I've gone through a few guides and tutorials, and they're quite clear on how to start an activity (with intent). However, how do I create a new activity in Eclipse? I can probably do this by hand by then I have to modify the R file which is auto-generated. I can create a new XML layout.

When a TabWidget is using intents to designate the target Activity for each tab, is there any special handling of those Activities on the Activity Stack outside of the default operation? For Instance, if my app has tabs A, B, and C, and I click them in this order--A, B, A, C, A, B--how will the Activity stack change? My understanding of the default operation, if startActivity() is called each time on the intent, would have the Stack keep loading up new instances of the activities: A, AB, ABA, ABAC, ABACA, ABACAB It's hard to believe that's how it works though... Seems like it would be a waste of resources and could be endless. Can anyone tell me how this will actually work?

I am working on developing an app and I am not sure when should I use a new activity and when should I update the existing view.
For example, lets say I have a view that shows a multiple choice question.Now, when the user selects his choices and clicks on say "Evaluate", I want to show the same question view but along with the right answers and explanations for each option. So does that mean, I should send an Intent upon a click on Evaluate or I should just update the view (i am not sure how)?
If I send an intent and show a new screen, how can the user go back to the next question without displaying the answers? If I don't create an new activity, how can I update the existing view that is already displayed?
I checked out cupcake branch yesterday and made the full build and sdk successfully, and I also built the ADT 0.9 with the command cupcake/development/tools/eclipse/scripts /build_ server.sh on another Linux box. Then I updated the ADT 0.9 and set new SDK on Eclipse. Then I created a simple Android project Test with Android Project Wizard, the Eclipse created project files except the R.java and then reported following errors. View 15 Replies View RelatedFor some unknown reason when I now try to create a new Android project in Eclipse (Ganymede running on Windows) it fails to link to the android.jar in the SDK (1.0_r1). This has never happened before, and all my existing projects continue to resolve Android components just fine.
Error: "Cannot create linked resource '/.org.eclipse.jdt.core.external.folders/.link0'. The parent resource is not accessible."
I installed JavaEE, JDK, Eclipse 3.5.x (Galileo), the Android Starter SDK, and the current ADT all with no problems. However, when I try to walk through the 'Hello Android' tutorial, I bring up the New Android Project wizard, fill it in and hit 'Finish'.
After a moment, it comes back with a message saying there was a problem at path X:so and so (access denied).
Things to note:
-Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
-Quadcore Pentium with 8GB RAM, 8TB NAS
-I am an Administrator
-I have also tried this by activating the full (hidden) Administrator profile
-I have reinstalled everything 8 or 9 times
-I have changed ownership & permissions all over the place
-I have launched eclipse in 'Run as Administrator' Mode
-I have installed Everything as 32-bit, as others have done this successfully
Eclipse creates the folder it's having a problem with, but then cannot work with the .project file it creates (access denied). It then can't save anything so there is nothing but an empty folder 'Hello_Android' on the left within Eclipse.
Anybody have any clues about what is going on-- I'm frustrated. I want to get into this, and I've looked EVERYWHERE on the net trying to crack this nut....

I followed these tutorials to set up a Hello World Android app. But when I create a new java project I can't select a build target. It just says no targets available in the target selection box. I have confirmed that I am not having the UI issue described here (http://blog.rowancrane.com/2009/12/27/eclipse-new-android-project-cant-select-build-type-target), I actually have a message in the box saying there are no targets instead of an empty box. I also am using 1920x1080 res.
I'm guessing that eclipse is just not aware of my Android Targets? I installed them in the android SDK manager and see them listed under installed packages in the Android SDK manager (1.1, 1.6, ..., 2.2)

It said' You may need to open the Debug perspective (next to the "Java" perspective icon in the upper-right, click the small "Open Perspective" icon and select "Debug"). Once you do, you should see a list of threads; if you select one and break it (by clicking the "pause" icon), it should show the stack trace, source file, and line where execution is at. Breakpoints and whatnot should all work.
My question is which threads I need to select in order to debug Launcher Activity? I don't see a thread name Launcher.

I am having a similar problem on WinXP with Eclipse w/ ADT plugin. Why would the activity not be able to start on the emulator? The computer has 756MB RAM if that could be the problem. The deployment is going along until Eclipse tries to deploy the activity. The emulator starts with the text "ANDROID_" and then eventually just displays the ANDROID logo, though appears to still be running just fine. Any ideas? Thanks. Here's my use case: The app starts at a login screen. You enter your credentials and hit the "Login" button. Then a progress dialog appears and you wait for some stuff to download. Once the stuff has downloaded, you are taken to a new activity. Exactly which activity you are taken to depends on the server response.
Here's my problem: If you go HOME during this login/download process, at some point in the near future your download will complete and will invoke startActivity(). So then the new activity will be pushed to the foreground, rudely interrupting the user. I can't start the activity before I start the download, because, as I mentioned earlier, the activity I start depends on the result of the download.
I would obviously not like to interrupt the user like this. One way to solve this is to refrain from calling startActivity() until the user returns to the app. I can do this by keeping track of the LoginActivity's onStop() and onRestart(). But I'm wondering, is there any way to create the activity while it is in the background? That way the user returns to the app and he is ready to go. otherwise he would have to wait for the new activity to be created (which could take some time because the new activity also has to download and display some data). Update: Guess what? I LIED! I could have sworn that starting this activity was causing it to come to the foreground, but I went back to test it again and the problem has magically disappeared. I tested in both 1.6 and 2.0.1 and both OSes were smart enough not to bring a backgrounded task to the front.
Once upon a time (Android 1.5 and earlier), when you would create a new project using the "android create project" command, it worked well -- you had an app that could immediately be compiled and installed.
Now, though, when you run that command, a number of places need fixing up, where ACTIVITY_NAME shows up instead of the activity name specified...depending on the API level you target.
For example:

If I change the target to 1, 3, or 4, it works as expected. If I have the target as 2 or 5, it gives me the ACTIVITY_NAME.
So, I'm curious to know if:
a. This is a bug, or

I've used this tutorial: http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/ApiDemos/src/com/examp... The issue is that there are always some dividers missing whenever I run the example. The dividers are disappearing/appearing and flickering as i scroll the list (tested in emulator and HTC Tattoo).
