Android :: Confusion With Activity Stack And Restoring State / Whats Wrong?

Jan 11, 2010

I have a start activity page for my game (which is the root activity for my app) that just lists "Play", "Help", and "About" TextViews on the screen. Each TextView has a click listener which start the appropriate Activity for each. The GameActivity (started with explicit intent from clicking "Play") has onSaveInstanceState implemented to save state of the game. Its onCreate checks for non- null Bundle to restore this state. My problem is this:

1. Turn on Phone/Emulator 2. start my game with icon in launcher 3. Start page is displayed 4. click "Play" to start my GameActivity 5. play game for a few seconds 6. click home 7. state is saved (proven with debugger calling onSaveInstanceState) 8. start my game with the icon in launcher 9. start page is displayed

I was under the impression that by clicking the app icon from the launcher that my existing task activity stack would be restored with my GameActivity being on top and its onCreate being called for me to restore the state I saved. Instead I am getting a brand new instance of my start page. Also, if I long press home and choose my running game icon, then my game comes back exactly as I left it. However, this apparently is NOT using my onCreate restore state logic as onCreate is never called.

All of the documentation seems to say that the entire stack of activities will be restored when clicking the application icon from the launcher, but I just get a fresh instance. What might I be doing wrong?

Android :: Activity History Stack Wrong Upon First Install On Device

Dec 4, 2009

Edit / Update:

As an update to the below problem, I found the exact action which causes it to happen.

Download an apk from a url through the android browser
Install the app.
After install, the app gives you two choices: "Open" or "Done".
If you choose "Open", the quirky behavior described below starts.
If you choose "Done", then launch the app from the app tray, it works fine.

So it seems like this problem is caused by using the "Open" button the browser provides you after installing the APK.

I'm experiencing an error in the history stack of applications upon first install. I made a test app to demonstrate this.

The test app is simply two activities, A and B. Activity A launches B. That's all it does. Rest is wizard generated template code from eclipse.

When the user installs the app (via web url apk), and runs it for the first time, I get an out-of-order activity stack:

-User starts the app, A is on top.
-They make A launch B by clicking a button. B is on top of the stack.
-User hits the home screen button.
-User returns to the app, A is displayed, instead of B.
-User hits the back key, B is shown!
-User hits the back key again, A is shown!
-User hits the back key again, home screen shown.
-Now the stack is clean, and app behaves "normally" from now on!

Is any one else seeing this? This is almost exactly like this known bug, however my users are not installing from eclipse:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2373&q=first%20%20i...

I can provide the test app/source if anyone wants to try. This is the manifest, which does not have any special customizations made to it. code...

as far as I know, this should definitely not be happening, and works fine after you clear the history stack the first time.

Android :: Activity - Sometimes - Throws Wrong State Class Exception When Being Resumed After Kill

Nov 24, 2009

I'm testing how my app behaves when killed by the OS due to low memory conditions. I always have three activities on the stack, like: A B C (then C launches maps or some other heavy process)

when my app is killed, and I return to it, C starts itself up again ok. When I hit the back button to go to B, I [sometimes] get an exception thrown which I can't trace. Output is below. I don't know where to go from here. I've only seen one other post mentioning this exception, but it was related to a reproducable error when rotating the device. This only happens sometimes.

Android :: Saving And Restoring State?

Jul 15, 2010

I have searched through this and a few other sites for the answer, but I have been unable to find it. I am trying to save a boolean and an int using onSaveInstanceState and onRestoreInstanceState, but I can't seem to get it to work. It doesn't crash or anything, but it either isn't saving it or it isn't restoring it, or I am stupid and have no idea what I am doing.

Here is what I have for my activity, do I need to have it in my onCreate somewhere or something?

CODE:..............

I tried putting stuff in the onStop, but it crashes, which is why its empty, in case that matters, thanks in advance

Android :: CheckBox -- Restoring State After Screen Rotation

Mar 24, 2010

I have come across some very unexpected (and incredibly frustrating) functionality while trying to restore the state of a list of CheckBoxes after a screen rotation. I figured I first would try to give a textual explanation without the code, in case someone is able to determine a solution without all the gory details. If anyone needs more details I can post the code.

I have a scrolling list of complex Views that contain CheckBoxes. I have been unsuccessful in restoring the state of these check boxes after a screen rotation. I have implemented onSaveInstanceState and have successfully transfered the list of selected check boxes to the onCreate method. This is handled by passing a long[] of database ids to the Bundle.

In onCreate() I check the Bundle for the array of ids. If the array is there I use it to determine which check boxes to check when the list is being built. I have created a number of test methods and have confirmed that the check boxes are being set correctly, based on the id array. As a last check I am checking the states of all check boxes at the very end of onCreate(). Everything looks good... unless I rotate the screen.

When I rotate the screen, one of two things happens: 1) If any number of the check boxes are selected, except for the last one, all check boxes are off after a rotation. 2) If the last check box is checked before rotation, then all check boxes are checked after rotation.

Like I said, I check the state of the boxes at the very end of my onCreate(). The thing is, the state of the boxes at the end of onCreate is correct based on what I selected before the rotation. However, the state of the boxes on the screen does not reflect this.

In addition, I have implemented each check box's setOnCheckChangedListener() and I have confirmed that my check boxes' state's are being altered after my onCreate method returns.

Why would the state of my check boxes change after my onCreate method returns?

I have been trying to degub this for a couple days now. After I found that my check boxes were apparently changing somewhere outside my own code I figured it was time to ask around.

So my scenario is A -> B -> C and then when a user goes to Activity D, activies A,B,C should be cleared from the activity stack. FLAG_ACTIVITY _CLEAR_TOP seems to only clear any activites above an existing activity. Anybody run into this scenario and found a solution?

Android :: Strange Activity Stack Behavior When Using Map Activity

Apr 23, 2010

I have the following activity structure in my application A simple "splash screen" activity is started when the application is fired up (let's call it "Splash"). This activity starts the main activity when the user presses a button (I will call it "Main"). Main can in turn start two activities from the menu. The first activity presents a simple form (let's call this one "Form"), the second is a MapActivity that presents a map (it is called "Map").
Main, Form, and Map are declared exactly the same in the manifest:
<activity android:name="fully qualified activity class"
android:screenOrientation="landscape"
android:configChanges="keyboard|keyboardHidden|orientation"
> <intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.DEFAULT" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
</intent-filter> </activity> When Main is active and I start Form and press "back", Main comes up again. Pressing "back" again brings up "Splash". Nothing strange here.Now comes the strange part: when I am in Main, start Map, and press "back", Main comes up as expected. But pressing "back" again just restarts Main. A second press on "back" is needed to bring me back to Splash!So it seems that starting the Map activity somehow results in Main ending up on the activity stack twice while starting the Form activity does not! Both Form and Map are started like this: start Activity(new Intent(this, MyActivity.class)); I don not catch the back key in any activity.Any clues on what is going on or how to debug this?

Android :: Clear Activity Stack?

Nov 3, 2009

Is there a way to clear our Activity stack? For example, a user in my app progresses through these activities, one is launched from the previous activity: ActivityA -> ActivityB -> ActivityC if the user is now looking at ActivityC, and they hit the back button, they will go back to ActivityB. Is it possible to add a menu to ActivityC where the user can clear their activity stack, and then launch a new instance of ActivityA? This would be so the user can jump to a particular activity in my application without getting confused with the back button + history,

If the latter, is there a workaround for this until the bug is fixed?

Android :: Resetting Activity Stack

Sep 22, 2009

Activities: A & B are activities that once you have navigated away from them it's not logical that you can get back to them using the back button. C X are activities that follow the usual "can go back to where you came from" flow.App flow: * Launch app from Home -> starts A * From A start B * Finish A (removes it from stack) * From B start C * Finish B (removes it from stack) * From C start D * From D start E.Once the user has reached E, the activity stack looks like this: C -> D -> E. Can I somehow reset the whole stack so it starts again at A so it's as the user just launched it from Home (so that C... E are removed from the history stack)?

Android :: Not Understanding Activity Stack?

Dec 3, 2009

I'm having trouble with my activities when they go in the background. I have two activities, A and B. Only A can launch B (manifest copied below).This is very confusing. It's like Android knows my app is running, and puts a new instance of A on top of the old B instance running. I'd just expect that the application gets paused in-place, and whenever the user hits the app icon again, it just picks up where it left off (in this case, just show B again!) Below is the manifest, and the activity classes for this test are completely empty (except A which has a button to launch B).

Android :: How To Reuse Activity On Top Of Stack

Jun 16, 2010

My app has a single entry activity called "Main". In "Main" I call one of three other activities A, B, or C (based on a preference) and then immediately exit/finish"Main" so that only A, B, or C are active.I also have a permanent notification in the notification bar that users can pull down (at any time) to conveniently restart my App (calls intent with "Main" component).The problem is that if my app is already running and users pull down the notification and restart, I get A or B or C running on top of the previous activity (also A, or B, or C). How can I avoid this (i.e. reuse the activity on top of the stack)?I've tried Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_* and nothing seems to work. I've tried launchModel in the Manifest and it also didn't seem to work.
