Android :: Google Voice & Verizon Visual Voicemail Concerns
Sep 9, 2010
I'm running the original Motorola Droid with Android v2.2.I'm sure this has been brought up in the past, but I've searched and can't find any real good answers.I've had Google Voice for about a year now on my Droid. Here are some concerns I have:
1) It uses anytime minutes when someone is leaving a message.
2) Often it doesn't know when the caller has hung up and eats up additional minutes recording only silence.
3) With the in-call volume maxed out I can barely hear the voicemail through the handset speaker.
For a couple months last year I had Verizon Visual Voicemail and these were the concerns I had:
1) It costs $2.99/month (but doesn't use anytime minutes)
2) Like Google Voice, with the in-call volume maxed out I can barely hear the voicemail through the handset speaker.
3) Notification of voicemails was nowhere near as quick as regular voicemail or Google Voice.
My biggest question right now for both of them- Is there any way to get the in-call volume fixed when listening to messages? Anyone else having these issues? It's important for me that voicemail volume is good and notification is quick. I can't seem to find a visual voicemail option that hits all the nails on the head.

How can I setup google Voice to be used just for Visual Voicemail? I know it can be done but not sure how to set it up or use it. I still want to use my Verizon phone number for eveything, just use GV for VV. Also I am with Verizon will this cost anymore?

I've been using Google Voice for my VM for about a month and a half now with no problems. But every once in a while, I wake up with a notification from the Verizon Visual Voicemail program. There are no new VMs, but it's annoying all the same. Is there a way to stop this, or do I just have to remove the program completely?

I need some help with the various visual voicemail services. I've done some searches and can't find what I'm looking for. All I want is to have my voicemails transcribed and available to be read, or even sent to an email or text or whatever.
What is the best service? Google Voice? Youmail? Will I have to change my outgoing message to set up the service? (in other words, will it affect those people calling me? Will they be able to tell?)
Finally, if I buy a Google Voice Invite, can I JUST use the visual voicemail feature? I have no need for the other features it offers.

I got a Google Voice invite about a week ago, and while I mainly just wanted the voicemail perks, I went for the new number, just so I could have all the bells and whistles when I eventually need them.
In the meantime, however, rather than let the account sit idle, I really wanted to figure out how to use the Voice visual voicemail for my Verizon line. I was on an iPhone for almost two years--I'm never going to go without visual voicemail again. But I'm not paying Verizon for it, the third-party apps I've tried all had enough annoying traits to drive me away, and hot damn, inaccurate as it may be, I want voicemail transcription if only for the comedic benefits of reading the mad-lib transcriptions of friends' voicemails.
So, anyway, I finally stumbled across this post on the Google forums, giving a step-by-step procedure to redirect your missed/ignored/busy calls to your google voice account. (Basically, you make three calls using prefixes and your google voice number to set the redirects... the instructions also include all of the codes to undo all the redirects if/when you decide to go back to normal.) I tried it out, it took all 60 seconds to set up, and it works beautifully.
Depending on how your voice account is set up, you may need to adjust some settings (so you don't get an email, text, AND google voice notification every time you get a voicemail, which I quickly discovered was quite annoying).
Again, this only works if you have a Google Voice account, with a new number (but then, if you got GV for an existing number, you wouldn't have to go through all this).

I was having some issues with Google Voice (people saying that they didn't always get my voicemail or sometimes it was some automated thing instead of my Google Voice message). I can't afford not getting my voice messages so I want to switch back. However, now whenever I get a voicemail it shows up in my notification bar and I click on the notification and it automatically calls a google voice number. However, when I enter my pin it says I have no messages. So I'm assuming they are on my Verizon Voicemail. But I can't get to them. I finally figured out that in settings you have to then go to the Call menu and change the Voicemail Service back to "My carrier" from Google Voice. But then the Voicemail Number stills shows as the google voice number. What is the number to change it to for Verizon Voicemail? Will that take care of it and allow me to check the 3 unheard messages and then get all of my messages from here on out?

Ordered my DX on Friday, phone is currently in route and will be in my hands tomorrow via Fed Ex.One question visual voicemail isn't a free feature with Verizon!? I'm coming from AT&T and iPhone, never had to pay for visual voicemail. I called into VZW they said it's a $2.99/month add-on, really?Who uses VVM and who doesn't?I know there was an app for the Incredible that would push your voicemails so you can boot the app and use it just like VVM, any good ones for the X?

Saw the other thread, but didn't want to hijack with a different question.
Is the voicemail application inside of the messages application actually Verizon's Visual Voicemail? I saw on the market that there was an app for VVM, nd the interface looks different. I just want to make sure I'm using the right app and not using minutes and paying for VVM at the same time. Sorry if this is a dumb question and thanks in advance for help.

I am joining the Captivate crowd. Currently browsing deals (frustratingly, most won't allow me to choose the small plan I require).
I read a few places that you can't use voice command/control when the phone is on bluetooth. Has there been any change to this since it was first released?
My car stereo is equipped to use a phone via bluetooth, with a microphone mounted by the rear view mirror. I live for this at times, but voice dialing would be 10x more helpful than scrolling through contacts on the stereo screen.
Also, I'd love to know if you can legitimately get visual voicemail without paying a monthly fee? At least for now, I want to keep the phone legit and not mess with warranty, etc.
I'm obviously asking for a brand new phone - as of right now, not "well, when it was released x, y, z" as I think sometimes things change quickly with phones.

how realiable is your gvvm? I just switched to it from verizons version and it seems like i'm not getting all my messages. Sometimes i'll have voicemails that play nothing for a long time, some will start in the middle of the conversation, etc. What annoys me the most is that sometimes it seems it will go to the verizon voicemail box as I'll get a text from verizon stating i have a voicemail.Anyone else have that problem?

I tried searching for the question I'm about to ask and didn't find any threads so here it goes. Can someone post the steps to setting up Google Voice as visual voice mail for the Captivate? I know it's probably something very simple but I just can't figure it out ( yes, I'm a bit slow ).

I got the Droid yesterday, and I'm trying to use Google Voice *just* for voicemail. However, it seems like I never get notifications about new voicemail, unless the app is open. Also, recorded voicemail is very soft when it's played back, almost too soft to hear.

I have a GV account that I don't really use much, but I am familiar with the system. I know they also offer just VM so you can keep your current cell #. What I want to know is, what do people think about the Sprint visual voicemail that comes on the Hero as it compares to google's VM. Besides transcription, are there any benefits? Are there any downsides?

Just got G-Voice and at this point, all I want to do is use it for visual voicemail. During setup, it asked me if I wanted to use my carrier's service or Google's service. I chose Google at which point I had to call a provided number that seems to initiate forwarding?
Anyway, just wondering what would happen if I choose Verizon's service instead of Google? Do you still get visual voicemail?

For my work voicemail, I have to call in.
I have it programmed in my contacts (or I did on my old BB) with the pauses and password pre-entered
However, with Google Voice, this doesn't work; when I have it programmed in, GV just calls my GV voicemail...
I can turn google voice off, or change it to 'ask every time', but really don't want to.....

Does the GMail app play Google Voice voicemail messages for you all? Because when I click the "play message" link, it just opens my browser and prompts me to save "voicemail.mp3". What I want to know is... did I mess up my settings somehow, or is this how the GMail app treats Google Voice voicemail messages for everyone?

I can't get my EVO to use my google voice as my voicemail. I have everything set up correctly and have my voicemail assigned to google instead of sprint. When I try to activate my google on my phone by dialing the *28 and my number, it either gives my an error code or just rings. Does sprint allow google as your voicemail?

I set up Google Voice on my Sprint Hero and I'm not all that happy with it. The main problem is it takes roughly 3 hours from the time the person left the voicemail until I receive it on my phone. That's just way too long. And I'm not talking just the transcription, I mean even getting the voicemail. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it a Sprint problem, a Hero problem, or a Google Voice problem?

I'm having a problem that just started today for some reason (maybe I messed something up).I've been using Google Voice for texting as well as sending/receiving phone calls. Up until today, whenever I got a text message it notified me through Google Voice app on my phone. The same thing with voicemails. But what happened today is that it isn't notifying me for some reason. To actually "receive" the text messages and voicemails through Voice, I have to go into Google Voice app and hit "refresh".Under "sync and notifications" for settings in Voice, I have "synchronize inbox" checked as well as "inbox notifications" so that I'm notified in the status bar when new items arrive. And like I said, up until today it was working flawlessly, but now I have to hit "refresh" to receive them in Voice.

Searched for this but didn't find anything. I have my GV voicemail set up to go directly to my voicemail box (no pin) when dialing voicemail from my phone. I have everything configured correctly on the GV site and on my phone (dialed the *71GVNumber). When I call my voicemail it just rings and I have to press * to get to the PIN prompt. Is there something different about the Incredible that this doesn't work correctly? I had this correctly setup on my Storm2.

I am having a hard time deciding for my HTC Hero.
Google Voice
Pro's
Transcribed Voicemails (Usually not that good, but a neat feature to have)
Saved Voicemails that don't have to be deleted after a couple weeks
E-mail or SMS notifications (I don't use it, but my voicemail app doesn't do that)
Con's
Wastes battery with notifications and having to download Voicemails to listen to them.
Stock Voicemail Application
Pro's
Doesn't waste battery life for having notifications of a new voicemail.
Implemented into the phone automatically
Instant notification without wasting battery, etc.
Con's
Lacks a lot of features
Not useful at all.
I can disable Google Voice whenever, which isn't the problem. But, I am having a hard time deciding.

So I set up Google Voice to be my voicemail provider on my phone.
Twice.
The first time I did it directly on the site and followed the instructions.....THEN I went to the phone and actually changed it in the Voicemail provider settings (there is a spot for it)
When called it still made me put in my voicemail #.
So I started the process over again.
This time I set up my verizon voice mail with the phone number and the ",****" for the pause and the password. Then i told it to use google voicemail.
Then I went into google voicemail and set up the phone again.
And....
Voila....it automatically puts in my password for me now. Although on the phone it doesn't show that its there at all.
There doesn't seem to be a reason to switch the setting on the phone as the voicemail indicator in "messages" doesn't change.....and also It doesn't seem to be able to set up the true visual voicemail through it.
You have to use the Google Voice app to get them and just search through your mails. (If anyone has a way around that one I'd be grateful - for both the message indicator and the visual voicemail)

I am currently using Google Voice for my Visual Voicemail. When someone leaves a voicemail, I get about 5 notification sounds in a row! It's so annoying. I bascially get a couple of email notifications, a message notification, etc. Is there a way where it only makes one notification sound and just shows that you have a new voicemail? I don't need a bunch of things going off at once.

So I have had Google Voice for the past month or so. I have had several people call me and I let it go to Voicemail and then they later tell me that the voicemail wouldn't work for them. They say they don't get my message and instead get some form of automated message that cuts out about halfway through and then ends the call.

I just got GV today and I'm trying to set up the customized voicemail greeting to certain groups and not having any luck. I made the greeting, it plays properly in the GV settings in a browser but when I test it from a phone in that group it stays as the default "The Google Voice subscriber you are trying to reach is unavailable..."
