I've seen some answers to questions about how to specify a custom layout for a spinner's pop-up list, but what I want to do is to customize the text on the Spinner control itself, such the "setText..." methods that you can call for a Button (TextView subclass). Is there any way to do this? What I'm trying to do is to make my own Spinner design as I have for some of the other controls so it takes up less space and matches the general look of my app.

For a widget I am creating for the Android OS, I want the user to first select a certain option from a Spinner. Just like when you add a shortcut to the homescreen.
Is that possible or do you have to start an Activity? If it is possible, can anyone explain how to do it?

I successfully binded a spinner widget to a simple cursor adapter, but I started having problems when I tried to add a new item to the table which feeds the spinner by clicking an "add new item" button. The idea was to launch a new activity which returns the rowid of the just added element, and use it to set the new position.
What I basically did is to implement something like:
break; in the "onActivityResult" method, the rowid has the correct value but setSelection has no effect. I also tried to force the argument to some other values, but still with no result. If I call it in the onCreate method, it works beautifully. Moreover, I am still not sure that setSelection is the right method to call, since its arg is named "position" in the doc, while I am passing an "id".

Here is what I want to do:
Category 1:

How can i change these color? Is spinner uses list view or some other as parent to populate items in spinner?
If so can i change the separator background of parent view?

I use this code to generate a spinner in my app:
code:.........
On my device (Motorola Milestone) and in the emulator this looks like the standard gray spinner widget.
On of my colleagues uses a Motorola Backflip and on his device the Spinner is black. Now its very hard to read the font in the spinner.
What do I have to do to use my own view for the spinner? I don't mind to have the gray spinner on all devices, but it should always look the same on all devices.

I have a spinner 'aperture' set up with a list of numbers, and a spinner 'mode' with two options. When a button is pushed I need a calculation to run using various inputs, including the current selection from 'aperture' and a value derived from 'mode'. How do I call the value of a spinner so I can use it in a calculation?
Also, how do I use the spinner 'mode's selection to set this other value before implimenting it in the calculation? To be more specific, if the spinner is set to Small then the value I use in the calculation is 0.015, whereas if Large is selected I need to use 0.028
My other inputs are EditText views, so right now I am set up like this:
CODE:............
That is not the actual equation, it is just a test to make sure everything connects properly. How would I call the value of spinner 'aperture' and the Small/Large spinner 'mode'

I have a selection for some items using a spinner widget. At the moment the spinner will load a simple Textview and show the name of the item.It is possible to define an own view to show inside the spinner row? I would suspect it being similar to a custom List row.I simply want to show an individual icon left from the spinner text for each item in the list.

I have a spinner widget in my activity which lets users pick a list name.
Normally, the function of the spinner is to switch between lists but for a couple of instances, I swap out the selection change listener to perform a different function with the same list of options. Once the selection has been made, the old listener is restored and life goes on.
This is a bad and buggy arrangement. Instead, I would like to have a function that just takes a selection listener and some other parameters and shows a popup list that's populated by the same cursor (or and identical cursor) as the spinner, without using the spinner itself.
Is there any way I can do this?

I am trying to populate a spinner depending on another spinner's selected item, my code is the following:
CODE:.................
what is intriguing me is that the first spinner onitemselection works perfectly ( I can see the values in LogCat) then when I change selection of the 2nd spinner I am gettging an error on this line: String selected= (String) s2.getSelectedItem(); So the compiler gets insisde then onItemSelected function of the 2nd spinner but throws an Handler exceltion on s2.getSelectedItem()
why? it works perfectly for the 1st spinner.

I am developing an application that needs to extend the functionality of the android search bar. Basically I need to show a bitmap image for each suggestion. The current implementation of the search bar enables to show resource icons (with Search Manager.SUGGEST_COLUMN_ICON_1 and Search Manager.SUGGEST_COLUMN_ICON_2). I don't see the way to customize the native search dialog. I think it is not a good idea to create my search component. I found an old entry in this group, but it doesn't have any answer (HTTP:// www.mail-archive.com/android-developers@googlegroups.com/msg31090.html). Basically the question is the same: "is the search UI customizable at all"?

Just bought my droid and LOVIN' IT...but I'm looking to tweak it a little more. So far, I'm really digging' the home screens that a lot of you guys have posted on this site, and I'm trying to emulate them but it's a little difficult for me to do. I'd really appreciate it if you guys can lead me to the right direction on which apps and customizations I need to employ to get those similar settings. I'm mainly looking to do 2 things:
1.) get my home screen to have the time, date, and weather widget, while putting my favorite icons around it for this I downloaded Home++ and weather forecast widgets v2. However, I really don't like how the default time and date and bottom icons look that comes with the Home++. A lot of you guys have the screen that looks like the HTC Sense UI. It's awesome! How can I get my droid to look like this???
2.) I'm currently employing the 3 screen setting (which I like). I would like to put a full size calendar on the left screen so that I can flick it over whenever I need to take a look. Is this possible? And is there an app/widget that can do this?

In all the examples I've found to manipulate each view in a ListView, the method always seems to be getView(). But these were never Adapters backed by a cursor. I decided to try bindView() within a SimpleCursorAdapter, and so far it works very nicely, especially with the cursor all set up for my use.
My question is, is this usage good practice, and could I run into a problem in future? My question may be dumb but I just couldn't find a good example code snippet that uses a cursor.
