Android :: How To Draw Canvas In Respect Of Phone Orientation?

Oct 11, 2010

There is no problem with portrait mode but when i try my app on landscape mode it doesn't look how it should.What is general approach to solve this problem.My first idea is replacing X and Y places.If i am on the right track how should i do this ? Should i use an if statement at the beginning of the onDraw() function and write entire same code twice (one for x,y and other is for y,x) ?

Android :: Draw From Old Canvas

Oct 28, 2010

I'm making an App that needs to be able to draw new graphics on top of the last set.

This is my current onDraw() method -
protected void onDraw(Canvas canvas) {
canvas.drawColor(Color.WHITE);
if(points.size() > 0) {
//do some stuff here - this is all working ok
canvas.drawLine(p1.x, p1.y, p2.x, p2.y, linePaint);
}
}

Basically, I need to draw the new graphics as a layer on top of the last, so what I'm looking for is a way to carry the image of the last canvas to the current. I have tried to figure it out myself using the canvas.setBitmap() method but it acts very funny.

Android : Way To Draw Nine Patch Onto Canvas?

Jan 24, 2010

I'm trying to draw a nine patch onto a Canvas object on the Android. What seems strange is that although I generated my nine patch using the draw9patch tool, the constructor for NinePatch requires an additional byte array called the "chunk" to construct the nine patch. Why isn't this simpler? What is the "chunk"? And if you have done this yourself, how did you go about it?

Android :: How To Increase FPS When Draw On Canvas - Now 20 - Desired 40-50

Jan 18, 2010

First I want to say that I have read many articles on this subject in this forum and on some external resources(very helpful was Robert Green's diary at www.rbgrn.net and www.droidnova.com).

However, despite all of this I want to start topic regarding FPS, and ask for advice from experienced game developers on Android platform.

My main question is "How to improve FPS when draw on Canvas?"

I have implemented simple 2D arcade game skeleton for testing purpose. Now I have ~20 FPS and want to increase this value to 40-50 FPS, if this is possible of course. I know about Open GL ES, but so far I am interested in Canvas.

In every frame I draw following stuff on the screen: - Canvas.drawColor(Color.BLACK) - to clear the screen - 1 spaceship PNG 24x24 image 1.25 kb - 5 asteroids PNG 64x64 image ~8 kb each - from 1 to 30 bullets PNG 8x8 image 299 b - 4 30x30 Rectangles - to control objects on the screen

After running my app, in logcat I can see following output data: - Average FPS: 20 (Total frames drawn: 1945 in 97 seconds) - Average onDraw: 32 ms (clear canvas: 3, draw game stuff: 26, draw controls: 1) - Average updatePhysics: 1 ms

From this output I can assume, that my main problem here is "draw game stuff" wich includes: - draw 1 spaceship - draw 5 asteroids - draw from 1 to 30 bullets

Here is my code:........................

Android :: Draw Multiple Shapes Using Loop - Canvas

Aug 7, 2010

I am very new to android development and have been trying to draw a square comprised of multiple smaller rectangles of different colours... Like a Mosaic essentially. Basically at the moment I am reading values from a file which assigns the colour to the smaller Rects. I am using a pair of nested for loops to try to draw the small Rects sequentially, line by line. However when the program finishes there is only one small Rect drawn which is the last one to be drawn and its colour corresponds to the first value read from the file. Here is some of my code to show you what I mean:

public SnapshotDraw(Context context) {
super(context);

for(int a = 0; a < 63; a++){
for(int b = 0; b < 63; b++){

Android :: Method To Draw Bitmaps Faster On Droid Canvas / OpenGL?

Jun 15, 2010

I currently have a game written using the Android canvas. It is completely 2D, and I draw bitmaps as sprites on the canvas, and it technically works, but I have a few features that I need to add that will require drawing many more bitmaps on the screen, and there will be a lot more movement.

The app needs more power.

What is the best way to go from this method of drawing Bitmaps on a canvas to using OpenGL so I can draw them faster?

Android :: Orientation Change - Dialog Above Activity With Fixed Orientation

May 14, 2009

I have created an activity for my game which handles all orientation changes by itself and has a fixed "portrait" layout. Actually it uses the accelerometer and is rendered using 2D canvas methods. If the level has been completed I show up a highscore dialog in which the user can enter his name. The dialog is floating above the underlying level screen which gets blurred out nicely. This generally works.

Problem is that the dialog does not get rotated if the orientation of the phone changes. So even if the keyboard is exposed the dialog is shown in portrait mode instead of landscape. I have tried to use an activity with dialog theme instead but the behavior didn't change. After several tries it seems that I have found the reason for this: Once there's an activity with fixed orientation in the activity stack then all subsequent activities keep this orientation, too. They will not react on orientation changes anymore (e.g. if the keyboard gets exposed).

After upgrading to 1.5 SDK the described behavior changed a little bit. Now at subactivities indead react on orientation changes like expected. However, the need to have an opaque background! That means that neither dialogs nor activities with dialog theme will work. Those will stick with the orientation of the underlaying activity. So my workaround is to first start a sub-activity with an opaque black background. This activity then shows my highscore dialog on top. It looks quite okay but I wonder if there's a better solution? Is it possible to show a dialog above a fixed portrait or landscape activity which automatically adapts to orientation changes?

Android :: Runs Phone Game Using Canvas Porting To OpenGL

Jun 18, 2009

My game runs fairly well on my phone, but i want to increase the performance by using opengl. However currently i use the Canvas. I am a beginner in opengl. I have to port all my drawing code to opengl. However can somebody give me directions. For example how do i do the following in opengl:

c.save();c.scale(0.3f+scale, 0.3f+scale, width/2, height/2) c.drawBitmap( bMsg.bitmap, width/2 - bMsg.bitmap.getWidth()/2,dy+height/2 - bMsg.bitmap.getHeight()/2, MESSAGE_PAINT);c.restore();

And why cant i just use Canvas as an abstraction layer (facade) for opengl. An implementation of canvas could call the correct opengl methods in order to render. Why do i have to port all my code. I thought the canvas was a good abstraction interface to a drawing surface, why do i have to bother with opengl? It looks like this is possible, when is see the following contructor: "public Canvas (GL gl)" Also the this seems usefull. SURFACE_TYPE_GPU Surface type: creates a surface suited to be used with the GPU So what should i do? Re implementing the GamePainter completely and call opengl functions directly? Or is there some kind of abstraction mechanism, so that i can use OpenGL with just a few lines of code?

Android :: Using Orientation Sensor To Get 360° Orientation

Jul 17, 2009

I have a problem with working with the ORIENTATION values of the SensorManager. I would like to have some kind of 360°-value which directly shows me if the phone is in normal portrait (0°), landscape, portrait turned around (180°) or anything in between. So I could have, for example, an arrow that points to the floor (like gravity would do with a plummet) all the time, no matter how I tilt (sidewards) the phone. I thought this would be easy, but I'm pretty confused at the moment.

First of all, the X value of the orientation-array seems to correspondent with how I turn the phone, BUT: if it's completely uprightly standing, this value is about 60° ... why not 0° (or 90°, 180°, 270°), as I would expect?

Second: The value resets if I turn the phone and Android automatically changes screen orientation. So both in Portrait and in Landscape mode it will be sth. like 60° when the phone is in a 0° angel in real world. I set "android:screenOrientation" to "landscape" but this doesn't help anything :/

I want the app NOT to change orientation when I turn the phone, but I want it to get a continuous orientation value when I tilt the phone.
