want to have to go to the trouble if I'm going to have to send this phone back to Verizon.
