Android :: Hierarchyviewer Tool Missing In SDK Installation / Get It?
Oct 28, 2010
I'm looking for "hierarchyviewer" tool, but it's missing in my SDK installation.
Is "hierarchyviewer" part of Android SDK or there's something else I need to install on top of SDK to get it?

When I look at all the views in HierarchyViewer, why there are multiple views's 'hasFocus' is true? I am under the assumption that only 1 view can have focus at a time. If so, why there are multiple view's hasFocus be true?

i got this new mobilephone this week in Germany, wanted to debug my program on the device. but it doesn't work, "c:> adb devices" lists no device attached, though i have tried to change the "android_usb.inf" in order to install the usb driver from SDK. i added some entries as follows: under [Google.NTx86] HTC DREAM ; SAMSUNG GALAXY %USBVID_04E8&PID_6640. DeviceDescRelease%=androidusb.Dev, USB VID_04E8&PID_6640 %USBVID_04E8&PID_ 6640&MI _01.DeviceDescRelease%=androidusb.Dev, USB VID_04E8&PID_6640&MI_01 %USBVID_04E8&PID _6640.Device DescRelease%= androidusb.Dev, USB VID_04E8&PID_6640 and [Strings]: SBVID_04E8&PID_6640. DeviceDescRelease= "SAMSUNG GALAXY" USBVID_04E8& DIP&MI_01.Device DescRelease="SAMSUNG GALAXY Composite ADB Interface" USBVID_ 04E8&PID _6640. DeviceDesc Release="SAMSUNG GALAXY Bootloader" i got only one VID and one PID through USBVIEW, though for HTC DREAM there are different PIDs used. The adb interface got installed, but adb just didn't work.

I'm unable to find the AIDL tool in my OSX install. My tools directory does not have AIDL, but it has everything else (Adb, android, ddms, etc). I've tried opening the SDK and AVD manager and reinstalling the Android SDK Tools Rev 7, no luck. Any idea on how I can get a hold of the tool? Is there a separate download I can use?

I am doing a debug key and I can't. I am stuck here:
"Once you have located the keystore, use this Keytool command to get the MD5 fingerprint of the debug certificate:
$ keytool -list -alias androiddebugkey
-keystore .keystore
-storepass android -keypass android"
I located my keystore, but I don't know how to put that order. I think that order is for linux, and I am using windows XP Professional.

So from my understanding each application normally gets 16 mb memory to work with. This is what is shown on the heap tool for eclipse:
Heap Size: 4.5 mb
Allocated: 3.2 mb
Free : 1.5 mb
Used : 66.7%
Which one is the total memory being used? Heap size, or Allocated?

I downloaded the SDK 2.0 toolkit and tried to launch the android tool to download the latest SDK. The application seems to launch with the following output:
$ ./android-sdk-mac/tools/android Starting Android SDK and AVD Manager No command line parameters provided, launching UI. See 'android --help' for operations from the command line. $
That's it. Nothing happens, no UI appears or any processes are started (check with ps, but there is no new java process). I'm running this on Mac OS X 10.5.8. The previous SDK s runs fine.

Is there a tool or a way within Android to select and unlink multiple contacts? I've been syncing my Captivate using Kies for while, but after a Kies software upgrade I had to reload the drivers (using Kies) as the Captivate was not connecting. After the driver reload I was able to sync my contacts, but I ended up with duplicates of all my contacts under the "Unassigned" group. I can not delete these duplicates under this group because they're linked to the duplicate contacts that I had already assigned to specific groups. If I delete any contact in the "Unassigned" group it also deletes the contact I want to keep under its respective group. I have over 1,500 contacts so unlinking one by one is very time consuming and not practical.

I was looking for a Windows based tool that can make a complete backup image of my SD card (just didn't want to lose 13gb worth of photos and music). I tried the native Windows backup program, Ghost, and just about every other backup solution with no luck. I did run into a free program called "USB Image Tool" and it does just what I need. Once you mount your SD card on your phone, this little program will allow you to create an IMG image and also has restore functions. It is located at:

In Android we can get the signatures of a package with
getPackageManager().getPackageInfo(packageName, PackageManager.GET_SIGNATURES).signatures;
We can print a signature by calling
signatures.toCharsString();
How to get the same string with jarsigner or another tool from the APK file ?

Can anyone suggest me a good tool to quickly understand a reasonably big Android project: the class hierarchies, relations and methods via some visual means? Is some kind of plugin available that we can point it to the android project and it would create a package diagram? I know a bit about "yDoc" & "ObjectAid"

My open source Android application has internationalization done the Android way, with strings.xml files.
The community has many people from many countries, and they are willing to contribute/improve translations using a collaborative website.
There is Launchpad but it only supports the gettext format so we would have to use scripts, not very convenient.
There is Crowdin but somehow this website seems dead, nearly no projects, and the download links do not work. Actually we started using Crowdin but all download links fail to give any strings.xml file back, see here.
What website is convenient for translating open source Android applications?

I am using Ubuntu (newbie) and I installed JRE, JDK and Android-SDK knowing that this is what I need to start developing android apps. However, I noticed that platform-tools directory is missing. According to some articles that I read, I need to run the android tool inside the "Tools" folder to get a copy of the missing folder. But when I try to run "android" tool, it gives me this error "android: Command not found". I did not do anything aside from installing JRE, JDK and Android-SDK.

I am looking for an offline synchronizing tool/app/client for android devices.It can be used to take backup of
1. Contacts
2.Messages
3.Photos & Videos
4.Calender.
It should be able to backup this data using one or more of these:
1.USB
2.WIFI
3.BLUETOOTH
4.HTTP
Also, I am looking for such a tool specifically for Linux machines.The reason for this is to avoid sending data to the cloud during backup for privacy reasons. Actually I am developing such a cross platform compatible offline synchronizing tool myself. But I want to know if this already exists.

Totalcare is back on Android Market.The software basically is a hidden app that once installed and activated, runs a service at background which can't be stopped. The service will listen for SMS' from either of 2 control phones set during the activation procedure and will invoke methods accordingly. SMS commands are quite simple and is followed by a 5-Digit PIN Code which is set during the activation method. The software is free for testing purpose. Its still in beta state and we're quite sure its stable. We've tested the product several times on multiple devices without any failure or bug. We've tried using the latest API's of android so that it can be compatible with the latest devices. The software won't work below API Level 4 (Android 1.6). I haven't tested it on 1.6 either since i've only 2.1 available here. Please try it and let me know if it works.The app can be used as a remote mobile management or anti-theft.Very useful in certain situations, like if you drop your phone somewhere, you can find it using the location fetching features. Maybe you left your phone somewhere in silent mode, just send an sms to make it sound loud and find your phone. several such other features.
