Android : Confirmed Use External Keyboards
May 3, 2010
I was hoping to start a thread to ask users about bluetooth keyboards that they've confirmed to use with their Android phone --- Particularly, I can't find any info regarding the DROID Eris --- But it'd be nice to see what options are around in general. Is anyone successfully using a bluetooth (or USB?!) keyboard with their phone?Impressions?

I just got off the phone with Tmobile since my visual voicemail wasnt setup, and took the time to ask if they have any word on an update to their android line up. He said he just received an email today from up top that yes Tmobile is working with Google to provide an update to the Cliq, Behold II, and myTouch(Not sure if I heard G1 or not).So the fact that the reps have gotten word of it makes me feel alot better about this. And his understanding was the Cliq would be first but the rest to follow not long after that.

Been searching around the web and there seems to be a Consensus about Unlimited data lately... Android Police.com is reporting that they have confirmed that the $10xtra will offer unlimited 3G and 4G.... no just 4G as some may previously reported Those Extra 10 Bucks/Month For HTC EVO 4G Dont Just Get You All-You-Can-Eat 4G But 3G Too | Android News, Reviews, Applications, Games, Phones, Devices, Tips, Hacks, Videos, Podcasts - Android Police. they pinged a sprint rep and got this response on twitter Twitter / svinge: @AndroidPolice You are cor .. Also PhoneScoop is reporting the same Sprint's WiMax Plans Have No Data Cap (Phone Scoop)I wonder what the implications would be for the HotSpot feature?... If I can get Unlimited tethering and not have to worry about that 5GB LIKE I DO NOW WITH AT&T! . . . then the $30 wouldn't be bad at all

We'll finally had the chance to test my GPS while driving. Hers what I did
- clicked applications
- hit maps
- left start point alone (Anaheim)
- end point: Bakersfield, ca
- hit go
- hit navigate
navigation was on point from start to finish except through the grapevine area (mountains). When it did pick back up it took about 30-45 seconds cause I on some signal other than 3G, E or wifi. Looks as if it was only a G. Anyway....got home turned it off and started reverse directions. Gave me directions and found my location with 7 seconds. So maybe it's not all GPS's. Or maybe I got lucky cause every time I used google maps at Disneyland it found my location fast.

Samsung Fascinate poses with DROID X Boy Genius Report. See the first slide confirming 332556 kb Total memory, compared to 487780 kb for the DX. I will be looking closely at the pre-release reviews to see whether reviewers notice that it makes any difference in real-world use. Also, what effect it will have on future upgrades, esp. running Flash and 3.0 further down the road?

Just wanted to let folks know I put my Incredible under an inspection scope today and confirmed the PenTile matrix layout is present on the AMOLED screen, similar to the Nexus One. Not a big surprise since it's probably the same stock screen acquired from Samsung, but I thought I'd let everyone know for certain. If you're not familiar with the PenTile matrix arrangement:I'll try to get some real high mag pictures, but it's basically as shown in the first link.Picture of the Incredible's AMOLED screen under high mag.

I just came from my local Best Buy where I tried to social-engineer myself a Droid. I brought the Best Buy sku 9553501 and Motorola number A855 with me. The VERY helpful employee looked up the sku and it came up "Not avail at location". He realized it was the Droid and verified his belief by pulling out some accessories (Droid protective cover) marked A855. He told me that this Best Buy wasn't scheduled to have the Droid yet, and proceeded to tell me all about his hacked and rooted phone, how he ran Hero on some WinMo device. He told me that "IF" that Best Buy was going to be able to sell the phone, it won't be until November 9th. He also mentioned that Best Buy is having a training with Verizon on November 2nd. Next attempt will be at the Verizon business store.

I finally got the answer to what the D icon is by verizon techs which stand for Digital signal in regards to calling not data. This should be on in most cases right? meaning that if your not seeing this D then your using an analog signal which could contribute to the poor call quality for some. When I first got the Fascinate this D showed up every ones in a while but then did the *228 option 2 then I got this constant D which lead me to this quest to find out what it was. Now the question is does every one get this icon in a consistent bases?

The race is on. Which first-generation Android phone will receive an upgrade to Android 2.1 first?
Many thought Sprint would lead off (with all the noise they made), but they have yet to produce. T-Mobile remains fairly quiet, but they could jump ahead to Android 2.2 since Google is in charge of the software for some of their phones.
Today we learn that Verizon has posted the details for the upcoming Android 2.1 upgrade of the Droid Eris. Customers will receive the update over the air (OTA), which is good so customers don't have to take their phone in to Verizon. Other carriers like Sprint will be release their upgrades over the wire.
Like we predicted, it appears the Android 2.1 upgrade will wipe the internal memory of the phone. Verizon warns customers that they will need to reinstall some applications, their contacts will be erased (don't worry, they are all synced in the clouds), and some phone settings will return to defaults.
The update is mandatory, so customers should start looking at apps to backup their apps (or just re download them from the Market).
No information was proved on when the OTA update would be available, so it could drop at any time. When Verizon released the information for the Droid 2.1 upgrade, it still took several weeks before they finally pushed it out (but they did have delays).
How do you feel about a software upgrade wiping your phone? I don't think it is that big a deal and it will benefit most customers by greatly speeding up their phone. However, I can also understand how many unknowing customers might accidentally delete some piece of data.
"You will need to reinstall applications."Details of Droid Eris 2.1 upgrade are listed below.Enhancements:Pinch-to-zoom is now available when using the Gallery and Google Maps.
New support for voice-to-text entry.
Whenever a text-entry box appears, simply tap the microphone icon on the virtual keyboard and speak.
New Gallery application with 3D layout. View and share photos taken with your phone and images from your online Picasa Web albums.
New Leap thumbnail view lets you pinch to jump between the seven panels on your home screen.
Additional calendar views and easier access to contacts make navigating even quicker.
Google Maps with Navigation provides free, traffic-enhanced, turn-by-turn navigation.
With the Enhanced Android Market, you'll enjoy a better browsing experience as well as even more applications, including Verizon Wireless content featuring self-service applications.
Ability to log onto and access multiple Google accounts at once.
Support for 19 Microsoft Exchange Server policies makes your phone more secure and business friendly.
Desk Clock intelligently dims your screen and displays the current time while charging.
Location-based cinematic full screen weather keeps you on top of changing conditions.
Improvements:
Free Yahoo! Mail is now supported—simply sign in with your Yahoo! email address and password.
Longer battery life due to power savings.
Improved You Tube video playback.
Better Blue tooth support, including contact transfer.
Automatic settings for POP3 verizon.net email accounts.
Added support for stand-alone Wi-Fi when device is in airplane mode.
Improved handset audio when disconnecting a wired headset.
Faster power-up time.
Improved swipe-unlock functionality.

I was actually wondering if the Dev version of the G1 would ever be available with different keyboard layouts...
I'm getting old and my brain isn't flexible enough to switch between keyboard layouts anymore... errr... ok, let's say that the low-to-zero availability of the G1 elsewhere on the planet would make a localized version more than appealing... not only for AZERTY-addicted people like me, but more for the day to day usage beyond the dev tool it is.
I know the G1 is coming out in a few days here (at a big price tag), meaning the keypads and hardware exist, but hyper locked, (sim and bootloader), as a futur dev, and continuous geek, I'd love getting an officially "FRogalized" Dev G1 :-)
Would choosing the kb layout ever be possible in the Android Market checkout?

I continue to search for the optimum virtual keyboard (I have a Droid).
I've used:
Default Keyboard - Not bad but far too basic lacking even some of the simplest features.
Better Keyboard - A good effort but I hate it's secondary key feature. Instead of a brief hold it's a brief hold AND a select.
HTC Touch Keyboard - Very good keyboard but not for the Droid. Low resolution, doesn't size right and lacks any AI to deal with situations like making "dont" show up as "don't".
Swype/Shapewriter - Both were interesting for about a week and then the novelty wore off.

Is there an App that switches keyboards depending on the program in use? I know i can just long press and change it, but i was wondering if there was something out there, that could do this automatically. For some reason with swype when i send emails they either wont send or take hours to send. But swype works fine for text and other functions.

Im just curious about this. Ive been around the Incredible forums a lot and hear sometimes about the newer VZN keyboard smartphone coming out in the future. I was pretty stoked about this new big HTC phone but realized it had a keyboard and I immediately got turned off. I dunno about you guys but I NEVER got into the physical keyboards and really prefer the touch version 10 fold.

Was wondering if it were possible to have it set so that Swype would be the default keyboard for portrait & whenever you switched to landscape, the default Android keyboard would pop up as the default?
I did read this post here & was wondering if the info still stands. Figured I'd start a thread here since my question's not Incredible-specific.

Is it safe to use 3rd party Keyboards, (such as Big Buttons etc)? I only ask as i installed a keyboard app, went to enable it but it came up with information saying it collects credit card data and password data.. Wasn't comfortable with this so cancelled enabling it and uninstalled.. I need a keyboard as the one on my phone is pretty good but a bit too small. Can anyone shed a little light on this and recommend me a Big keyboard for the Pulse mini
