Android :: Enable GPS Without Forwarding User To "settings"?

I know this question has been asked in similar forms before, but I found no real answer about the following issue: On my Nexus One there's a widget to toggle on/off several things on my phone like wlan, bluetooth, gps, Why does this widget has access to the GPS, without forwarding me to the settings screen? And how can I use this functionality in my own apps? On many sites it is mentioned, this is done because of security reasons...but in a strange way, this widget may do this? why? and the better question is: how? Does someone have a clue?

On the Captivate for AT&T, is there a way to set up call forwarding to my home number BEFORE I travel to another country? When travelling I don't want my phone to ring or else i'd get charged international roaming rates for the voicemail if one is left, so I need any incoming calls to go immediately straight to my home phone without the call reaching the Captivate while i'm abroad. While i'm overseas I use my phone for text messaging, no voice to save money. I do this with my Palm Treo Pro all the time when travelling, set up the network so that the call immediately gets forwarded to my home number.

What number do people have configured for the 'Call forwarding settings' in Menu -> Settings -> Call -> Call forwarding? It takes 10 secs to "read settings" then shows a random number I don't recognise under busy / unanswered and unreachable.

Would it be possible to add a line of code to the Google Hangouts app on Android to receive forwarded Google Voice calls as it does on the iOS app?
There's been apps like Groove IP that are already able to provide this feature. I'd just like to have this functionality without having to install any 3rd party apps that always have to be running in the background. Google Hangouts is already the primary sms app for Android & so it is already able to receive texts, mms, along with video and voice chats. Thus, it should be somewhat possible to receive call forwarding from Google voice.

I'm currently writing an Android app that should be able to communicate in real time with another app hosted in Google's app engine. Since I can't use sockets in GAE, I though maybe using XMPP over GTalk server would solve my problem. But that way the Android app would be connected to the users account and thus showing the user as being online, when in reality the user is not. Any way of achieving this kind of communication without showing the user as being online?

Does anyone know if there is an app which can enable you to change the sound settings on an Android G1? I finally got a headphone adapter yesterday and the sound quality of music was not very good. It might improve things if there were an equaliser or similar available. Does the API even allow that level of control?

ive been doing A LOT of reading these past few days and, along with the phone itself- im learning quite a bit. however, after a few searches, i was unable to find my answer-i use AOL as my email service. when i receive emails with web links in the email, im unable to 'click' the link. is there a way to 'enable' the links in the messages or is user-error?

I thought I had it worked out...But need alittle help. I was receiving RR emails thru GMail on my Droid but now they are not coming thru...I do not have Weatherbug loaded..just got phone 2 days ago so only have Pandora and SportsTap loaded. Here is what I have done so far. I set up my GMail to use my RR email as well. I went to GMail Settings. I added RR as my POP3 email account..."POP Server" set to pop.roadrunner.com and Port set to 110. In the "Accounts and Imports"..."Send mail as" the RR is set to Default. Do I need to change any of the settings in the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" section of GMail Settings?

I am creating an application which connects to the server using username/password and I would like to enable the option "Save password" so the user wouldn't have to type the password each time the application starts. I upgraded to Android 2.1 2 days ago and I've pretty much gotten most things that used to work working again, but I have questions/problems regarding the new functionality, can anyone help me? Blue tooth: I am able to send photos via blue tooth, but I CANNOT send a song, ring tones, etc which I could do with my SE 850i I bought 5 years ago. Perhaps if there was some kind of file manager application where I could see the file, I could send from there. In my opinion, blue tooth was marginally improved, but still is NOT satisfactory. Someone please proove me wrong! GEO tagging Photos: This is a new feature with the upgrade and I was eager to try it. In the GEO tagging widget it says to enable GEO tagging from the camera menu. I spent a fair amount of time, but I CANNOT find a camera menu or anywhere to enable GEO tagging. Please help! User Guide Gone: When you use the User Guide widget it says the files have been removed. I looked on PC Companion and confirm, they were removed. I copied the files from PC companion back into the .emanual folder on my phone where the files used to live, but that did not help.Still unable to see user guide. Did anyone get this working again? SMS-ing unsaved number: This annoying problem still exits after upgrade. As far as I can tell, there is NO WAY to sms someone from the call log for numbers that have not previously been saved. I often want to sms a number in my call log that either called me or I typed in. The only way to do this is to save the number in my contacts first. Am I missing something here?

I have a Galaxy Note 10 2014 and recently updated to Android 4.4.2. I have installed Dash Clock but in order to get it working the instructions say I have to Enable Widgets under Settings - Security. However when I go to Settings - Security I don't see the option to Enable Widgets.I verified Android version in About Device.

Is there any way to permanently enable developer settings in AOSP Cyanogenmod 10.1 so they stick after a reboot? Disabling HW Overlays is necessary on the EVO 4G LTE with 4.2 AOSP roms, so after each reboot it is a bother to have to remember to enable it.

I have the old Nexus 7 with stock 4.4.2, and I want to enable developer settings.
I have found many references to Settings -> About (Tablet) -> And click 7 times on build number - but that simply does not work. I have tried tapping it 1 million times and nothing happens. If I tap "Android Version 4.4.2" in the same menu, I get the whole spinning K, kitkat, easter-egg game etc.
What am I missing? How do I enable developer settings?

I enabled APN in the settings. But, I want to be able to enable/disable my APN so I can be sure that I'm not getting charged for using the Internet when I'm not. On the top of my screen I see an E with 2 arrows, one pointing up and one pointing down, when I turn my WiFi on this disappears and is replaced by a WiFi icon, and I don't get charged for browsing. But I want to be able to turn APN on and off, I can't uncheck the option for APN which I chose, and the application I downloaded does not work. The icon remains there when I'm not connected to a router even if APN is disabled.

I use my phone daily in a non-Verizon network, so having Data Roaming enabled is very important for me. The new ROM I installed, however, does not have a menu option for enabling/disabling Data Roaming.
Any way to do this through script? Or maybe there is something that can be changed in "build.prop" (or another file) that would change the default setting of Data Roaming disabled to be enabled?

I'm trying to write an app that consists of an activity that manages a background service. However, I want to implement a user setting for automatically starting the service up at boot time. I have user settings implemented with SharedPreferences and I have the services starting up at boot by using a BroadcastReceiver and listening for BOOT_COMPLETED. However, I can't figure out a good way to implement a setting so that the service is only started at boot if said setting is enabled. I can think of a few cheap ways to do this (such as messing with onCreate() in the service, or creating/checking for a file on SD card) but I want to follow good practice. There must be a good way to do this because there's tons of apps out there that do it, I just can't find anything online about how to do it.

My app uses a WebView, and users sometimes adjust the zoom level to make the text larger. However the zoom level setting is lost when the Activity is closed and another one started.
I can't see how to get and set the zoom level programatically on WebView, can anyone suggest a way this could be done?

I'm currently (trying) to make a app that simply displays a webpage.. However, I want to be able in the settings for the user to select the URL & port.. But finding it hard to do! Basically, If the user presses the options button all I need is a box with two options..

I'm a big fan of Toggle Settings but my one wish would be that it could toggle GPS. From what I understand, the security of Android doesn't allow any app to turn GPS on/off. My question is, since installing Mobile Defense as a system application allows it to turn my GPS on, would installing Toggle Settings as a system app enable the same feature? Does anybody know of a way around this or another app that is similar and can toggle GPS settings?

i had this set up before i wiped my desire now trying to get it back but when entering my details in (correctly of course), when it tries to connect i get a "couldnt connect to server" error and cant get it set up again also ive read about how people are forwarding emails to gmail to get instant notification, but doesnt that mean if i reply to said email, it will appear as if it came from the gmail address? (or is there a way around that?)

When I forward/reply from gmail on my phone, it doesn't retain the whole email chain. It just cuts the text off somewhere down the line.

I am looking for a way to send certain callers to another number- not my Tmobile voicemail (I'm using an ADP1/Dream) I'm hoping to change jobs soon, and I don't want all the folks that call me at my current job bombarding me with questions at the new one. I want to be able to set up my phone so that pre-selected calls get forwarded to my current office, instead of my Tmobile voicemail. The only option I can find on my phone is to forward a specific caller to my Tmobile voicemail. (This is my personal phone, that I've given my number out to business contacts over the years)
