Nov 3, 2010I am on Android 2.1 and I have one multi column Custom listview Using BaseAdapter with an editable edittext at the end of the listview. If the data in the listview do not contain the data of user choice then user should be able to enter data. If the data is already there in the list user will be able to select the data using custom selector. If a selection is made in the list view and user wanted to enter data in the text field at the bottom after selection then the marker in the list view should be unselected. I tried to use onclick() method on edit text using click listener. First time when it is clicked, edit text is getting focus and onclick() method is not fired. And when it is clicked second time, onclick() method is fired and notifyDataSetChanged() method is called. I tried to call the notifyDataSetChanged() method from the Focus Listener, list view selection is gone in my first attempt and edit text is not receiving any data input from the keyboard (frozen).

Also if in any way Android code is similar, then will it be hard to bring the iPhone (Xcode) files, or copy and paste my iPhone code into the Android code.

Nov 13, 2010Does anyone know of a way to get your 'All Apps' screen to be a fixed multi page view rather than a scrolling list. When it's a scrolling list, it's hard to find what you are looking for quickly, as you first have to work out where you are on the list, then scroll to the required area of the list and find the app (which is always on a different place on the screen as the list moves (ie sometimes it could be at the top, sometimes at the bottom, somtimes in the middle).
On a fixed multi page view, you only need to work out which page you're on, then the app you are looking for will be in a fixed place on it's page (i.e. always top right spot on page 2). I appreciate that this is not a huge time-saving issue, but it would be helpful for me, and sometimes those few extra seconds why trying to find the 'messaging' app can be a pain in the neck. I downloaded some nice wall papers so at the moment am trying out having very clean homescreens, hence using the 'all apps' a lot more.

Jun 5, 2010I have a TabActivity with several tabs. Each tab corresponds to a specific view, and those views may further switch to other views. For example, one of my tabs displays RSS feed list, after user clicks one of the RSS feed, it will switch to a view displaying a list of articles, and after user clicks one of the titles, a full article view will be displayed.I'm going to add support for "back" button in my application. For instance, in a full article view, after user presses the "back" button, it should switch back to the article list view. And if user presses it the "back" button again, my application should switch back to the feed list view.My idea is to maintain a Stack<View> during navigation, and every time user presses the "back" button, the program will pop a View out of the stack, and set it as the current view. But I would like to know how to set current view in TabHost.

Mar 29, 2010I started my emulator with ./emulator -trace profile -avd emulator_15. I then tracked down the trace files to ~/.android/avd/rodgers_emulator_15.avd/traces/profile, where there are six files: qtrace.bb, qtrace.exc, qtrace.insn, qtrace.method, qtrace.pid, qtrace.static. I can't figure out what to do with these files. I've tried both dmtracedump and traceview on all of the files, but none seem to generate any output I can do anything with.
How can I view the proportion of time taken by native method calls on Android?

Unfortunately attribute android:inputType="number|numberSigned| numberDecimal" doesn't hide @, #, $ etc. keys.
How can I customize the soft keyboard view? I actually need to show and react to my custom view. What is is the fast and right way to implement it?

Feb 1, 2012If you look at the Android documentation about how to implement a List View and populate it you will notice that they only teach you how to do it in Java extending ListActivity instead of the normal Activity, but how would the same code (layout and populate the list) using XML layout files and extending Activity?
I'm asking this because I want to implement a RelativeLayout and add more elements to the screen where the ListView is with more flexibility than using .inflate() and addHeaderView()/addFooterView().
Android :: Extracting Activity Code And Creating Graph View Class
Mar 1, 2010I had a bunch of code in an activity that displays a running graph of some external data. As the activity code was getting kind of cluttered, I decided to extract this code and create a GraphView class:

Moving stuff into this new LinearLayout-derived class was simple. But there was some lifecycle management code associated with creating and destroying timers and event listeners used by this graph (I didn't want this thing polling in the background if the activity was paused, for example). Coming from a MS Windows background, I kind of expected to find overridable onCreate() and onDestroy() methods or something similar, but I haven't found anything of the sort in LinearLayout (or any of its inherited members). Having to leave all of this initialization code in the Activity, and then having to pass it into the view seemed like it defeated the original purpose of encapsulating all of this code into a reusable view. I ended up adding two additional public methods to my view: start() and stop(). I make these calls from the activity's onResume() and onPause() methods respectively. This seems to work, but it feels like I'm using duct tape here. Does anyone know how this is typically done?

Jun 16, 2009I have a custom view that I had to write for a large scrollable image, as the images are larger than the size of the screen. Before, I had tried to do it by putting the image into a ScrollView but that of course didn't work. The view itself is within a RelativeLayout within the activity and at the bottom of the screen I have two buttons that are used for navigation and at the top a TextView with a caption for the activity (the main header is already being used here for instruction). In my below code, I've checked the Hierachy Viewer to confirm all the elements are loaded and in the Activity I can see the TextView, however it overlays the ZN5ScrollView area and below the image I just have a blank area of the size defined rather than my buttons. For the bottom navigation, the Hierachy Viewer is saying the absolute_y of the bottom navigation is 480. I'm wondering if anyone can help with my layout code here to get this working correctly? Bottom navigation is 50px high, ZN5ScrollView is 365px above the navigation, and the TextView takes up the rest of the area at the top

Oct 6, 2010I have a layout xml file with a linear layout. One of the children is again a ViewGroup Relative layout. In my java code i want to change the width of this child Viewgroup for my requirements. I tried this

I couldn't do this because findViewById(childViewGroup) doesn't fetch ViewGroups it does only for Views. Note: I cant define a whole new layout.xml for this minor requirement since it is huge layout file and might cause performance overhead. I wanted to just change the width of the child view group in my java activity code.

Jun 25, 2010Can anyone recommend a good Beginner Android programming book? When I was in college about 20 years ago I used to program a lot (Basic, Pascal, COBOL, Fortran). I dabbled a little bit in VisualBASIC about five years go, but it was really a hack. Now, I really have a burning desire to write some applications for my Android phone, but I really don't know anything about all the new programming technologies (OOP etc). I'm looking for a good book that will teach me modern programming using Java and the Android platform.
I've seen good books on learning Java 6 and some good books on programming Android (but they all seem to assume you know Java or C), but nothing that seems to combine the two. I'd really like to learn Java right on the Android platform to begin with if possible. I know there are a lot of resources available online but unfortunately much of the time that I will spend on this endeavor is when I won't have internet access so a good book would go a long way.

Sep 24, 2010I may be doing some Blue tooth Serial Port programming work for a client and I'm just looking for some tips in determining complexity/ workload. The work is similar to reading from a blue tooth GPS (not making the phone a blue tooth GPS), but it is some custom hardware, so not exact. Here's what (I think) I know so far: I will need to pair devices with a Serial Port Profile. I need to connect using a Bloodsucker which works on Android 2x -I don't know yet if the Android I will be a server or a client in this scenario. I will open an InputStream (no output stream needed) and have a thread continually blocking for input I believe "BluetoothChat" is the best example to start with. What I would want to know. - Are there devices/manufacturers who block the blue tooth serial port, trying to block tethering or something like that? (-I've seen posts here that imply that, but I don't see a bunch of comments like "Doesn't work on my @#$$" in Blue tooth GPS Providers in the market). -Are there going to be hardware specific oddities, or can I develop with my Nexus One and just hope it works on everything else? -Is pairing something that will require a lot of education for the users, and would a good app try to initiate this inside their app, or just assume it is already done. -Is Blue tooth programming going to be my worst nightmare, like it sometimes was on Windows Mobile, or smoother than I could ever hope?
