Android :: Storing Object Into SQLlite Database

Nov 16, 2010

I would like to store an object into a SQLlite database. I am looking for how to best do it in order to ensure that if I need to updata/change this object in the future that users of the new and old object layout will be minimally impacted. In other words I want to ensure that making changes to the object will have minimum affect on clients that do not update their software on the old database format.

I want to also ensure an easy update from the old record style to the new format. I was thinking that I could add an element in the SQL row to identify the object type with a unique name, and to identify the object version number. That way I could read the row and use the object number to control the deserializer to use the correct version of the class.

Android :: Database Connection Java File - Check Data - Login Page

Jul 8, 2010

I'm doing Major Project on my final year and I'm very new to Android plus I;m not good at codings. I need help with my login page.

I've created something like a database connection java file which is this:

CODE:.......

I've already created a database for users using SQLite. The database name is Users and the table is called User. The records inside the table are Username, Password, LastName, FirstName. I've inserted one user's info into the database. The problem is I do not know whether my UserDB.java is correct.

And I've also created login.java. Hardcoded Login page:

CODE:.........

So I want to know how I should apply the database connection on the login.java. Should I insert database connection something like db.Open();? I studied ASP.Net a few months back and I kind of forget most of what I've learnt. So how should I open the database connection on login.java and how to check with database whether the user enters the right username and password?

mDbHelper.open();
fillData();

Android : ContentProvider Storage/memory - Data Can Be Stored In File System - In An SQLite Database

Oct 20, 2010

Please direct me to a description of the techniques that the ContentProvider employs to access data. I am trying to understand how it works as well as what is tunable or even if its meant to be tunable. It the memory management tiered, cached, virtual, flat? Is it file based, shmem based, stream based? Can there be a combination thereof?

Any information, suggestions, or references are welcome. The android fundamentals page says: "The data can be stored in the file system, in an SQLite database, or in any other manner that makes sense;" but the android ContenProvider page barely skins the onion.

Android : Can SAX Use A Local Resource XML File?

Jul 26, 2010

All of the android examples for XmlPullParser pull from a local resource file, and all of the SAX examples pull the XML from a URL. I've been told SAX is faster, so I'm trying to use that to pull data from a local resource file (res/xml/thefile.xml)

The example code I'm working off of is here. So in that example, the code I want to change is:

URL url = new URL("http://example.com/example.xml");
...
xr.parse(new InputSource(url.openStream()));

Instead of using URL, I want to use getXml(R.xml.thefile)
Is that possible, or does SAX need to get data from a URL?

Android :: Open A Local App File In Another App Via An Intent

Nov 8, 2010

I don't want to store said file on the sdcard in this case. The file also cannot be storage directly in the apps local files directory. It needs to be in a subdirectory, so it cannot write the file using openFileOutput() and MODE_WORLD_READABLE.

The app may download files small files like pdfs and store them locally in a subdirectory. I would like to be able to have the user open these files if they have an app that can open them.

For example here is an intent for sending a pdf:

CODE:..............

path being something like: /data/data/packagename/files/subdir/example.pdf

That intent will open a pdf viewer, but the viewer is unable to open the file. I assume this is a permissions issue. I tried Mark Murphy's suggestion here: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/4e55d869213483a9/b7270078ac1a2744?lnk=raot of using Runtime.getRuntime().exec("chmod 755 " + fileName); but it didn't make any difference. He also suggested a Content Provider but I would like to avoid it if I can because it seems like a lot just to get this file over to another app.

If the content provider is the only option, do I have to save the file to the content provider or can I just use the content provider as a pass through to get it to the other app when I need to?
