Android :: Class Action By Android Users Over Apple Forced Programmer Exclusivity?
Jul 3, 2010
Happy Fourth of July weekend to all the US folks here. Now, before I go on I just want to say I am not sue happy nor am I looking to make a bunch of lawyers a bunch of money.I am wondering if anyone has heard of any class action by Android users against Apple for its Programmer exclusivity policy. I am referring to the agreement that requires programmers only to write an app for Apple using Apple tools. I am not an apple hater. The reason I ask is that I have noticed there are quite a few event specific apps that are only available to the iPhone that just dropped (don't judge but the one I really wanted was the official Tour de France app as it started today)I feel that is safe to assume that the Official Android app is not yet available because of the aforementioned agreement that I believe most on here are aware of.ie: hurdles of not being allowed to cross platform develop forces developer to choose one store over the other. I know the FTC has started some investigating of Apple's policy for anti trust violations. I am just wondering if Android users as a consumer group can be proactive through litigation (sounds like such a dirty word *sigh*) to help end that policy.
I do not need my nice Evo 4g to be an iPhone. I like no dropped calls the ability to customize my pocket computer/phone as I see fit, but I am bothered knowing that when a new app is released that I want there is no way to get it because the developer has been FORCED to agree not to make it. (By only being allowed to use Apple supplied programmer tools).I understand the developer can make the app for Android using other tools, but for time sensitive events like sporting events most will not have the time or willingness to put out the capital to make both. Please do not turn this into another Apple sucks thread. I am just interested in exploring the legal option of Android users arguing they are negatively impacted by Apple's exclusivity policy.

There is a Law Office that is revving up a class action law suit against Samsung for the GPS issues. It may not ever get up and going but hopefully it will get Samsung in gear to push out an update.Samsung Mobile Phone GPS Defect ComplaintsLieffCabraser.com

Samsung T959 for T-Mobile in the works? | T Mobile News & Phone Reviews From Cell Phone Signal.Can't imagine Samsung is going to put any time into developing for the Behold 2 when its replacement is right around the corner. My guess is a Memoir 2 running Android. Plus there is no way TMO will cannibalize sales of their first 2.1 phone (~$239) for a similar model selling for ~$50 (what the price is rumored to be for the Behold 2 when the the Cliq XT is released.

Why don't we start a class action lawsuit for Eris owners? Here are some of the issues that I see all over the internet:
1) Verizon admits the problems to some, denies it to others.
2) HTC admits problems, but blames Verizon. Verizon admits it, but blames HTC.
3) Both parties blame either hardware or software, depending on who you talk to.
4) Customers keep getting sent refurbs with same issues, while few get phones without issues.
5) Some customers get to switch phones, some aren't given that opportunity. Some get to switch for free, others are told they have to purchase refurbs for $289. Some have even been allowed to have the Incredible, most have not.
6) Some customers even get new contracts.
There is no consistency with Customer Service, either in store or on the phone. I spoke with a rep 3 weeks that fully admitted Verizon knows this phone is a pile, and offered a replacement if the june 29th update didn't fix the issues. Well it didn't fix them and the guy today denies that there are any well known problems, that mine is an isolated issue and most customers love the Eris. He is sending Eris refurb number 2, the 3rd in total. Told me I could do that or buy a Droid refurb for $289. Didn't care at all if I chose to leave Verizon. There is clearly a problem with the Eris, everybody involved knows it. If enough of us band together, perhaps we can get a consistent, equitable resolution from Verizon. Who is up for starting a list of names?

We are organizing a class action law suite for the failure of the Youtube app service and HTC/Verizon/Google doing nothing about it. Everyone paid for this app and function and this service interruption which is estimated to last for MONTHS will not go unpunished.This is currenlty affecting Eris users and maybe Sprint Hero users as well.

I thought that Action was preeminent during intent resolution and if the intent had the same action as the intent filter, it would be considered a match regardless of data, if the filter did not specify anything. So I was very surprised to find that supplying action+data where filter had only action, causes it to fail. In the code below, if you comment out line 47 so that data is *not* sent, only then it resolves correctly. To get it to work with the data (an id that is simply a String), what mime type should I specify in the intent filter?

create or has in the past created an app for android. I have a very good idea, that ide like to put to work, and cannot do it because I dont know how. Also dont know if this is the right section really. If this works, or can work, it might revolutionize, lets say, Blackberry to Android and vice versa, messaging.

I would like to write a graphical application for an Android phone that displays a level bar, which changes depending on the phone's accelerometer sensor.Where would be the best place to get started in learning about writing programs for the Android? Specifically, I would need to know:
What programming language should I use?
What graphical toolkit would be quick for a new programmer to use?
Where should I look to find information about receiving accelerometer data?
What starter books on Android development would you recommend?

I'm a beginner in programming. My experience so far is only in Actionscript 2 and 3. So I have a basic understanding of declaring variables, loops, arrays, if/then, do/while... I'm wanting to move to developing for Android phones so I'm wondering what suggestions people have for where to go next. Should I jump right to Android? Start with a 'beginning Java' approach? Or should I go some other route to beef up my knowledge of OOP concepts before launching into Android? I have my Dev environment set up and completed the Hello Android tutorial and I'm just wondering if I am going to be in over my head quickly?

I have one year of experience in programming. After getting laid off in cuts I managed to get a job in telecommunications planning. I'm good at my new job and don't want to leave it but I miss programming. I'd like to be able to code in my free time (which is about 4 hours every evening 7 days a week.)
I can code pretty well in C#, reasonably well in SQL and poorly in a unix shell.
What sort of job should I get on the side? Would anyone hire me as a free lancer? Should I focus on making apps for phones (android) instead?

I'm just getting into Android development, and I have a question about communicating between a receiver class and an activity class. I'm very new to JAVA and Android so I hope I don't sound too stupid. I'm developing an application where I intercept an SMS message and then based on various elements of that SMS I might delete it once it's been saved to the inbox. I have a receiver class that intercepts the txt message, and I am also able to delete messages from my inbox with code in the activity class using a button at the moment. The problem I have is communicating between the receiver class and the activity class where the code to delete a message resides. I tried putting that code directly into the receiver class but as I'm sure most of you already know the BroadcastReceiver class doesn't seem to support what I need to delete messages. I've been searching for an answer to this for a while, but haven't been able to find anything. Honestly I'm not sure I know enough about JAVA and Android to even recognize a solution if I saw it.

I'm new to Java and android development. In my application I need data which is accessible for a few activities. I've read that a good solution is to use Application class for this. So I use it like this:
public class MyApplication extends Application {
private String str;
public String getStr(){
return str;
}
public void setStr(String s){
str = s;
}
}
and I can access this variable from activity like this:........................................

Work pays for my phone and we are switching from Sprint to At&T. I just bought a Samsung Moment at the end of last year. I'm not real hip on getting an iPhone. It looks like I'm down to 2 choices: Nexus One and Motorola Backflip.So can you help me out here on pros and cons or what would work better for me? I don't know very much, or anything at all, about cell phones.

I'm building a small Android application, but this is more of a Java question than an android question. Looking through the tutorials there are lines that look like: startService(new Intent(this, MyService.class));
What exactly does the "MyService.class" field represent? Is that just a reference to the class for a template?

I try to force the locale in my app to one the user specified. As this may be used to demonstrations, I want to change the language/locale in the app and not anytime for the whole device.
I looked around SO and tried to use every hint I found here. The result: I can restart my test activity with the new language, but if I change the orientation, the locale will always be reseted to the device one.
I uploaded a minimalistic project so you can reproduce my issue. Please ignore the shrinking of the UI, its not important :)

I have a list, and I want 'Next' and 'Previous' buttons at the bottom of the list. I've tried to make the ListAdapter for the list something other than simple_list_item_1, but Android won't let me. I keep getting '... can't be resolved'.
Now, simple_list_item_1 is some kind of magical unicorn that is impossible to find, so I can't change it.
How can I put my buttons on the screen?

Apple Airplay seems quite impressive and it is possible that it might gain some momentum. As an owner of both Android and Apple products I'm thinking that it would have been great if it was possible for Android devices to support the protocol to send/receive audio/video either trough the OS or an application. I suspect that there might be both legal and technical obstructions. What do you think - Will there be AirPlay support for Android?
